RTHM by fashionbatman

RTHM

A rhythm dating sim.

https://fashionbatman.itch.io/rthm

Controls:

Space = Hit Hearts

Arrow Keys/WASD = Hit Squares

Hit the arrow keys on the squares to swipe through people and text emojis

Hit the space bar on the hearts to play some nice notes

Rules:

Send any text you feel like, the responses to them are random. I would have liked to have done something more involved, but I ran out of time.

Whether you get a date or they disconnect depends on points. +3 for a date and -3 for a disconnect.

A smiley face response gives you +1, a frowny face gives you 0, and an angry face gives you -1.

Good luck finding love!

This is good - fun and clever. Rhythm Tinder? Took me a minute to figure out what I was doing but yeah, that's hilarious. The eggplants!

When you get **the idea**, the game become fun to play. Nice theme realisation and overall work. My main issue is that frame rate drop to 20-25 for no reason. Double check code, maybe it's a browser problem, maybe something else (I played on Chrome).

I'm so confused (But I never understood Tinder anyway) and I felt like the rhythm was a bit too fast to also look at the screen and see how your date is doing. So maybe for a post-compo version let the player choose the song so he can go for a nice smooth slow ballad :)

@Dumivid Thanks for the tip! I haven't come across that issue yet in my play testing, but I'll keep digging around.

@gemberkoekje haha I was kind of going for that with it being 2 incompatible genres. I definitely want to expand on the music a bunch though.

Really interesting, great idea "matching" (see what I did there) dating and rhythm. I'd love to see more cohesion between the two halves, perhaps emojis from your date's messages will become the next notes? Anyway I love how the game generates its own soundtrack, really the best part. All in all I enjoyed playing it, good job!

That was fun and I think it's a great idea. The sound and graphics both complement the game well, it's all really hectic.

That being said, I'm not used to rhythm games so there was a bit much for me to follow on the screen all the time. Feels like a game I can get better at though so there's a temptation to come back for more later. It certainly feels like something I can get into a kind of flow with once I'm used to it.

Edit: On a later playthrough it's manageable and surprisingly engaging. I don't know what the logic is in the background but it feels like it's responding to the direction I choose.

I finally got a date, yeah ! I had no idea of what I was suppose to do at first but the game is pretty intuitive and we don't need more than the basic controls, so thumbs up for this.

The only complain I would have is that there is some input lag that can be frustrating.

Sadly every play through they disconnected from me! Bit hard at the start to get a hang of the controls, but after that provides an enjoyable experience.

really funny and nicely done.
Don't know how but got a date on first try by simply putting whatever "down" is, and hearts.
A downside is that for the "note" to be successfully pressed, is to press the key when the heart/square is on the right of the "button"(?).

What a cute game!!! It's the first rhythm game where I really enjoyed the music. Great choice to go with chiptunes and pixel graphics!

It took me FOREVER to finally get someone to go on a date with me! I wish there was some kind of feedback on which emoji I should be choosing. I couldn't figure out if each person liked a certain one or if it was a 25% chance each time to get one they liked and I just had the worst luck ever.

Super cute and very fun! Great job!

It's pretty fun but a little hard for me, I missed most of the hearts :D An other think that bothered me a bit was that the 'tunes I played' were off sync with the music. It's not that big of a deal, but it would be a nice touch if it was in sync.

Fun game! My only complain would be that I never knew what I was supposed to send to my date, but hey, still got a date everytime! ^^

By the way, you can completely cheat at this game by pressing Space all the time (all the hearts are played) and do the same for direction way before you are supposed to hit the square ;)

Overall, nice game! Fun, simple but effective, and the music is nice. Congrats!

Clever entry.

I love a well-timed rhythm game! The added notes on top of the backing track gave it a really bouncy, fun feel. I thought the four emoji choices were hilarious as well.

I think this game could benefit from a score counter, or a more obvious objective. I didn't know which direction I was supposed to press when I could send emojis, so I just sort of guessed random ones until I won.

Other than that though, great game!

25. Apr 2018 · 22:40 UTC
The concept is really funny, and the music is so cute!

A couple thoughts, I think having the hearts pulse as they come to the center make it harder to tell whether you've made a hit or not, it feels like a little too much visual feedback. I think that animation would best be used if it's a hit to make hitting the note feel more impactful.

Also, I have a hard time focusing on the top half of the screen with my attention sucked to the bottom and keeping up with the notes, so I felt like I wasn't able to focus on what was happening on the top half of the screen.

