EMMA by SandBloom

[raw]
made by SandBloom for LD 41 (COMPO)

This is EMMA, a dungeon-crawler platformer with poetic and narrative elements. EMMA wants to be a journey that will make the player think and test his skills in a series of tricky levels.

EMMA is primarily an Android game. So if you play on computer, brace yourselves for confusing input.

That is a really cool idea. the disappearing floor and narration completely change the feel compared to regular platforming.

I didn't have a chance to play on Android, so my points are only for PC.

This is very hard to control as I didn't really understood what is going on. The game somewhat controls itself on PC. After winning (or dying - I have no idea what happened?) character didn't spawn again at all. Although these might be connected to me actually trying on PC.

Visual style is good, so is music.

Congratulations on making the game!

If it was on Google play I would try the Android version, this way I only tried the PC one.

The controls on PC were terrible, but you said they would :D It was not clear for a while what is the goal - where should I get to. The game could overall build up the difficulty gradually, I felt the timings were relatively tight from the beginning. The way how she runs and I cannot change the direction was frustrating to me.

@sirthomas It's not that you're bad, it's that is extremely hard. Too much, we didn't have time to balance that very well.
@zgragselus we weren't aware of the not spawning situation.
@Pavel Smejkal it was a design decision to make them run automatically (and not change direction) so the controls weren't overwhelming on Android. But we had some debate over that point.

And thank you all for the kind words!

PD. World one is possible but very hard. World Two is literally impossible :s

Great entry and concept! I think it would be great have a list of controls or mechanics before start playing from the beggining to have a better experience for the user. I love the graphics and the music fits really well.

This game is great ! Seriously this is the kind of game / concept I would pay for on steam ! You did an amazing job ! Great marks and every category ! Bravo !

I don't know if this come from the PC version, but there is still somme bugs :
- random green text appearing sometimes
- lock to the level 2-0 with no possible end ?

@ferrandu91 Yeah, we're a little rough on tutorials and teaching how to play. Thanks!
@Olivier Millochau Thanks a lot man! We're glad you like it. Yeah, for those bugs we are aware but we saw them when it was too late. If you ever would be interested in a version with better control, less bugs and where you can actually finish it, visit the gamejolt page! gamejolt.com/games/EMMA/335756

A neat game. Wish I was better at platforming... And on level 0-2 I feen like there is a problem with portion of level not being onscreen...

After getting used to the controls, this game played easily and was fun. The only issue I had was that it was hard to read the text on the background, especially while focusing on the platforming.

Very nice graphics and very unpleasant control.
Tried to play on the PC and on the mobile, overcame two levels, very cruel game.

as advertised PC controls are a bit difficult which made playing the levels hard, nice art style, lovely music.
Well done!

@Hilvon it's not that it's offscreen, it's that the trigger to go to another level is missing on that level. The issue is resolved in the post jam release.
@Tay Elenberg not only is the control unresponsive, the input is weird. We always have the problem to not having time to make the game more intuitive and less difficult.
Thanks everyone :D

I'm not sure if you were able to see it, but I played your game on my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames tonight.

This game is very pretty and sounds great. I initially had trouble trying to figure it out (partially my fault for not looking at the controls), but even after I figured it out the game was incredibly difficult. There were spots where it seemed like I was making the jump at the same time, but got different results. I also had difficulty distinguishing background from foreground in places. The mechanic of the ground disappearing once you touch it is great, and not something I've really seen before (unless you count falling platforms).

Controls are a bit hard but the overall idea is nice.
