Hah! I laughed out loud when I went to Start, expecting to immediately transition to the first level, but fell off the cliff first, immediately setting the mood and what to expect. Nice touch!

Took me a bit to get the hang of the tank controls -- definitely adds a level of difficulty.

Its fun and interesting, but feels incomplete. There should definantly at least be a few more levels.

wow this is my favourite one so far! The graphics are stellar, first off. I love the blocky colour art style that this game has. And I definitely laughed aloud a few times as well. Good work - this could make a stellar mobile game!
Also, my chicks fell off a cliff and I laughed, am I a horrible person?

@milo-the-cool-guy I totally agree, there was so much I wanted to do but simply didn't have time. Because this is largely built from scratch in my own engine that I hadn't long ported to the web I had to spend a lot of time implementing and fixing various essential features like shadow mapping, etc.

Did you actually complete all 3 levels? I've not heard from anyone that has yet :D

Something to re-visit in the future perhaps!

@papacheech Wow, thank you! As someone who considers themselves completely terrible at art things, it makes me happy to hear that people actually enjoy the visuals on this!

And it doesn't make you a bad person, you was just bringing them to *salvation* as the chicken gods desired :o

AHHHHHHHHHHH THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL SPEED.

The tank controls really are the game's biggest strength and weakness. On one hand, they make up the main gimmick of the controls and on the other hand, they are probably the first things players blame when things get hard. It's fun to skebop around though, so it works out in the end.

Your engine is really well done. If you hadn't said anything I would have assumed it to be made with a premade engine. Didn't notice any bugs either. Impressive work!

The graphics are very good in this game. The mechanics can be polished a little bit, but the concept is good. Good job!

Clever and fun, but a bit hard to control. That chicken could use a bit more friction between it and the ground!

Needs an in game tutorial, tank controls feel weak.

Very cute but also unexpectedly difficult, for me at least. Oh well, it was still quite fun, even though I didn't get anywhere near finishing the game.

I'll try a different browser, but when I tried with Edge I got: "Exception thrown, see JavaScript console"
🎤 exezin
05. Dec 2017 · 05:11 UTC
Could you open up the JS console and see what it says? It's most likely that your browser simply doesn't support stuff like WebGL2, its pretty new so you need an up-to-date Chrome or Firefox preferably. If you're on something like safari I think you need to manually enable experimental WebGL2 support

edit; I'm tired and totally overlooked the Edge part, iirc Edge simply doesn't have support for WebGL2 yet because MS is slow at doing stuff :p

Nice and simple graphics! Strange to control and I didnt even complete level 1 (if the start thing is like a menu). I think the problem sits in front of the screen here, huh? Anyway. Interesting idea.
Btw. my Vivaldi browser doesnt run the game too, so I used Chrome.

Immediately hangs, mouse cursor disappears, and the game view is corrupted (random pixels over probably 1/3 the view) for me - macOS / Chrome.

05. Dec 2017 · 08:55 UTC
@rsim What hardware are you on? It could be old drivers or just shoddy WebGL2 support.

05. Dec 2017 · 09:33 UTC
MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra 10.12.6 with a Nvidia GeForce GT 750M. Drivers are all from Apple (NV doesn't provide any for macOS). As a datapoint, I haven't had any issues with the ~30 other WebGL games I've played from the compo, but maybe Unity has an auto-fallback for WebGL2 or something?

@exezin To follow up, I just tried in FireFox and while the graphics aren't corrupted and the game runs, it's veeeery slow - about 2 FPS, perhaps 1, and as such unplayable unfortunately. Certainly shouldn't be such bad performance on this machine.
🎤 exezin
05. Dec 2017 · 18:49 UTC
@rsim There's not much I can say to be honest, my best guess would be shoddy WebGL 2 support because it is *very* new, came out this year I think. I even get decent performance on my first gen intel laptop with no dedicated GPU :/ Possibly a OSX-specific issue.

There's no reason you should get that sort of performance out of that sort of hardware, I think you're the only user to experience this so far :(

Being a mother hen is some work, but getting to throw your babies around is a lot of fun. I liked how you transitioned levels with the sinking and emerging animation. Very nice. I had a lot of trouble with the ramp on that second level but I finally got it. Mother hens tend to slide more than I thought they would. Thanks for putting it out in html5 format.