I love that hitting the notes completes the song, even without a score I was incentivised to do better to hear more of the song and that works well.

Great work!

Cool entry, nice idea! Liked the song, though it was simple. Pity about the "hold down space" exploit, I would say that's a game breaker and you could probably get away with fixing it post submission?

Would be cool if the emoji selection meant something (it doesn't, right?), that would really add another element to the game.

The music was great! I think the game could benefit from lines that show where each beat is, or at least where each measure starts. Most of the melody is very off-beat, so it's hard to tell when exactly you should press with those notes.

Fun game and it becomes quite addictive. Had fun playing it!

It was quite difficult becaues it was hard to press spacebar at the correct time but I am also quite bad at rhytm games so it might just be that. Having a way to select difficulty would be nice though or maybe have the difficulty be lower in the beginning and get harder with time.

The art and music by itself was very good though. Glad I got around to play this game.

This game is pretty innovative and uses the theme interestingly. I like how fast paced and fun the gameplay was, even though it was pretty hard. I also liked the music in the game and thought the graphics were decent enough. I kind of wish that the hearts were not continuously pumping because, for some reason, it made it harder for me to press space when they were constantly pumping. I wish they just pumped when you pressed the space bar on them. I liked the game's humor, especially the references to the eggplant emoji in texts.

I got rejected by a girl named Gina after sending her a bunch of eggplant emojis, such realism! Lol jokes aside, this was one of the more amusing rhythm based games I've encountered. Awesome job! Graphics very simple, but everything comes together nicely. I'm a sucker for rhythm games and this was really fun and music is on point. Just wish there was some feedback to see what missing hearts/arrows affect. Did manage to snag 3 dates though, haha!

Would love to see this expanded upon.

### What I loved
- cute charming aesthetic and music
- great idea that has lot of potential, you should keep developing it!

### :thought_balloon: feedback
- I was stuck on a conversation with someone for 5 minutes and it didn't seem to be going anywhere. Maybe I'm just the right amount of bad at rhythm games to not fail or succeed.

Great game!!
Didn't like the music thou, it feels like it's unpredictable instead of just hard. You should be able to score by following the music, with the graphics only to give an extra help.
Also, making the chat choices meaningful is exactly the missing piece. But you did a great job in the given time!

Hope you'll expand it!

Really fun idea. I like the music, though it is very hard to hit the hearts sometimes. I try to keep on rhythm, but maybe the window for hitting spacebar could be opened up very slightly. Great concept though :) Fun stuff!

I love rhythm games, so I had to play it. I didn't read the instructions first and didn't get the idea, but on the second try I got it and really had fun "chatting". Rhythm patterns seemed a bit unpredictable to me, but I think I could get used to it after some time. Nice entry and theme match!

PS: Love the OP-1 sounds :)

Cool concept. At first I thought I needed to match the direction with whatever icon the date had until I realized the icons didn't match your ability set. I was trying to figure out some kind of mapping between face and what to do, like happy face -> respond with eggplant but I couldn't find a connection. On your game page I believe you do say you didn't get around to it and that's alright. I assume you were looking to do something along the lines of teasing out people's characteristics and how they like to talk and then matching it. It would be brilliant since the game is already a bit frantic trying to look up and down and get the mappings correct. Really interesting entry.

Simple and very current game. When I played I was without sound, and I believe that sound should be very fun, but congratulations to the game.

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

Neat concept. I just wish the outcomes didn't seem so random. I was actually able to get a date, but it just seemed to be random luck. The music seemed to really fit the game.

OK so this thing is totally awesome - dumb as hell but ain't that the point ^^# - I really LOVE the music, like fo real t works really well for me, the graphics are really simple but they work really well too - in terms of fameplay it's quite simple to win if you just bash the spacebar... which you may have figured - one way or another, it's the easiest way to enjoy the soundtrack which, again I'm really fond of... well done :-D

Hey! Good job! Congratulations on delivering the entry. I know what you mean of time running out, haha. I think you delivered a cool rhythm game, but the dating sim I can't say I really understood what was happening.

Naturally, it reminds of Tindr, but I'm guessing that's the part that you didn't have enough time to finish?

Still, I enjoyed playing it. The aesthetics have a funny take and the music is cool as well, even if kinda wierd ;)

Well, if you have time, please, take a look at my entry at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/last-stand

Fun take on the theme, but this game also taught me that no matter what I will get rejected forever. :(

There should probably be a way to have better odds to succeed.
