The World's Worst Segway by doomshmuck

[raw]
made by doomshmuck for LD 39 (COMPO)

The genius engineers at Brainchewer Industries have discovered the secret to the world's LONGEST LASTING battery. It is said to go for years without needing a charge!

Too bad you work for Not-Brainchewer Industries, where they have been using the same battery since 1924. As a result, you are now the proud owner of The World's Worst Segway, a segway where it has the battery life of a Nintendo Wii controller. You have taken a delivery service job at a somewhat busy neighborhood, and it's you shift. Make us proud!

The objectives of the game are to make deliveries to very demanding customers. If you are even a millisecond too late, they will deduct from your pay! Oh, and in case your segway runs out of juice, well, you will have to drag that thing back to the charge pad. And beware the dangerous car... it will smack you into the hemisphere!

I like sound effects, especially angry 'beep beep'. Gameplay is pretty neat and requires some planning and reflexes to get a good score. In overall game is pretty neat and entertaining to play.

Lol the music and sounds are fantastic :)

The car seemed to hit me a few times when I thought I was safe, but otherwise very fun!

Very well made game here. I have no complaints bug wise, however i think the building that block the player should be made more clear with a diffrent color than the sidewalk.

Hey cool game, grats on finishing! It reminded me a lot of crazy taxi, having to zip around and get to where you're going on time. The truck was a nice touch, and I definitely died to it once. Plus I really liked your description haha

Looks like a fun game, I wished I could play, if only controls used arrows keys along with those WASD keys which make it quite difficult on azerty keyboards.

Graphics.
The buildings with the shadows are good and so is the truck, but the characters don
t look good. 2/5.

Theme.
3/5 seems to be what everyone is doing just steadily draining power supply.

Audio.
Best category, music is good, sound effects. Very nice. 5/5

Fun.
Get very boring very quickly sorry to say. 2/5.

Humor.
The segway passengers are funny, pretty sure they are all homer simpson. 4/5.

Innovation.
2/5 nothing stands out in gameplay.

480!

I like the music, very funky! :-)

The sound effect is strange, is that a "whohoo"?

The graphics are very funny actually, I would not have recognized the segway had it not been for the name of the game :-)

A nice game, it would not have needed to be in 3D, though. You could have had much better 2D graphics and the top-down view is 3D effectively. Also I at first got stuck on the gray buildings in the center that looked like the gray steeet, you should have used a different color there :-)

Overall a fun little game, thank you and keep up the good work!

Well, I can't figure out how to update the description above, so I'll just make a comment. I have made a slight patch to the game, which can be found at the second web URL I added above. Here are the patch notes:

Patch 1: From comments below, I have updated the game slightly. See here: http://mathewstrauss.com/Segway/v2 (I didn't do a windows build for this version)
* Patch Notes:
** Updated base color of the buildings to a green-ish color so that it stands out from the road.
** Added arrow key movement for those who don't have w, a, s, and d.
* Original release is still at http://mathewstrauss.com/Segway/

@digitaldude555
I would like to know what about the gameplay you found boring, and why you thought the graphics were so bad? You didn't really give much detail, and I can't really get anything out of what you said there to improve.

@elgregos
I added in arrow key controls for ya, if you see this comment. See the patch notes above.

@gonutz
They are saying "Wooo!" hehe. I actually explicitly went 3D for a couple of reasons, namely that I wanted to do something in 3D (which I haven't done before). Interestingly, I actually found it easier to work in 3D than I did in 2D (my LD38 entry was 2D and it looked reallllly bad). I think, for me at least, it is actually easier to make art in 3D than it is 2D.

It was an interesting game. The mechanics felt somewhat complete(unlike a lot of LD games). It bothered me how the particles turned with whatever they were coming from. Also, the car hitbox changes in a weird way when it turns(it turned right while I was on the left side of the turn and it hit me when it turned). The buildings/ground could've used some artwork. If you're going for just voxels, then try to at least put more texture in it. Good work though!

Nice entry! I really liked the music. Did get a little boring after a while. Maybe some variation in obstacles or some powerups would have fixed that, but given the time constraints you did really well! Good game!

It was okay. The controls felt a bit stiff but the music was kinda cool. Good job.

Nicely done! Music is really good and the sound effects are funny :) Graphics are good, but it would be nice if the middle part had another colour, it looks like a drivable road now.

Gameplay is lots of fun, the controls are really direct and snappy! The length of the game could be halved, so that you quickly can try to beat your own score.

Overall very well done!

Great game.

There are few annoying things though:
- Car is slower than player so you have to wait the car sometimes.
- Building and roads have similar colour
- Collisions are tricky

I really liked how the recharge mechanic was clear and simple. Of all the LD39 games I've played I think it was the easiest to understand, and it kept me playing longer. Well done!

Very fun game! I love those sounds ("meep meep" :D). The mechanics are so simple and easy to pick up, but nonetheless this game is fun as hell.

Hehe, a segway delivery service is a strangely fun concept.

I kept running into the "plaza" in front of the middle building. Somehow I kept thinking it was a road. Perhaps make the color a bit more like the buildings, or make it similarly stand out?

Highest score: 350
