RTHM by fashionbatman
RTHM
A rhythm dating sim.
https://fashionbatman.itch.io/rthm
Controls:
Space = Hit Hearts
Arrow Keys/WASD = Hit Squares
Hit the arrow keys on the squares to swipe through people and text emojis
Hit the space bar on the hearts to play some nice notes
Rules:
Send any text you feel like, the responses to them are random. I would have liked to have done something more involved, but I ran out of time.
Whether you get a date or they disconnect depends on points. +3 for a date and -3 for a disconnect.
A smiley face response gives you +1, a frowny face gives you 0, and an angry face gives you -1.
Good luck finding love!

@gemberkoekje haha I was kind of going for that with it being 2 incompatible genres. I definitely want to expand on the music a bunch though.
That being said, I'm not used to rhythm games so there was a bit much for me to follow on the screen all the time. Feels like a game I can get better at though so there's a temptation to come back for more later. It certainly feels like something I can get into a kind of flow with once I'm used to it.
Edit: On a later playthrough it's manageable and surprisingly engaging. I don't know what the logic is in the background but it feels like it's responding to the direction I choose.
Fits the theme very well, and it's fun. Good work with the art and music.
The only complain I would have is that there is some input lag that can be frustrating.
Unfortunately, my musical prowess does not support my dating prowess as much as I feel it should.
Swipe down.
I really enjoyed the experience ^^ Keep coding :)
Don't know how but got a date on first try by simply putting whatever "down" is, and hearts.
A downside is that for the "note" to be successfully pressed, is to press the key when the heart/square is on the right of the "button"(?).
your input issues are definitely not how its supposed to work I'll look into it. Thanks!
Thanks for the game!
:eggplant:
good music, beat and sound!
It took me FOREVER to finally get someone to go on a date with me! I wish there was some kind of feedback on which emoji I should be choosing. I couldn't figure out if each person liked a certain one or if it was a 25% chance each time to get one they liked and I just had the worst luck ever.
Super cute and very fun! Great job!
Also I love it. I love everything about it. Extra cute, really fun to play, can't fault the OP-1 pick there, it feels very wholesome and I love it.
I its a fun game, but I dont know how to play. The rythm is to high for me, I think that if you put it slower it could be more fun!
I'm really bad at the game, but the game itself is really good!
Good job :)
I’d love for you to review my submission as well.

Are you supposed to match what she asks when hitting the arrow keys ? I wasn't sure of what I was doing when I saw she was getting angry x)
By the way, you can completely cheat at this game by pressing Space all the time (all the hearts are played) and do the same for direction way before you are supposed to hit the square ;)
Overall, nice game! Fun, simple but effective, and the music is nice. Congrats!
Good job 5 Stars!
here's my game if you want to check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/yum-some
Full marks on audio especially.
I love a well-timed rhythm game! The added notes on top of the backing track gave it a really bouncy, fun feel. I thought the four emoji choices were hilarious as well.
I think this game could benefit from a score counter, or a more obvious objective. I didn't know which direction I was supposed to press when I could send emojis, so I just sort of guessed random ones until I won.
Other than that though, great game!
A couple thoughts, I think having the hearts pulse as they come to the center make it harder to tell whether you've made a hit or not, it feels like a little too much visual feedback. I think that animation would best be used if it's a hit to make hitting the note feel more impactful.
Also, I have a hard time focusing on the top half of the screen with my attention sucked to the bottom and keeping up with the notes, so I felt like I wasn't able to focus on what was happening on the top half of the screen.
I love that hitting the notes completes the song, even without a score I was incentivised to do better to hear more of the song and that works well.
Great work!
Nice work, well done! I enjoyed this.

Would be cool if the emoji selection meant something (it doesn't, right?), that would really add another element to the game.
I couldn't get anyone to like me sadly. Also I had some issues with the timing, maybe allowing late likes would be help a bit more.
Good job!
It was quite difficult becaues it was hard to press spacebar at the correct time but I am also quite bad at rhytm games so it might just be that. Having a way to select difficulty would be nice though or maybe have the difficulty be lower in the beginning and get harder with time.
The art and music by itself was very good though. Glad I got around to play this game.
Music fit well with the rythm of the game and that is ver hard to do xD
It's kindly difficult to hit hearts if the are so close (sometimes)
I like how you mix this 2 genres, good job!
The music is a bit to arythmic for me to succeed, but that's probably just me. Very nice twist on the the theme!
Great execution.
Sometimes you don't know exactly what to do, but in this case it's not so bad.
I would have liked to have seen more detailed artwork.
Great, keep it up!!
Would love to see this expanded upon.
- cute charming aesthetic and music
- great idea that has lot of potential, you should keep developing it!
### :thought_balloon: feedback
- I was stuck on a conversation with someone for 5 minutes and it didn't seem to be going anywhere. Maybe I'm just the right amount of bad at rhythm games to not fail or succeed.
Didn't like the music thou, it feels like it's unpredictable instead of just hard. You should be able to score by following the music, with the graphics only to give an extra help.
Also, making the chat choices meaningful is exactly the missing piece. But you did a great job in the given time!
Hope you'll expand it!
PS: Love the OP-1 sounds :)
PPS: I'd be happy if you also try out our games: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/good-hamster-dead-hamster and https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/tanktris
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.

and focus on coming note made me forgot to see on the phone's screen.
:')
Naturally, it reminds of Tindr, but I'm guessing that's the part that you didn't have enough time to finish?
Still, I enjoyed playing it. The aesthetics have a funny take and the music is cool as well, even if kinda wierd ;)
Well, if you have time, please, take a look at my entry at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/last-stand
There should probably be a way to have better odds to succeed.
