The Arena by ZenriS

[raw]
made by ZenriS for LD 42 (COMPO)

The Arena is a first person shooter where you have to survive longer than your opponent. To win you have to make your opponent fall of their platform and into the abyss. The only way to do this is to remove parts of the platform by shooting at it. Only a red bullet can destroy the ground, a bullet have to bounce once to become red. But be careful your opponent will shoot back.

You also have to keep moving, if you stand still the ground under you will be removed. There is a forcefield between you and your opponent to keep you from jumping over, don’t worry your bullets will pass right thru.

Your gun can only have three active bullets at a time, so try not to be to trigger happy.

The game has three difficulties that affect how many opponents you will have to face.

As always with my Ludum Dare games there are a few bugs and didn't get time to do everything I wanted, but I had fun and learned a lot. Hope you have fun playing!

Great idea! This would be loads of fun as a 2-player game. Controls were a tad fast for my liking, but other than that, I loved it!

@conorod Yea I thought about trying 2 player, but that's over my skill level hehe.

Great fun! I like the bullets bouncing off the walls and the AI is pretty good too.

The core concept of your game is really unique and fresh.
However, apart from the controls being a bit imprecise, I didn't like that you are unable to influence when you're going to fall down. You always concentrate on shooting some wall and don't even have time to stop and look at the floor below you. I think, this issue wouldn't be present if the game had a 3rd person camera. The ammo display was not very helpful and rather vague.
Different difficulty levels were a great idea.

@psjuk0 Thanks, I used a lot of time to get the AI movement to work well. I wanted to add jumping over the gaps for AI, but didn't have time to implement it.
@gurkenlabs Thanks, I didn't even think about third person, but I think what might be a good idea. I might try that when I get time. Thanks for the suggestion.

I like the twist you added on the typical spleef gameplay. The visuals were nicely done. The music got a little repetitive though. It was hard to avoid holes in your own play area but I'm not sure that's a problem. Overall, great job and congrats for finishing!

Fun concept and very fitting sounds/music. If you wanted to make this into a full game, I think the first step would be to allow more precision and oversight for the player. Third person camera, clearer ground outlines and more complex level geometry, so that there is a way to actually aim your shots properly. I felt that the only viable tactic was "spray and pray".

Very nice idea! But movement is so imprecise and you can't see where are gaps :<

the idea was interesting but i found difficult to aim so it was more like randomly shooting the ceiling hoping to touch a tile close to an enemy i also think that the tile on the ground where to small so i often was thinking that i was safe while the tile was actually blinking. watching your feet while checking bounce in the air is difficult. the shooting feel good and the mood is cool too.

I absolutely love the music! The game itself is a bit hard to play thanks to very fast mouse speed and also because it's hard to see tiles gone behind you, but an interesting idea regardless

Nice game, I liked the connection with the theme. Found it a bit hard to orientate though, maybe the fields on the ground could be bigger or give a warning sound / light to know, when they disapear. Or maybe a minimap, to see, where the holes are. But nice work!

the game itself has a neat concept, but also 2 huge mistakes: the mouse sensitivity is WAY too extreme and it's 1st person. if it would be 3rd person, the aiming would probably be a bit weird, but you could see where the enemies are shooting at.
but besides that, this game is pretty good. the soundtrack is short, but it does the job, the approach on difficulty is interesting, since you don't only have to battle more enemies, but you can also use less bullet and, as i said, the concept is good.

Out of about 25 games on Easy difficulty I won exactly 0 matches. I think I should have won at least one game just by chance? ;) A cool concept and a really good fit for the theme! Frustratingly hard but still enjoyable. Good job!

The AI is too hard: it's very smart (regarding it can't fall by walking of the platforms and it's constantly moving so it can survive on a 1 by 1) and that's ok -even with this really hard to kill-, but it cheats too, the guy escaped 3 times from a 1 by 1 platform and I didn't saw him jump, they can teleport! That's not cool. I want fair fight!

And after 30 attempts or so I finally got rid of the enemy on the "easy" level and... Nothing. No congratulations, no medal, not even a sign that the game realized I won. The game just continued, I was jumping and walking around like "Hey I won, hey! Game pls. At least a back to main manu button or something." No. I had to commit suicide and loose even tho I won. Is your game so hard you didn't make a victory srceen for it?

Otherwise it's a great concept, the multiplayer mode would be super fun, and it made me afraid to sit still in my chair after I finished playing it so it set a really intense mood as well. I enjoyed playing it after all.

But I still hate your AI.

@balka When you win there is suppose to be a win screen with button to main menu etc. Don't know why it didn't trigger for you. Am very new to Unity's navmesh system, I had no idea it would force a teleport if the AI was stuck on on tile. Am glade you still enjoyed the game and thanks for the feedback
