H E R D by King Kujito

# :sheep: for the good of the - H E R D - :sheep:
:sheep: Desciption :sheep:
Get your :sheep: to the :house: without getting caught by the :wolf:. To ensure the most :sheep: survive, you might have to sacrifice a few. Remember: the :wolf: is very lazy and will hunt helpless animals before he'll hunt other animals. If you hit one of your :sheep: with 'space', you could create a distraction.
Press 'e' to tell your :sheep: that they need to hurry up. This is a very draining action, so make sure to grab some :apple: along the way.

:sheep: Tools used :sheep:
The following tools were used to create H E R D: - Unity (game engine) - MonoDevelop (IDE) - Mulab (music) - Keystation (MIDI hardware) - Audacity (sound effects) - Clip Studio Paint Pro (art) - Wacom tablet (drawing hardware) - Cheetah 3d (modeling, UV mapping, animating)
:sheep: Process :sheep:
This is how the game was made: 1. I started brainstorming in the morning and came with the idea of sacrificing sheep to a wolf. 2. I developed the game in my head. 3. I started making 3d models, animations and textures. 4. I started programming controls and AI. 5. I made music and sound effects. 6. Even more programming. 7. Made a 3d model for the barn. 8. Tweaked some final variables. 9. Uploaded everything and updated my ld page. 10. Uploaded source code. 12. (Post jam) fixed broken UI proportions (no code added)

Thanks for the feedback :-)

@fnissalot Thank you ^^ was it long and difficult in a good way or would you've like the game to be shorter and easier?
The art is fantastic, the sound is cute, and the theme fits really well!! :sheep:
If I made one change, i'd make the level way shorter. And split what you had into other levels.
The UI and gameplay are great. it's just the length.
I loved the music, graphics looks perfect. I had fun. But level is too long as said, it was hard  Well done !
This could as a game with many short levels that grow rather then one big level.
Nice game! Well done graphics incredible!
Awesome idea to give them all names!
My wife and I burst into laughter when I was murdered in cold blood. Bravo!
Btw, the mouse cursor stops working when you go back to the menu.
- audio was ok
- camera movement had some issues
- was hard to figure out were to send the sheep because of the camera issue
- would have been good to have the Sacrifice/encourage buttons on the UI as reference.
Also chiming in on the mouse cursor issue, I have the same problem when I go back to the menu. The mouse disappears for some reason.
Regardless, it's a really solid entry!
I found the gameplay a bit confusing and I think you should have opted for a bit smaller level.
Unfortunately I ran into an an issue where I kept being moved outside the fence and couldn't get back in. Overall I really enjoyed the game though!
Good job anyways!
I'll see if I can find some time this weekend to create a version that fixes the disappearing mouse, adds optional inverted camera controls and camera sensitivity changes. I'll make sure this version will be clearly separated from the compo version like I did in previous LDs. ^^
Also special thanks to @smurf @denifia @gaming-night for giving the best comments ever haha.
The gameplay ties in nicely with the setting, although I didn't feel the difference between sacrificing a sheep and leaving it behind was really palpable. I understood the reference to the theme, but it felt a bit tacked on.
The apple mechanics I think may have worked a bit better if you used it to lure the sheep in instead of shooing them away, since it was tricky to get the herd to stick together. Maybe a free "shoo" command and a limited "lure" command (with collecting apples) may have been a better choice. Using the apple to lure would also be the more logical expectation, unless it's meant to replenish the herders' energy.
The music is nice, but unfortunately you chose "musical" step noises which created a second melody that grated a bit against the main song. Lowering the volume of the steps, randomizing their notes and using a more inconspicuous sound effects may have alleviated this a bit.
I managed to save one sheep but probably won't make it through the winter. :(
Nice game overall with outstanding visuals.
I was really proud of myself for saving 2 sheep...
### Hey guys I'm doing an AMA regarding my LD entry, gamedev or artistic work in general. Please fill in this [Google form](https://goo.gl/forms/Ad6ZOAzhmX2DJPwg1). Thank you all for playing my game
I like the concept and the gameplay, and the graphics are amazing. I had a few playthroughs of this and it was a good balance of frustration and challenge! the sheep move in a predictable but variable way which means you inevitably end up either losing a few or chasing them back on track which is really good and stops it just being a maths equation to sacrifice X amount.
comments for improvement would only be that less repetitive BGM would be good and also a few times i had collision problems with the sheep and the bushes, but these were very minor.
One of the best ive played from the whole jam! :)

You can just walk through the barn and past where the terrain ends, where gravity literally has no effect. Confirmed: Farmer is a ghost.
But honestly, this game was one of the prettiest 3d games I've ever seen for a Ludum Dare, and it was done within 48 hours? Wow!
The cartoon style graphics was excellent, the game was very good, the sound was very good and overall it was a very good game. Well done.
