ROBOT POWER by Imphenzia
ROBOT POWER
Theme: Running Out of Power Compo Entry
Instructions: * Steer with Left/Right (default is A/D or Arrow Keys) * Use Jump key (default is space) to use booster backpack and fly * Collect batteries to power the robot * Collect the Star Fragments (one on each level) and return to the rocket * Complete all levels * Increase difficulty and repeat the above =)

For the theme I decided to make a game where you play the character of a robot running (and flying) between floating islands to gather star fragments that were scattered following a supernova. Each level contains a star fragment that you need to collect before you return to the rocket that takes you to the next level. Once you've completed all the levels, increase the level of difficulty and try again. How far can you get?

- very nice graphics
- good level design
- theme, atmosphere
(-)
- controls
- no rotation of the robot when using the jetpack, it feels strange
- when you die, you restart at the very beginning ...
Controls are awful! Always spend more time on player controls! Horisontal inertia is too much, and you can't reverse it with jetpack, it feels wrong. Robot stucking on the platform edges. And one time he didn't manage to get inside of the rocked and dragged behind it all the way to the space and back - and when landed, he was uncontrolable. That effectively broken game.
At first I also had so the robot flipped in the air when turning left and right but I changed that (for the good and bad) so he was also facing the way he took off. Sometimes it adds to the challenge because you may be better off flying off an edge in the "wrong" direction to get better propulsion below the drop - but then again I think the fact that it "feels wrong" outweighs the benefit of the added challenge.
The bug of being dragged behind the rocket occurs if you fly to the entry point, I think. I'll see if I can fix it post release now.
Glad the visuals received positive feedback, I was spending quite some time on them while trying to think of the mechanics and plot.
I found the controls to be bit clunky and I got stuck in trees quite often or overshot the target and had to use way too much power to save myself from the fall. I didn't manage to finish too many levels on easy, how hard are the other ones...?
As far as suggestions for the controls... I'm not sure... a jank thought would be to add a bit of slight force to the movements to make them snappier... but I've never tested that...
(had a bug At level 7: the robot glitched out of the rocket and wasn't maneuverable anymore)
The gameplay was solid and smooth, but I feel like the movement felt really floaty (I guess that's fine because of the jetpack though), which made it really hard to navigate easily through the levels. There were also some buggy colliders on which I got stuck and wasted a lot of power, sadly.
Overall, I enjoyed the game a lot, and, for being made in 48h, you did a tremendous job at this!
The controls feel a little clunky unfortunately, especially the jetpack controls.
I can't get over how cool the art style in this is though :)
In-game animations are cool, but the game is rather frustratingly difficult due to hard-to-get-out-of trees collision and no U-turn support while flying.
Is this modelled in Blender? This looks very nice!
I found the controls were a bit numb in the air, but I guess that motivates more precision flying.
I was stuck on the first level until I actually read the instructions that I had to go back to the rocket. On the plus side, I went farther left than the background image :P
Good job though!
good job overall!
(I might just have to give you 5 stars after learning of your... difficult working environment. I experienced something a little similar during my compo)
I also like that you can speed up the intro for each level. Nice detail.
Great work!
