Reso Crawler by ShockWire

[raw]
made by ShockWire for LD 42 (COMPO)

The game where your health is the screen resolution! Crawl through a randomly generated dungeon, collecting weapons and fighting monsters on your way to explore every nook and cranny. Be careful: every hit you take reduces the screen's resolution, and before you know it you'll die blind as a bat!

Playable on computers with a monitor resolution of AT LEAST 800x800. ResoCrawler4.gif

CONTROLS!

WASD/Arrow Keys ---> Movement

Space ---> Shoot/Open Chest/Interact

Q/E ---> Switch Weapons

GAMEPLAY

The goal of the game is to go through various dungeons. You can beat each dungeon by simply finding and opening all locked doors. However, you only begin with 3 keys, so you must find the rest keys scattered among chests in different rooms. Guarding these chests are enemies called the Jellycrabs, which will lunge towards you if you get too close. Every time they hit you, the screen's window will shrink causing limited visibility. Fortunately, chests may also contain healing potions (increasing window size), increased damage potions, and most importantly weapons to fight with. Explore as many dungeons as you can before you get killed!ResoCrawler.png

Idea with screen resolution really unique!
But I cant understand how to open chest, I just move around and it open) And enamies usually teloporting, not moving.

I like the idea of the shrinking screen but the game itself is hard to play. Enemy movement is inconsistent and i could only open chests a couple times.

Really innovative with the screen size changing mechanic, but the one problem I have is that the controls are not the best, especially with opening chest. Great game otherwise, though!

Ok, I admit that I didn't read the instructions, and when my window shrunk I was extremely confused and thought I was going crazy. Then it quickly became apparent that it was a game mechanic. Really clever! I love it! I found that fighting the jelly crabs was a little frustrating because they were able to jump so quickly. I also noticed that it looked like the dungeon layouts might have been procedural? If so, major kudos getting a procedural system working in a game jam!

Very interesting mechanic and well done too. I think it might have been too easy though. As long as I kept moving, the enemies didn't really seem to hit me. Overall, great job here!

This game is a great concept that I think needs a bit more polish to really shine. You've got a solid working gameplay loop (unlock doors and chests while not dying to proceed), but I think starting with any weapon, even a weak one would go a long way to make the game more instantly engaging. I spent almost the entire first level without a weapon. I think with a little more enemy variety and a little progression adjusting though, you could have something really great! Nice work!

The window size changing is a really great idea :)

Sometimes it takes a while to get a weapon. The enemy movement seems a tad buggy, sometimes they jump out of the walkable tiles.
Well done!

Definitely a cool idea; I liked the shrinking window as the player gets hit! (Though I'll admit, as others have said, the controls were a bit tough) I think I got through 4-5 dungeons.

Thanks for a fun game!
