Theresa Dreams of Wheat by essell

[raw]
made by essell for LD 39 (JAM)

ludumdare image.jpg

A short, silly first-person narrative thing by Steve Lee (@essell2) for #LDJAM 39! The theme was "Running Out of Power" and I was very wary of doing something that lots of other people would too. So now you have a weird thing about Theresa May, her dwindling political power, and her attempt to flee from office and escape to the wheat fields with a frying pan.

Recently updated to v1.2 with bug fixes and a bit more polish, but the zip file you download contains a zip of the original release, for fair rating purposes.

Thanks for taking a look <3

Would have loved to rate this but unfortunately it doesn't run too smoothly on my laptop, so I'l wait until I've tried it on another computer to give this a rating. Already seems quite entertaining though!

I was kind of really sad that I couldn't talk to people anymore once you pick up the frying pan ;-;

Really funny game, those professional newspapers are the best.

Dear @storm-force02: you can! Pressing F will hide your frying pan, allowing you to talk to people again. I'll add an on-screen prompt for this in an update :/ Thanks for your feedback!

There is some really nice touches here and there throughout this game. The use of sound is quite atmospheric and does its job at selling each scenario. The opening scene of the game is great. It has a nice cut in there and the use of title cards is well done throughout. The choice of colours is well thought out and I appreciated it. My major critique is the shocking mouse sensitivity (far too sensitive in my opinion). Though, if the mouse sensitivity is a commentary on the disorientating nature of politics I suppose it may actually be too effective of an analogy because it certainly made me feel spun around at times.

Cool idea to go with a political power theme.
I remember that wheat comment...if it went down like this it certainly was very naughty! Ended up committing 30 assaults.

Lovely little game. Perfect length. Solid visual style too; though your conversation text could have done with a drop shadow, outline, of blending style (several instances of white on white).

The text through walls and on screen mouse cursor were bothersome, so I would love to see a post jam version. I look forward to an excuse to play this again :)

It was a little bit unfinished, but still awesome! Great way of story telling. Loads of originality and humour. Scene it the field was really pretty. I enjoyed playing your game. Thanks for making it! Cheers :)

Oh boy, I've got so much trouble rendering 3D text that can't be see everywhere and only on one side (not for this jam, but for older unity projects), I'm sorry that I didn't remember where I have find a solution, it has take me a lot of research and I wish I could gain time for you :(. I think it was only done by a shader, not even a script, but I'm not sure... Anyway, the game was really funny, didn't know that Theresa May fun fact. Very original twist on the theme ! Great job on the sound design tho, with all the peeps talking and with the sound volume evolving between rooms and distances.

@olowynd: Yeah it's crazy to me that they haven't integrated the fix into the engine yet - it is a shader fix, and i plan on doing it soon. Thanks for the nice words and glad you liked it :)

@flukeshot: thanks for the kind (and detailed) comments, and yeah you're not the first to mention weird mouse problems... they're on my list to investigate. Thanks!

@seannoonan: cheers, and good call on adding drop shadows to avoid white-on-white text - I thought of a quick hacky way to do it and it's in now :)

Also the text on the signs for all the doors can be seen through all the walls somehow??

Really fun game. Loved the visuals and beating people with a frying pan felt really good. Ended up assaulting 52 farmers and all of my staff xD
Also a good use of the theme. Congrats :)

I laughed so much without even knowing the Theresa May thing with wheat fields... This game is great. Graphics are pretty good (besides the weird text bug) and they do the trick, and the sound is good. The storytelling here is phenomenal, and I enjoyed every second of this.

Absolutely hilarious. Only bug I found was that you could keep killing farmers even after the newspaper appears when you get caught.

One of my favourite games this jam, well done!
