Phase Shift by mitjmcc
Phase Shift is a side scrolling shooter where you must use your matter gun to navigate levels filled with intangible platforms. You can temporarily shift platforms in or out of your own dimension, but you must be quick! The shifted space only keeps the platforms aligned with your dimension for a few seconds! Can you survive this gauntlet of deadly enemies and frantic space management?

Two bugs I found: (1) you can hold left/right while jumping against a wall, and stick to it to jump higher; (2) pause and clicking on quit doesn't seem to work.
It was a little buggy with the goo, sometimes you would stand in it while it comes back.
Ir would also be nice with a dotted ring round the ball when you fire it, before it's activated, so you can see how far it is going to effect platforms.
I also dig the jet set radio vibes :)
I do like the mechanic of the gun allowing you to manifest platforms. With some work, this could be a fun game to play.
Hmm, doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm falling right through the floor. Am I doing it wrong?
I figured it out :) I think you've got a lot of FPS-dependent code (notice how quick your bullets drop and the red checkpoint crystal spins when you change the settings to Lowest). I have a 165Hz monitor. Forcing my GPU to 60Hz fixed it.
Interesting mechanics you got there! Enjoyed playing it til the end, quite challenging, really.
However, some notes:
- I found and used an exploit where you can cling on then climb up vertical blocks by keep moving towards it then jumping rapidly. It helped me skip some puzzles, so you might want to know that;
- Physics and graphical feedbacks could use some improvements. It's kinda annoying when I fall because the green block I thought was intact was in fact affected by the circle;
- The character sure is such a pro skater that she's moonskating everytime she moves backwards, isn't she? :laughing:
Pros :
- You definitely hit that Jet Set Radio fiber
- Great audio, nice graphics and animation
- Clever ideas : the matter gun is brilliant
Cons :
- Steep difficulty curve : the matter gun is really hard to master, and the ennemies are unforgiving
- When next to the edge of a platform, the character animation glitches, which is a little confusing when trying to aim with the matter shot
All in all, nice work !
- This game would be about x10 better if you removed the shooting mechanic and just focused on the phase mechanic, it's solid, translates well, and you did a fair job of visually communicating it.
- The shooting on the other hand, the math for shooting is off, you don't shoot where your mouse is, and you use the 9 lock positions for firing but you can fire at another angle ontop of that, instead of freeze controling it. So it makes it feel really bad.
- Better communication about wall sticking or wall jumping, feels strange that is not communicated
- The jump feels pretty good, the land, if you had access to an animator, a bit more impact and follow through with the top body on land would give it more umf
- I think if you guys had just refined this into 1 mechanic, you could have really made something awesome. It was so close
- Also projectiles, of phase and the other one felt flat no impact to them.
