Phase Shift by mitjmcc

Phase Shift is a side scrolling shooter where you must use your matter gun to navigate levels filled with intangible platforms. You can temporarily shift platforms in or out of your own dimension, but you must be quick! The shifted space only keeps the platforms aligned with your dimension for a few seconds! Can you survive this gauntlet of deadly enemies and frantic space management?

Cool Game, beautiful 3D graphics and responsive control. I've had a lot of time to figure out how to jump the platforms.

It takes a while to get the controls right but overall it's a cool game! Very well done! :)

Pretty cool game. Has a might no. 9 look and feel to it. I thought it was a bit tough, and after playing it a couple of times, I realized it was because the matter blocks don't stay long enough. It's a good concept though. As @zariel said, the player movement was great!

Two bugs I found: (1) you can hold left/right while jumping against a wall, and stick to it to jump higher; (2) pause and clicking on quit doesn't seem to work.

Cool mechanic! I like how you activate platforms and try to juggle your attention on shooting things or progressing while you at the same time try to not wait too long while the platform you are standing on dissolve.

It was a little buggy with the goo, sometimes you would stand in it while it comes back.

Ir would also be nice with a dotted ring round the ball when you fire it, before it's activated, so you can see how far it is going to effect platforms.

I also dig the jet set radio vibes :)

The jumping is a bit on a worse side, and colliding with the wall and keeping the direction key may effectively give you a wall climb - unless that was intended ability.

I do like the mechanic of the gun allowing you to manifest platforms. With some work, this could be a fun game to play.

Very great job on such little time. Great sound and visuals and unique play style for sure. Maybe adding a short delay before returning to the idle animation so it isn't glitching between aiming position and gun spinning position. Other than some polish this game is great! Thanks for the trip back in time to Jet Set Radio Future!

Hmm, doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm falling right through the floor. Am I doing it wrong?

@jamison No, you were doing it right. Are you using the Mac build by any chance?

@jamison Yeah that's no good. Mind sharing your specs so we can track down the issue?

I figured it out :) I think you've got a lot of FPS-dependent code (notice how quick your bullets drop and the red checkpoint crystal spins when you change the settings to Lowest). I have a 165Hz monitor. Forcing my GPU to 60Hz fixed it.

I liked the character design and graphics. That reload was sweet. It felt like there was some delay when you started moving from a standstill. Clever idea, had fun with it. Nice music choice, too! I wonder if there should be a penalty to continuously firing the matter shot at your feet to stay on the platform, though.

Pizza pepperoni cheese :notes:

Interesting mechanics you got there! Enjoyed playing it til the end, quite challenging, really.

However, some notes:

- I found and used an exploit where you can cling on then climb up vertical blocks by keep moving towards it then jumping rapidly. It helped me skip some puzzles, so you might want to know that;
- Physics and graphical feedbacks could use some improvements. It's kinda annoying when I fall because the green block I thought was intact was in fact affected by the circle;
- The character sure is such a pro skater that she's moonskating everytime she moves backwards, isn't she?

Nice level design, cool mechanic and great exploration of that mechanic. Some of the animations don't blend together nicely but when you're so focused on the gameplay it is easy to stop noticing that. The visuals are also very clean and focused on the core mechanics of the game. <3

Hey I really liked the one. I feel there is some good potential. The phase shift gun is pretty cool and the level design was decent too. Really funky track! The game is slightly deceptive though. At first, because of the similarities to Jet Set Radio visually, speed was a factor. But you actually have to proceed carefully for some of the obstacles. Maybe changing one or the other to better communicate the desired pace. The shooting controls need a lot of work, since that was my greatest source of frustration, besides wonky collision with the gun. Overall though, very clever ideas here.

Great platformer/shooter, with a clever space mechanic and an aesthetic reminiscent of Jet Set Radio !

Pros :
- You definitely hit that Jet Set Radio fiber
- Great audio, nice graphics and animation
- Clever ideas : the matter gun is brilliant

Cons :
- Steep difficulty curve : the matter gun is really hard to master, and the ennemies are unforgiving
- When next to the edge of a platform, the character animation glitches, which is a little confusing when trying to aim with the matter shot

All in all, nice work !

- Movement feels ok, but need to fix that jitter with the fighting of idle and directional firing input.

- This game would be about x10 better if you removed the shooting mechanic and just focused on the phase mechanic, it's solid, translates well, and you did a fair job of visually communicating it.

- The shooting on the other hand, the math for shooting is off, you don't shoot where your mouse is, and you use the 9 lock positions for firing but you can fire at another angle ontop of that, instead of freeze controling it. So it makes it feel really bad.

- Better communication about wall sticking or wall jumping, feels strange that is not communicated

- The jump feels pretty good, the land, if you had access to an animator, a bit more impact and follow through with the top body on land would give it more umf

- I think if you guys had just refined this into 1 mechanic, you could have really made something awesome. It was so close

- Also projectiles, of phase and the other one felt flat no impact to them.

Great game and cool mechanics! I love the little UI elements that show you the controls and gives you the space to test them out; it's simple but always a nice touch when games have that :)
