# :sheep: for the good of the - H E R D - :sheep:

:sheep: Desciption :sheep:

Get your :sheep: to the :house: without getting caught by the :wolf:. To ensure the most :sheep: survive, you might have to sacrifice a few. Remember: the :wolf: is very lazy and will hunt helpless animals before he'll hunt other animals. If you hit one of your :sheep: with 'space', you could create a distraction.

Press 'e' to tell your :sheep: that they need to hurry up. This is a very draining action, so make sure to grab some :apple: along the way.

:sheep: Tools used :sheep:

The following tools were used to create H E R D: - Unity (game engine) - MonoDevelop (IDE) - Mulab (music) - Keystation (MIDI hardware) - Audacity (sound effects) - Clip Studio Paint Pro (art) - Wacom tablet (drawing hardware) - Cheetah 3d (modeling, UV mapping, animating)

:sheep: Process :sheep:

This is how the game was made: 1. I started brainstorming in the morning and came with the idea of sacrificing sheep to a wolf. 2. I developed the game in my head. 3. I started making 3d models, animations and textures. 4. I started programming controls and AI. 5. I made music and sound effects. 6. Even more programming. 7. Made a 3d model for the barn. 8. Tweaked some final variables. 9. Uploaded everything and updated my ld page. 10. Uploaded source code. 12. (Post jam) fixed broken UI proportions (no code added)

Holy cow! The graphics are incredible! Amazing work, I would have thought this was a jam game but no, it was all done by one person in 48 hours... That is so cool! Also sheep are among my favorite animals so killing them was very sad for me ;-; I'm not really sure what the apples do. I kept sacrificing sheep but no new ones showed up.

03. Dec 2018 · 09:47 UTC
@fat-cat I think you missed the point haha. It costs an apple to press 'e'. Also, killing sheep is merely meant to distract the wolf. If you kill a sheep, the wolf will be attracted by the body and will therefore not attack you (even if you get near him). And sheep don't respawn, they die.

Thanks for the feedback :-)

Wow, awesome graphics for 48hrs! I was so proud of myself for getting to the end and the game really shut me down haha.

It was very hard and the level felt quite long. Well done in such short time. Nice art!

@twopm Thanks, I'm glad you were so invested. It pains me to see that broken piece of UI in the top right of your screen haha :sheep:

@fnissalot Thank you ^^ was it long and difficult in a good way or would you've like the game to be shorter and easier?
Fnissalot
03. Dec 2018 · 10:06 UTC
@king-kujito I would probably liked it a bit shorter. Not easier as in difficulty, but maybe easier to see how you will affect the sheep? My herding skills are not on point so it was hard to manage to push the sheep forward through the level. I had issues with predicting how I would affect the sheep which made it feel a bit hard. It mostly felt like they ran in random directions when I were getting close. I might have missed something with how you should play it though?

@fnissalot That's some good feedback. The sheep always run directly away from you, but in hindsight they should be a little bit biased to walk towards your destination.

I wanted to say this was PERFECT, but that level is way too long!
The art is fantastic, the sound is cute, and the theme fits really well!! :sheep:

If I made one change, i'd make the level way shorter. And split what you had into other levels.
The UI and gameplay are great. it's just the length.

@pandan Thank you very much ^^ I was running out of time so I made on big how-far-can-you-get level instead of multiple levels. It would be great though to make many different levels each with unique challenges :-)

I could save only one sheep, sacrificed ones never will be forgotten

I loved the music, graphics looks perfect. I had fun. But level is too long as said, it was hard  Well done !

Game looks just perfect! But I think it would be better with the button for changing the vertical inversion of camera. Also audio is pretty cool. To be honest, your game reminds me about some 3D RPGs:)

Very nice art style. The music and sound effect could get a bit tedious though.
This could as a game with many short levels that grow rather then one big level.

Surely the most complete 3D game submitted in the jam! Really impressive to have created all those assets in 48 hours, it was pretty challenging and I only managed to get 1 sheep to the barn, but thats fine! Well done!

Incredible graphics in the time. Didn't believe it until I watched the timelapse! Love the names of the sheep and the little comments. Found the gameplay frustrating, but in a good way - I have no doubt if I played it a bit more I would get used to the controls and be able to save more sheep!

My wife and I burst into laughter when I was murdered in cold blood. Bravo!

Pretty impressive in technical terms, it's difficult to believe this was made under 48 hours, but the timelapse is there to prove otherwise.

Btw, the mouse cursor stops working when you go back to the menu.

The level felt a bit drawn out. One sheep got stuck inside a bush. An option to Inverse Y for the camera would have been great. Overall a cool game though :D

- Graphics were great
- audio was ok
- camera movement had some issues
- was hard to figure out were to send the sheep because of the camera issue
- would have been good to have the Sacrifice/encourage buttons on the UI as reference.

