Abalite Crystal Defender by Ryfi

[raw]
made by Ryfi for LD 42 (JAM)

You must place turrets and walls to stop the flying enemy tanks from destroying the rare Abalite Crystal at the back of your cave. Once a turret/wall is destroyed, you can't place another turret in that place. See how long you can last!

Interesting concept. Reminds me of the Sanctum games.

Despite the fact that I'm not a fan of FPS games, I do like the concept behind this game and I did find it pretty fun. The place filling up with your own debris definitely fits the bill of running out of space.

Oddly couldn't get the web version of the game to run. The windows version seems to be missing files.

I kept getting these huge ~2sec stutters every time a tank spawns, which makes it really hard to play.

Threadripper 1950x / GTX 1070 / win10 / Chrome if it helps.

@darkguardsman Im sorry to hear that the game didn't work. The problem may be that you need to install Unity webgl extension into your browser. The windows version might not work at all, but try the web version again. Google Chrome is the best way.

@fireslash the game is pretty heavy on some computers. The best way to solve this is to have it be the only thing running on the computer. Could you try to download it? Doing that may also help reduce lag.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297110828 Live streamed playing this earlier - just before the last game I play, I like the game but wish it had sound. However it had some really nice graphical elements, and followed the theme well, seemed quite ambitious in scope.

@drnoir Thanks for streaming out game! We were going to add sounds, but unfortunately we ran out of time. In retrospect, we may have bitten off a little more than we could chew with the scope of the game, but it was definitely an enjoyable experience all the same.

Gave it a second try and got it to run. Think the issue was with my graphics settings in chrome. Normally I have chrome set to not use my GPU has it bugs out. I switch over to my backup copy of chrome with default settings and it worked. Still very laggy to play in web, would love if you could package up a windows copy so I can give it a proper test. To make a windows build in unity make sure to include all generated files. Feel free to use this script I used for exporting my game https://github.com/DarkGuardsman/Space-is-running-out-of-space/blob/LDJAM42/UnityProject/Assets/Editor/MakeBuilds.cs

Wow this was not what i expected. There are clearly some bugs in the game and the lack of sound and music is a bit of a show stopper but this game sure haves huge potential.

Feels a bit like Dungeon Defenders with tanks.

Awesome job to accomplish this is such a short timespan !

@roidz yeah, I hope you enjoyed the game! Sounds were last on our list of things to do because we're not really sound designers and both of us were absent for the last 12 hrs of the jam. There was a plan to add sound, however time was not on our side

This is extremely ambitious for an LD! Mind blown when I dropped into that first person perspective.

The concept with the theme and the RTS style building with FPS mechanics are desperately needed in gaming these days, but yours seemed too easy and with no real challenge. I felt like nothing was happening to a lot of the time. Unfortunately, I had to rate this game with huge potential so low.

Interesting concept of FPS + TD

@devio If you keep playing the waves get progressively harder. There are 20 in the game and I've never made it past 9.

Overall the game was really well made. The combination of tower defence and FPS was really well done. However, the game was quite laggy (maybe just my bad computer) and after round 2 had ended, the game restarted. Despite this, it was still a really fun game.

I like shooting those tanks. I was slightly confused by the map at first though.

I wasn't expecting there to be any FPS elements at first when I saw the initial map/screen, but that was really cool. Once I got past the lag spikes (which seem to happen as the tanks get spawned) it worked find, and was pretty fun. Interesting mechanics overall, good job!

Loved the FPS/Tower defense hybrid style. I didn't play for long but i think there is potential. There were some bugs with collision and for the player, and it was a shame there was no sound. For a LD game though? Really impressive graphics and solid gameplay for only 2-3 days creation.

@sarah I believe that the lag spikes are specific to the web version. Unfortunately, the windows build is missing textures. I believe that Ryfi is working on it though.
