Running Out Of Space by AdmiralSpaceKraken

[raw]
made by AdmiralSpaceKraken for LD 42 (COMPO)

This was my first game jam and I made a platformer where you are trying to survive as long as possible while blocks and coins are falling down from the sky.

Programs used to make this:
-Unity

Not a bad take on the theme! Slightly buggy, but pretty good considering this is your first game jam.
Some thoughts: Maybe have it be less random? When you're on a lower platform, it's sometimes hard to recover and you gotta pray for RNG. Maybe have the randomness be weighted towards the columns with lower heights? Great job nevertheless!

This game is fun and the audio is nice. As a platformer, I found jumping is somewhat difficult to control. Overall, a good start on LD!

Very nice. Nothing groundbreaking innovative, but well presented. The music is a nice touch.
The controls feel a bit too floaty for my taste.

Well done. There are a few slight issues:
- The boxes often don't line up, which means you can be caught on the corner of a box when trying to move horizontally; this just feels a little weird.
- It's possible to be completely trapped -- my third run through, a giant wall got built up in the middle almost immediately, and then when trying to get out of one hole another one formed right where I jumped, so I was screwed no matter what. It might help to have some kind of logic that won't form a hole immediately where the player is -- that is, it could place the first two blocks, but then wait to place the third block until the player has had a chance to escape.

Overall, though, everything works and the multiplicity of both hazards and scoring methods make the game a little more interesting.

A little bugs here and there but it is surprisingly fun and addictive, it could be a bit less random by leveling out the crates like @undefinist said, so that the lava can be a bigger part because the bit was really fun.

Hey! Very cool game for your first game jam. Simple but very addictive.

Like others said, there's some issues with collisions and sometimes I can't walk 'cause I get stuck between 2 boxes. Also I've got a run when I get trapped as @themonsterfromthedeep said.

Hope you continue this little concept. Good job ! :)

Simple but efficient concept, here are some thought:
* The movement is a little "sloppy", maybe use Input.GetAxisRaw method in your PlayerDirector.cs script, this should makes the control snappier
* Being able to jump over two boxes high only is a bit frustrating as a wall of three boxes will often build very quickly somewhere, trapping you in a corner of the level.
* Having some item dropping like coins, to jump higher or destroy blocks, could diversify the gameplay (but I know there is little time in a jam)

Anyway, keep up the good job :)

A nice little fun game, good job on completing it. I especially like the music, very simple but effective. I gave up making music in my game because I cant come up with something that is simple yet effective like yours. In term of improvement, I think the movement has too much momentum for my taste, leading to unresponsive feedback: the character doesnt move right when I press the button but takes some time to accelerate. Also you should detect whenever the character gets stuck and reset the level so player doesnt have to wait to be killed, like here:

Another way to fix this is to have the box spawner less random, because now it creates a lot of spikes and you cant really get through them

I really like youre game, but I think it would be nicer to only have one score and not the 3 different scores. And the scores should be much, much bigger.

okay, this mechanic was a lot of fun but I've seen it used earlier before so it's nothing new to me. The graphics were plain ugly, no shading, audio was pretty generic too. Nothing spectacular, but... good job on finishing your first game jam game I guess?
