Broken Light by Xeloglaz

[raw]
made by Xeloglaz for LD 40 (JAM)

Broken Light is an arcade game in which your only goal is to beat your highscore. Your only way to score points is to kill zombies. Seems easy, huh? Not so much:sweat_smile: As you kill more and more zombies "light" around your character(can be interpreted as a field of view) gets smaller and smaller thus making it way harder to spot approaching zombies. Be sure to share your highscores below in the comment section! Mine is 4300, can you beat it?

Also feel free to leave some feedback - Did you liked my game? What to improve? Any future suggestions? - Any feedback is much appreciated!

the game is good but hit indicators would be nice like a sound if I / the enemy gets damage.

A fun little shooter. The graphics and sound effects is good. I would have a end goal, and perhaps a small story. But overall a good LD game. Well Done.

Thanks @nexusbreaker for suggestion! That would be great addition. Haven't thought of that when developing

Thanks @jk5000 for feedback! Glad you liked my game:smile: I don't know about the story but end goal or some more levels are definitely great idea, especially for an arcade game.

If you plan on developing this further I think that a bigger area to move around in with the camera following the player would be great.

Thanks for feedback @minimurgle! I for sure will not stop developing it (at least for now:wink:), and your suggestion is going into To-do list for future updates.

Audio, in general, is awesome and the lightning effect is pretty too.
One problem is that you can move outside the camera, but otherwise its pretty good!

@xclementx I'm sorry to hear that! Can you describe what's the problem? I haven't really tested it on MacOS:confused:

@xclementx The problem seems to be caused by the .rar extension. Updated the link above to .zip file. (Tested on my Macbook so there should be no problems with it now:smile:)

Nice game! The art is simple but well made, I like it :P

I just don't understand why the player vision gets smaller :x

Thanks @jean for feedback! Glad you liked it! The vision gets smaller for one main reason: Following the theme. "The more you have, the worse it is" is interpreted as The more zombies you kill the harder it gets

I enjoyed the game. Firing the gun is satisfying with good sound effects, particle effects, knockback, and low enemy health selling each shot. I feel like I have good control of the character as I move around. Because constant movement is so important to staying alive I feel like it would have been nice if the reload button was bound to a key that could be pressed by a finger not doing something else, like shift, ctrl, space, or the right mouse button. While the art is nothing to write home about it is easy to tell what is going on. It would have been nice to have some sound effect for when the player gets damaged.

Thank you so much @county-agent for your feedback! Glad you've enjoyed my game. Custom key bindings would be definitely a useful feature. I really like the idea of other key being responsible for reloading(especially RMB). Your suggestion is for sure going to my To-Do list for future updates:slight_smile:

You had all the basic mechanics down so good job there :D Pretty fun for a short arcade style game, might be good with (as mentioned above) some form of story / end goal :)

This game is really good.

I really love what you did with the shiny background. The bullet when you shoot is also phenomenal as well.
Suggestion for graphics: Even though I really like the background, it would be better if the other graphics in the game is of the same type. Making 2D graphics on a 3D-ish background is okay, but I think you can remove the black border in your game sprites (the player and the zombie). Also maybe make the score and the number of bullets left box bigger.

Audio: I really like the theme song and the sound effect when you shoot. But maybe add a creepy background audio when you play the game and raise the volume of the shooting sound would help you make the game more scary. (I assume that this is a horor-ish game as it is dark. If it is not, just raise the volume and your game might be better)

Theme: The theme in a way fits the theme. However, I would like more explanation for why the light zone is smaller, the more kills you get. The theme is also the more you HAVE so maybe you could also add some additional function to make it fit the game better. Having more kills is a little bit clichey.

Overall, really good game, I really love it when it gets darker.

Not bad. Though simple, the game is complete as a top-down zombie shooter.

Suggestion: one common way to make simple game more fun is to have "collect coin and buy upgrade" system.

Maybe you allow player upgrade the reload time bullet damage.

Another thing that could improve the game design is "adding some highlight", like the big dot in pac-man, or the bombs in flight shooters. In your case, maybe a grande to kill all the zombies in screen. On such design is enough to have the player "hoping " during the more usual game-play.

Thank you so much @bastienre4 @x-budsterized-x @doswosh @james-studd @kyrv19 @kyle-pham @guoboism for your feedback! I'm really glad you liked my first game, this means very much to me.

@kyle-pham The light zone simply gets smaller because I wanted it to be harder to kill more zombies as you get the higher score. It's just for the sake of your highscore beeing really your highscore not just your luck. Thank you also for your suggestion about adding some more functions. About the graphics, I think that removing black border would make it look overall more vector-like, which effect I really like. About the UI, I'm definitely adding to my To-Do list for future updates sizeable UI:smile:

@guoboism Thank you for your tips. Those special items (such as a grenade) would really improve gameplay overall and would probably keep players interested for much longer:smiley:
