Arnold, the dazed Grasshopper by 11tomi12

[raw]
made by 11tomi12 for LD 42 (JAM)

Meet Arnold, your usual Grasshopper. Well, not so usual. He has a rare genetic dysfunction and needs special medication to be able to see clearly. His medication? Magic Mushrooms! Help Arnold find his home by collecting Shrooms and exploring levels. And watch out for cacti(cactuses). They are hiding everywhere and not very healthy for Arnold to step on.

We implemented the theme "Running out of space" by narrowing down Arnold's vision over time, thus he is running out of space. Leave a comment down below and link your games so we can try them out! Thank you so much for playing!

The art is pretty nice, the cacti don't look dangerous enough so I tried to eat them, which was a mistake :D

Jumping controls take a bit getting used to, but it's a nice platformer.

I like the art and the way the Grasshopper controlls.
The pickups and cacti are quite hard to see, they blend in the background/grass too much.

I like idea with black circle
You need to make controls smoother. Because of this it's really hard to complete 6 level

Challanging platformer, with interesting controls! I liked the graphics, but the audio was quite annoying after a while. I couldn't get farther than level 6, there were cactuses everywhere! :(

very nice graphics. but the controlls are a bit clunky. especially when you change direction midair.
The black circle is very nice sometimes the only solution is a leap of faith with a jump into the darkness this was nice ^^

I really like the game art and story behind it. Also, the way that you tied this with this was very good. Controls feel really good and intuitive. The only thing that I would change is that I would colour the obstacles that kill you in red because now you cannot separate them from other stuff. And shrooms could be like yellow or have some glow because it happened that I accidentally picked up the shroom now knowing that I was gonna do it. I reached level 6 and in this level, the view would get small to quickly.

Good theme, nice little platformer. Controls are not tight enough for harder parts, you dont have that precise control. But overall fun game.

Great game, I loved the awkward movement of the grasshopper. The level design is quite devious at times, but very fun. Awesome platformer.

This is one of those games that keeps you saying "one more try...one more try". The jumping controls start a little strange at first but kind of grows on you. It forces you to get creative with controlling how far you jump. The only thing I want to recommend adding is a mid-level checkpoint as sometimes you die right after getting past a section that requires perfect positioning. I'll have to finish beating all the levels when I have more time!

Nice game! The concept is hilarious, and the music awesome, but the jumping is really awkward. I don't know if that was the point, but I would definitely recommend altering the jump in some way (Maybe make it so you jump less high, I was always overshooting my jumps). Other than that, well done!

I find the controller nicely polished (with audio and animation). Only small issue I had was changing direction when jumping, I think the rotation point is off so the char end up offset after turning. Nice little game, good effort

Pretty interesting and you fit the theme in the perfect way to give complexity to the game. Super cool graphics, I think that the idea envolving a grasshopper is so unusual and so creative. Good game my man!

Both the art and the animation we very well done. I really like the gameplay but I wish the the cactuses we are bit easier to sea against the ground and the background

This is an interesting take on the theme. The graphics and sound effects are good, and the central mechanic is well-implemented, but I agree with the other reviewers: the jumping and mid-air controls just feel off somehow, and caused me to die on multiple occasions. That really needs fixing.

The shrooms and cacti also need to stand out more: I ran into the cactus at the end of Level 1 without even realising it was there and was very confused about why I'd died all of a sudden. At the very least, there should be an in-game controls screen with pictures of the shrooms and cacti and brief descriptions, so you know what to look out for.

A beautiful and challenging game !
I wanted to try to touch a cacti too, but I see I'm not the only one to die this way Haha