**FYI:** I played it in Firefox Quantum and it was buttery smooth.

I enjoyed the graphics and the smooth movement - well fit for the theme.
One critic: I really dislike this kind of movement behaviour (rotation by A&D, move in direction by W) - I'm curious how it would work out with WASD in directional matters
🎤 exezin
05. Dec 2017 · 19:41 UTC
@fis I agree that generic 'move where you press' would probably be a lot easier to control, but bhopping was a pretty big aspect in this and I couldn't make it work well in non tank-like movement setups :(

05. Dec 2017 · 19:46 UTC
Wow, this game is harder than Dark Souls xD.
Couldn't beat the first level :(
Control scheme is an interesting idea. Maybe some more visual cues would help judging one's speed and jumping direction. I had a hard time judging from where to jump.

Looks really cool though,so nice job.

The graphics and transitions were great, the sound is just what we need and I really felt I was going to be free. But I must be missing something. I just couldn't make the jump to side of the first stage. And I tried. A lot. After reading the comments I figure it's probably me the problem haha
But anyway, solid concept, fun game!

This is great, but also so hard that it becomes frustrating. For a long time I didn't know that I can move faster by running and jumping. I don't know. It has a great potential, but is a bit too hard for me.

Awesome, a game I thought I'd never see, a bhopping hardcore puzzle(?) platformer with chickens :)

Controls felt a tad bit too unprecise - in aiming and when you try to stop. This game would definitely need some learning curve, though! I love the idea, lovely implementation and polish.

I really liked the death/respawn level animation, straight from a quality puzzler!

You're a mummy chicken guiding her chicks to safety so it seems like a pretty chill game to start with when it takes a sudden dark turn
You just have bounce around and try to keep your chicken shaped jet plane from spiraling out of control and going for a dive bomb in the ocean while managing to keep your baby chicks from committing suicide...
I love it.

@exezin Now I like this game even more! Man this chicken can be fast. I did the first level :) tried the second for more than a few times, couldn't do it... I guess the controls are making it hard. In one of those retries I landed on the tree at the beginning of the level and then crossed to another tree and it just made me feel like I've accomplished something even though I didn't get till the end of the level. :D

Nice idea, decent 3d graphics and quite well polished. However The game play was not my cup of tea. the floor did not have enough friction for my liking and the jumps were too difficult, either the chicken could jump further and higher or the distance could be shorter. Innovative idea in a nice setting though.

Cute game :) the graphics are well done and it is pleasant to play (well actually it's a bit more difficult on an azerty keyboard but I can imagine it plays nicer on a qwerty one). I did get stuck in a fence once and did not understand right away that the chicken could move without jumping but great entry overall !

I find this quite impressive that you did all of this using your own engine and opengl(as a apprentice programmer who uses unity:3 ) The artstyle is awesome, the general gameplay is good. The only thing I didn't really like was that the chicken kept sliding, which felt a bit annoying on edges, especially with chick just falling to there death, amazing entry overall :3

The game is OK but not very playable. Graphics looks nice. Fast to load. Controls are not good. Text rendering not very readable. I looked at your engine source, +1 for effort, C and webgl is sooooooooooooooo verbose. Kudos for getting text and shader to work, I don't even know how you can debug such thing through the layers of emscripten compilation. The mere fact of getting your engine to work is quite an achievement. Well done !

So... you found a bug in your jumping mechanic, and you decided to make that the main mechanic of your game? That's certainly an unusual source of inspiration!

Unfortunately, I think that mechanic was poorly communicated. I don't see why a chicken should be able to go faster by repeatedly jumping, and it doesn't feel right for a chicken walking on grass to have such a slippery slowdown when releasing the arrow key. Even in your description you are hiding the explanation of your core mechanic behind a cryptic "I CANT FIGURE IT OUT!!! Watch this" link, which makes it seem like the player is expected to figure it out on their own even though the game does nothing to lead the player towards that discovery. Speaking of not guiding the player very well: I still don't know if I'm supposed to throw my chicks at the yellow arrow or if I'm supposed to gather them all around me and walk past the cliff myself. I also have no idea what the yellow egg does. I see that there is a game somewhere in there, but I can't play it, because the rules are too unclear and the controls are so frustrating that I don't really want to spend the time to figure it out.

(I didn't rate the game because I did not feel like I saw all there was to see)
