I am Tree by SundanceKid

[raw]
made by SundanceKid for LD 41 (COMPO)

This is my take on the theme: a calm, relaxing naturey builder and at the same time an exciting, fast paced action game where you play as a tree. Defend yourself against lumberjacks and woodpeckers as you collect rain to grow your tree and gain more health. The goal is to live as long as possible.

Controls:

Build - Right Click

Throw Apple - Space

A thrown apple will go towards your mouse position. The further your mouse the harder the apple will be thrown. To build onto your tree you need at least 100 nutrients, which is gathered when raindrops hit your leaves.

Made with Unity, written in c#, art done in GIMP, music and audio recorded with Audacity and some with Bfxr.

My favorite game so far! I loved the surprises around every corner. I won't spoil em' for anyone else though.

Struggled a bit at the start to even grow, but once I got the hang of it I enjoyed every minute. This is an amazing game!

It started well, then I made some bad decisions and I died, fun game.

Interesting. Took me a few attempts to actually figure out how to play and I was handicapped by the fact that I couldn't see the whole screen at the same time thanks to my crappy screen resolution. But, none the less, I had fun once I figured out what I was doing!

Ok, I'm really bad. It took me 5 time to figure out how aiming works. But I got it then and it was fun.

Good job!

Great game, lots of fun! I feel like it doesn't fit the theme very well though. Also, the lightning strike before the rain is a bit loud gave me a good spook ;). Other than that good job!

I really liked this but I think you have a bug - I got to around almost as high as the screen and had a lot of health. I fended off someone with a drill and still had a lot of health then out of nowhere the screen just popped up and said I died. By the way I laughed out loud at the 5000 years old thing - classic.

@jack-hipson thanks for the feedback! I struggled with the theme at first, but I think the combination of a relaxing building game with a fast-paced action game fits the theme alright. :)

@morphine I'll look into it but one thing I should have mentioned is that lumberjacks (and drills especially) can take away a lot of your health in a short amount of time. Maybe a warning sound when you get to low health would be helpful. Thanks a lot for the feedback. :)

You did an amazing job here! definitely one of my favorites, I found myself playing this one for quite a while. My one criticism is that you could have done the theme a bit better, as the combination of builder and action isn't that "incompatible". Still! excellent entry, you're in my top 5 :D.

Very well done. I found it incredibly satisfying and funny to mercilessly murder lumberjacks with an apple.

Didn't realize I could build sideways until I got pretty tall, but that was pretty cool. The mechanics encouraged you to build like an actual tree. The drill instantly got me... death screen was amazing though.

I love that you throw apples to kill humans. The message at the end of a run was neat!

Now that I think about it this tree is evil. It's not only killing humans, is feeding on their bodies!!

GG Keep up the great work!

Survived a solid 4 minutes 40 once I worked out what to do! simple concept but quite satisfying

Fun idea, good realisation - good job!
Just one thing : why a screen so large and wide ? It was not very easy to play with only the center of the game ^_^

I found the game and the music really relaxing. Took me a while to understand the aiming mechanism though (but maybe it's just me). Really fun game to play. Good job!

@lereveur Sorry about the resolution, I have a pretty big monitor and didn't notice. Easy fix with itch.io :) Thanks for the feedback.

Quite a funny game, great execution of mixing anxiety and relaxation. My 3 minutes felt like 10 because of how hostile everything was. I must say that the leaf blocks apples would fire from seemed a bit random. Good job on crafting a solid entry.

i think the only thing stopping me progress is how do i deal with fire

@tikikala unfortunately fire is the only thing in the game you don't have control over, but usually fires will go out pretty quickly. :)

A very unique take on the theme, I love it! The game is quite challenging, it took me a lot of tries before being able to grow a very large tree. The fire is annoying, but the chainsaw machine are even more deadly!

I love the humor of the game too. Congrats on this relaxing yet challenging entry!
