GRANDMA KNIGHT by manusaiz
Slay some Bearballs for dinner before returning home. Time passes inexorabily.
Silver knightress. In memory of my granda, the greatest fighter I've ever known. She worked hard as a butcher's pawn in times of spanish civil war. She made of our family the happy bunch we're today. This game is for her, but I hope you can enjoy it as well. If so, let me know in the comments bellow.

i realy like the art of your game
@tednesday , @missalpha , @sloyd ,
Link should work now, I invite you to retry and hunt some bearballs :yum:
@pabricka ok, added a "Held meat" meter so we can know how many meat gramma is carrying on her.
@dimlyorchid Wow thanks for the extensive feedback!
· Added a mark on the floor indicating to deliver the meat there.
I want to clarify the meat UI a bit more, probably add a meat-box icon in the UI. We'll see.
@o2o , @cranestyle , @randdir , Improved the movement. Yessss! It should work flawlessly now.
Keep it up !
Alos, the player animation is funny :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
But I don't like control.Trees always stuck me
Bugs:
-Meat text display does not work correctly (I thought it might've been tied to the narrative, but it doesn't work when she is healthy either)
-Map doesn't accurately reflect terrain (Not sure if that's part of the narrative too, but it was on her 2nd or 3rd part).
-Got stuck on trees a lot, especially in tight spaces
Feedback:
-The artwork was cute. Especially the bears!
-I wasn't sure where to go after hunting all the bears, initially. Partly because the meat counter did not work. I went back to the house door initially, but turns out I needed to go to the shed.
-The level with all the bears at the end is a bit weird. Why are there so many bears near the house? Were you trying to avoid making it tedious (because the character is so slow?) Personally I think it would've felt more balanced if you reduced the meat requirement instead of increasing it.
-Memory map: would be a bit more useful if it showed your current location for the first 1-2 levels, but not a big deal.
-To be honest I almost wanted to stop playing because I didn't want to be hit with a sad story.
-The story, and overall concept was good and well executed. You could really feel the story through the progression of the levels.
@c0nst4ntin Thank you! this was mainly Lau's doing :)
@iokin Hey, dunno how to export from GMS to Linux, sorry.
@naemis Yeah, I think it would have been too rough to go down that path. Life does that. We hoped that implying the possibility before the ending made the job.
@the-triumvirate Thanks for standing for the innocent trees! Actually, the complains were legit, there was a small bug with the movement, we fixed it by the time you played. So glad you liked the game :)
@ghostgoatsgames)Wow. Thank you very much for your kind words, we are beyond happy we reached you guys.
@zozol Yep tediousness was the deal. Hope it wasn't too harsh. Well my gramma was the protagonist of the story. I always try to make games thare are better than life :v:
@s-knight Thanks for yur kind words! Yeah we first made it all look red, but it was too harsh, then I draw it black, and finally blurred the minimap as days went by. You probably played the version in the middle :yum: And thanks.
@borys Hey bear one! yeah the point was not to offer a skill-challenging game, but a moving story through the mechanics. I needed some tediousness to connect with the pain. Thanks for the praise!
@nick-shooter Thanks, Lau made the art. The gameplay was absolutely intendedly tedious, hope not too much. Some say it was at spot, some too tedious, not sure how less tedious we should have made it to yet transmit the feeling, hard topic :tea:
I am sorry about the bearballs being cute, but serrano jam is delicious and pigs are beautiful and tender, think it's just fair.
@timbelion, @5spectra My gramma loved to travel, and we used anything as an excuse to take us on a trip.
As my gramma grew older she was more confined to her neibourhood as her legs failed her and she started to fall to the ground and get hurt. It was painful to know that could happen anytime... and it started happening more often every time. It's sad because I remember how she went to the grocery store when I was a small kid, and she could carry literally dozens of bags, it was amazing, I recall I told her she looked like a graceful female american football player. Anyhow, as the time went by, she started fearing going out of her house, then she started staying on her favourite coach. You get the correlation by this point. Thanks for asking!
edit: oh I mentioned she used to wear shoulderpads on her outfits, which was hilariously unnecesary because she wasn't very tall.
Making levels shorter was a good way of balancing the gameplay as it got more frustrating, but some of them still felt too boring to me. I also sort of wish that the bears.
I didn't encounter any bugs or confusing playing it.
I liked how even the character getting slower and weaker the game did not slow down.
I don't know if the game fits well in the theme of this LD. The physical ability to see the world of the character is represented by the world getting smaller, but I didn't feel I'm "running out of space" but rather "running out of abilities".
You really love your grandma.
@quicklyer Thanks, glad we made a connection there. THANKS!
@enot487 Thank you, bearballs are pretty much cute meat balls animals. It wasn't first priority that they attacked, but I had it in mind, suposedly going to attack only while in 2vs1 a 50% of the time and 100% chance of ballbear attack when they're 3vs1 or more. Also we were including a shield and a life system. But as it wasn't a priority we had to cut somewhere. I'm happy I cut that and not the other aspects tho :yum:
You did well by making the world smaller as the character became older and slower.
I also liked the music.
Why did the forest have to be all maze-like? Maybe it fits the memory-thing and her ability to find her way back home, but still I do not like the pathfinding part.
Altogether it is a nice entry and I enjoyed playing it! Thank you.
@randytayler Thanks! I will mess around with the speeds and see if I can get it right.
@GreenAndSubmarine Thanks, I agree with the minimap needing to show player's position.
@zoltancoccyx haha, I'm glad we managed to move another soul. Hope you did enjoy the experience.
