Laser Racer by Kappinski

[raw]
made by Kappinski for LD 42 (JAM)

First time at Ludum Dare. How does this work? Can you see my game? D:

Sadly I have no time to make my own character but maybe in a later version :)

Can you take the challenge?

WARNING This game is really hard

Your game is really difficult! I think the wall should move a little slower. With wich software did you make the music?

I used Rytmik Studio for the music. And yes. It is difficult :D but it is possible and it is just one level. I was also thinking about different difficult levels... but no time :D

Funny game ! I like the art, and the disco voice that say "run" and "fail" make me smile a lot ;) Maybe you should make the character jump higher, in a way where the player can jump over a single block with a single jump (for now, it seems that a double jump is required to jump over a single block). I think difficulty mostly come from that fact. Well done though ^^

The game is tough. It feels like the controls can be a bit inconsistent. Some checkpoints would be helpful too!

The game was pretty cool. I liked the art, especially the character. It was really challenging, but in a good way! Great job.

I GOT IT! Although I often felt like I was cheated because the double jump did not work in every place I wanted it to work :P Nice work!

I got one block from the end  I think the jump height needs tweaking ever so slightly, just missing the top of one cube with one jump was more annoying then challenging. Good job overall

That platforming felt really good. Mid-air control felt just about right. If I had one suggestion, it would be nice to know how close the laser wall is behind you, maybe with a sound or visual indicator. I wasn't sure at the end how much time I could spend waiting to time my jumps.

I loved the transparent laser textures, bloom filter, and motion blur.

Very nice. I love the atmosphere. Reminded me a lot of Tron. Good premise in a game. Pretty frustrating getting to those last blocks and sliding off. I'm ashamed to admit it... but I rage quit. lol Well done!

Thank you for sharing the game with my stream! I had a blast playing it! I loved trying to figure out different routes to find the optimal path. The difficulty definitely jumped up pretty quickly, but it's something that I wanted to keep playing! Well done!

I loved the neon visuals on this. Controls were smooth, jumping felt right and not floaty when trying to move while jumping. The difficulty ramp between each section felt smooth and nicely thought out.

You were right, it is very difficult! As @eric-smith said, it remind me of Tron.

FUN: Part of what made it so difficult was the platforming. While it was easy to control, it was really hard to navigate around the boxes in the beginning, and to land correctly on the floating blocks without losing too much time. While some people might enjoy this difficulty, I guess it's just not for me.
I'm all for games that have no HUD, but a small indicator for the laser grid's position would have helped a lot. The different sections were well balanced and designed. It kept me playing for a while! 3.5/5

INNOVATION: I didn't see anything unique here mechanically, just another endless runner. 1/5

THEME: I don't think that theme allowed for much unique interpretation. And this interpretation doesn't strike me as either fitting the theme very well or being very original. 1/5

AUDIO: The soundtrack was great! It kind of reminded me of the action scenes from the Lego Movie . It was fast-paced and really upped the ante. However, it was pretty repetitive. 2/5

HUMOR: I'm not sure why you didn't opt out of this category, since it doesn't seem to be a funny game? I did get a chuckle from the cheesy 'Run!' voice clip at the start. 1/5

MOOD: The atmosphere of the whole world was very well done, and the neon colors really popped and made it seem more futuristic. As a whole, though, I felt like it was missing something that I can't quite put my finger on. 3.5/5

I wish I could rate you on graphics (kudos for opting out since you used the default playermodel), they were very good! You would have gotten 4/5.

OVERALL: This is a very solid jam entry! I didn't encounter any bugs, the game as a whole seemed well thought out, and I had a good time playing it. 3.5/5

Good job on your first jam, you should be very proud!

You weren't kidding about it being very hard. :P

I think the jump could have been a bit higher to match the blocks, although granted that would make it a ton easier. Music was good, loved the visual aesthetic. Here's a video of my play and feedback: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/303323177
