malloc() by NULLandKale

[raw]
made by NULLandKale for LD 42 (JAM)

Its 8 am you wake up and turn your PC on for a few games only to see green characters appear on the screen.

malloc() has struck, your precious hard drive space is gone replaced with enemies to fight.

You only have one recourse now, defeat malloc() and fight for your bytes, or admit defeat.

Luckily you have prepared for this day and have CodeBlocks hidden in your bytes to help you.

Kill enemies, Gather CodeBlocks, and defeat malloc().

TLDR: malloc() is a top-down shooter with an upgrade system, get more upgrades to be more powerful.

I'm at work and can only check out the videos right now... please tell me the gun on the player is autofiring lol! I hate playing games where you have to click to shoot when you just want to hold down the mouse button :P

It sounds like the mouse click sound plays every time the gun shoots though (it sounds like the enemies do a similar thing with mechanical keyboard sounds). I really like that. Definitely makes you feel more hackerish lol

Speaking of hackerish, it'd be fun to see some more unique areas where you have to go through things that people actually go through to fix an malloc() error. (maybe there's more in game... I'll check once I get back this evening)

From the video it looks kinda fun, but could use some more story / theme elements. It seems playable though... not bad for just a weekend of effort :)

I like the text effect you did at the end when the player dies... that was cool :) definitely increased the level of frustration you feel at malloc() lol

Nice game, though I have 2 main critiques. Firstly, the shooting sound feels kinda weak. I get it's supposed to be a mouse clicking, and I think that's a really clever way to incorporate the whole theme you're going for. But in terms of game feel, it makes the gun feel weak. Secondly, the map is really big, and with how closely zoomed into the player you are it makes it kinda hard to navigate. That all being said, still, good work!

A functional game, only irritated me was the sound of the shot.

And there is a bug that when you die, you come back with the power acquired, I died with enemies exploding on dead and I respawn with him active.

Pretty cool game, some nice features like all the modifiers and the arrow towards closest enemy. I did get lost thou and couldn't find the last ~15 ish. Wouldn't mind to have some kind of "anti circle-strafing enemy" :) Good job

I loved the upgrade system. The game is fluid and I liked the feeling of the upgrades made me more powerful as the game progress. But after defeat all enemies, nothing happens. This is normal? I didn't realize how some upgrades really work. Whatever, the game is very fun. Congratulations.

Good game fun mechanics. Very good progression. At the beginning it felt difficult to kill one dude but later on I was killing them in bulk. I think additional enemy types and maybe a final boss could really add to the game and make it feel a little less grindy.

@nullandkale I didn't get the win screen either.

I really enjoyed the upgrade system and the shooter mechanics were well done. I felt like the level was a bit larger than was necessary and the last few enemies were a chore to fight. I also feel like more variety in the enemies would have been a nice addition. Many of the upgrades didn't seem to do much but maybe it was just because I was focused on running around shooting things.

Overall a fun game, thanks for sharing.
