Towers of Power by terryg

LATEST VERSION (INCLUDES TUTORIAL): http://ludum.daretogame.net/top/

Your fortress is under attack (again). The ongoing energy crisis has led your tiny neighbors to extreme measures (as usual). You've turned off the lights to save on battery, but it's still not enough (par for the course). Desperate times call for that newfangled energy source: WIND.

Now if only wind would gust on cue.

Harness and redirect wind to shoot down those power-hungry grubs in all five levels of this tower defense game.

All code, art, and music created during the game jam!

INSTRUCTIONS:

To build a tower, press 'S' and click in a valid building space on the screen. (The tower will appear red if it is not a valid building space.) Building costs 100 power. To cancel building, press SPACE.

Towers have two modes:

Autofire: Tower expends energy to automatically shoot enemies.

Direct: Tower expends less energy to shoot wind instead. Wind can travel anywhere on the map, but it does not damage enemies. A tower in this mode does not shoot enemies. It just redirects wind to other towers.

To change a tower's firing mode, click on the tower. Then, press 'A' to change the mode to Autofire. Or, press 'D' and a wind icon will appear under the mouse. Click anywhere on the map and the tower will redirect the wind to wherever you clicked.

The fortress does not have a windmill, so it cannot collect wind directly. However, any tower with full power becomes SUPERCHARGED and sends extra power back to your fortress. Manage your power carefully and take advantage of the time between waves.

Good luck!

Cool game! I didn't realize you also need to send wind to the castle.

The music is so great. This is really fun and playful, I could see spending a lot of time on this one! Nice job.

Cool idea, maybe a bit too complex for the description given.

Neato! It was a challenge to have to direct power to the windmills as well as fight off the grunts!

Not enough explanation of the mechanics, either in-game or on this page, so I couldn't get past level 2. Which is a pity because a lot of work has obviously gone into it and it seems like fun.

Hi @winterslice, i will write something up and post it. The wind redirect mechanic needs a better explanation.

That was fun! Loved the menu! Takes a while to understand the mechanics though!

as many have commented, confusing mechanics, the towers visual feedback when they shoot felt lacking as well

Oh! Music! Cool.

That idea of harvesting efficiently an imposed power source is very interesting.

Would have liked some shooting animation for the towers.

Nice entry, however for me it was little bit difficult to get into mechanics, but overall experience is great :) .
Music, audio are great, kudos for HTML5 version. And this game is innovative :) .

Thanks @oparisy and @xqwzts251. Great feedback. The cannon balls are animated, they just move too fast. And I need to have a better indication that the tower has changed from an automatic fire to a redirect. Also I think one of the very early levels (like level 2) needs to be a tutorial on how to use the redirect. It is a complicated mechanic. The whole time we were coming up with it, we were like, "wow how are we going to have the gamer learn this?", and our answer was to come up with a nice level that walked you through it...and then we ran out of time. Probably should have made fewer levels and took the time to explain the mechanic. Thanks again, I'm going to try and push a new version soon and leave a link in the game description.

Pretty clever take on the running out of power theme! I'll never look at windmills the same way again. :)

Interesting concept, and atmospheric music, but it's too hard to understand how to control and play :\

Very big company of developers. Game is good. It's a clever TD game. I really like it. But not everybody can understand game mechanics by first playing. Your game can be better, if you make simple tutorial for it. Music is so epic!)

Thanks for the feed back @sumgamstudio. I ended up making some improvements including a tutorial level: http://ludum.daretogame.net/top/
