Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games

[raw]
made by SerpentWorks Games for LD 41 (JAM)

Unity<em>2018-04-23</em>17-54-05.png

In which a young boy wakes up, finds out he's a vampire and still soldiers on to get his route finished. Avoid angry vampire hunters, knock on doors, bite-- I mean talk to the townsfolk and make sure they get their news in this odd combination of a roguelite, rpg and bullethell-lite?

The genres are more like... guidelines, anyway.

-- Update Tracker --

v-24: v1.03b Now with a WebGL player for those of you who don't want to download it and fight with your antivirus software to play the game!

Changelog for this update:

  • If you complete all 5 levels the game now will start you back at level 1 instead of just starting the game again and being stuck on the vampire stats screen

  • Fixed some UI text sizing issues so people can actually read things

  • Now all enemies and npcs stop when a dialogue box is up, the tutorial is up, or the game over/level complete screen is up

  • You no longer chuck a paper trying to close the tutorial screen

  • The audio levels now start at 50% (tho the menu does not reflect this) and now effects the sound effects too

4-24: V1.03a Changelog:

  • All scenes will properly load now, in order, when requested

  • Levels will advance if you beat the current one, instead of constantly

  • Players now actually keep their money through the duration of their playthrough, instead of making some and spending it all during level load

  • Reduced the rate the hunter's look radius expands to be more appropriate levels

  • Reduced HP increase on level up to something a bit more... balanced

  • Reduced spawn time for projectiles, so no more accidentally papering a house or sniping a hunter from half way across the map on large maps, and hunters can't snipe you either

  • Time should not pass while the tutorial screen is up

  • Hunters on level 3 are now constrained to their corners of the island and will no longer encroach on the player at load

  • The tutorial will now only show the first time you load up the first level, and not every single time you go to chuck some papers

Known Issues:

  • No visual feedback to eat the villagers, they just sort of... vanish. Silently.

  • Sometimes villagers won't let you out of dialogue if they're mid movement when you talk to them

  • If you beat level 5, there's no "exit only" option

4-23: V1.03 Game has been updated to V1.03, now with standalones for Linux, MacOS and Windows!

Updated game to 1.03;

  • All text has been told to use proper capitalization as necessary

  • All buttons now look like they're supposed to be on the same UI

  • The NPC looking for the cat will no longer end with a semi-colon and never finish their sentence

  • The Level Complete screen now properly deactivates when you press Main Menu.

Until next time!

Cool, fun screen shake, cool concept, good sound effects. Really nice UI. I am unable to progress past the first level, is that a bug? When I beat the first level and click "Main Menu", the level complete screen stays up and covers the main menu so I can't buy anything.

Nice work!

@Chris Hall Easy enough fix! Had to fix some other UI bugs in the process. It should be all good to go now unless something else breaks terribly.

The sound is too loud. Even if you turn it off.

Hm I still have the same issue on the Windows build of 1.03, heres what it looks like when I return to the main menu. When I beat the first level, what is the correct way to progress to the next level? Maybe I am doing it wrong lol ![vampire main menu screenshot.png](///raw/608/d/z/13158.png)

That is... So odd. Hmmm. Might be something on my end with how it's checking the level index to load. I will investigate this.

EDIT: there's a good chance the script didn't save before I built the exe when I went to fix it. Once I can start at code without my eyeballs aching I'll check on that.

Thank you so much for your patience :bow:

Nice graphics, sound are a bit too loud, and there is some bugs with the input reading (pressing E key, activate again, and again dialogs) but pretty nice game ! :smile:

Love the idea of continuing to deliver the news even after being turned into a vampire. It is quite hard to bite people, or maybe I just didn't get how to do it ...

@Al3x3d thank you! I will!

@tokkiseul thank you!

@Sabeurre Yeah, that's a known issue. There's something up with the trigger colliders and for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix it. Thanks for playing!

@Corbak It's related to the above bug unfortunately! You're fine, you just gotta like charge the villager to bite them. Thanks for playing!

@roaderful Oh no! I'm sorry about that; player feedback and giving information to the player is on the list of things to work on.

Thanks for trying it out though!

Simple blood sucking, paper delivering fun.

Hey Nice concept. I didn't really get what advantages talking to people and sucking their blood brings... And I think the stats don't change, when you buy the sun and shadow enhancer thing.

Nice concept! I didn't understand the "sucking blood" mechanics also the, way shooting mechanics feel a little bit clumsy. I didn't like the fact that you have to go back to the main menu to progress to the next level, that should be easily fixed with the Unity Scene manager. Good job!

Talking with the characters didn't seem to have much effect on the gameplay itself, but it felt nice when shooting the enemies and dodging them!