Wow, fantastic job! Easily one of the best looking compo entries I've seen so far. The game itself plays well enough, even though some of the sheep are just so darned fickle to squeeze through some of the tighter sections. The music is okay, but I ended up muting it after the first couple of minutes.

Also chiming in on the mouse cursor issue, I have the same problem when I go back to the menu. The mouse disappears for some reason.

Regardless, it's a really solid entry!

Very good work with the art in such a short time! Not even many jam games manage this much.

I found the gameplay a bit confusing and I think you should have opted for a bit smaller level.

04. Dec 2018 · 16:33 UTC
I like your take on the theme. I also liked how you gave names to each of the sheep, to make it more personal when one of them died. It made you want to save as many as you could. It's too bad you can't hit the wolf. That could make for some interesting interactions. The visuals seemed a little disjointed, with the 3D models combined with the flat 2D more cartoonish graphics, but nothing looked bad. Overall, you did a great job. Nice work!

I really enjoyed this entry! The graphics were very nice and the audio was appropriate for the strange chaotic frantic gameplay trying to stay ahead of the wolf! I think the sacrifice mechanic worked well and it was nerve wracking being able to look back and see the wolf slowly making his way towards you!

Unfortunately I ran into an an issue where I kept being moved outside the fence and couldn't get back in. Overall I really enjoyed the game though!

The game was running smoothly in general, I can't recall if there was a lag spike right before it happened as it happened so quickly and I would just suddenly be on the other side of the fence. Sorry I can't be more specific!

Cute little game and the visuals are pretty nice. Think that you could have worked a little bit more on the game mechanic. Maybe it would have beed more fun if the sheeps where actually following a path and you had to prevent the wolf from doing stuff to the sheep. Nice effort overall though!

Nice little game there. The graphics are really nice and good work on the animations. My only gripe is that the camera turn speed was extremely high. It made it hard to control and made me dizzy. I played the webGL version, maybe it doesn't happen in the desktop version?
Good job anyways!

Thanks for the nice comments, guys! It seems some of you have noticed my time budgeting on the music side but clearly the spare time for modeling and animating has been appreciated :-)

I'll see if I can find some time this weekend to create a version that fixes the disappearing mouse, adds optional inverted camera controls and camera sensitivity changes. I'll make sure this version will be clearly separated from the compo version like I did in previous LDs. ^^

Also special thanks to @smurf @denifia @gaming-night for giving the best comments ever haha.

really nice graphics and audio, the game was quite difficult as the sheep seem to prefer running backwards. There was also a bug when returning to the menu didn't show the cursor so you couldn't restart. Overall the graphics and audio were really good and with a bit of polishing the gameplay could be really good too.

I have to admit, when I first saw screenshots to your game I thought this was a Jam game in the wrong category, the graphics were just too great. Then I saw your time lapse video and realized you're just a modelling and texturing wizard. Kudos to you, for a Compo game the visuals are amazing.

The gameplay ties in nicely with the setting, although I didn't feel the difference between sacrificing a sheep and leaving it behind was really palpable. I understood the reference to the theme, but it felt a bit tacked on.

The apple mechanics I think may have worked a bit better if you used it to lure the sheep in instead of shooing them away, since it was tricky to get the herd to stick together. Maybe a free "shoo" command and a limited "lure" command (with collecting apples) may have been a better choice. Using the apple to lure would also be the more logical expectation, unless it's meant to replenish the herders' energy.

The music is nice, but unfortunately you chose "musical" step noises which created a second melody that grated a bit against the main song. Lowering the volume of the steps, randomizing their notes and using a more inconspicuous sound effects may have alleviated this a bit.

I managed to save one sheep but probably won't make it through the winter. :(

Nice game overall with outstanding visuals.

I really liked the Graphics. stearing the sheep was somewhat awkward, but that is - after all - a key element of such games, so no harm done. The inverted and as far as I could see not reversable camera didn't help this thought. The level was also pretty long. At some point I lost my temper a bit and just took a couple of sheep to the end because I didnt want to start over - I think shorter level of increasing difficulty would have suited the game better, but there is always just so much you can do in 72h and you accomplished amazing graphics and very fitting music.

This is a really great looking and sounding game for a jam effort - so polished in such a short time!

I like the concept and the gameplay, and the graphics are amazing. I had a few playthroughs of this and it was a good balance of frustration and challenge! the sheep move in a predictable but variable way which means you inevitably end up either losing a few or chasing them back on track which is really good and stops it just being a maths equation to sacrifice X amount.

comments for improvement would only be that less repetitive BGM would be good and also a few times i had collision problems with the sheep and the bushes, but these were very minor.

One of the best ive played from the whole jam! :)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet:

![ezgif-1-4bdd91b2acc5.gif](///raw/4c3/a1/z/1fde8.gif)

You can just walk through the barn and past where the terrain ends, where gravity literally has no effect. Confirmed: Farmer is a ghost.

But honestly, this game was one of the prettiest 3d games I've ever seen for a Ludum Dare, and it was done within 48 hours? Wow!
