Hamster Habits by Rongo Matane
Father as many hamster babies as you can, while struggling daily to provide for your family, in your ever aging hamster body. Keep an eye on your power bar - you die if it is empty. Refill it by eating, but leave something for your children too!
If you have trouble picking up what to do: 1. Go to work and earn food 2. Ring the bell to call your children and eat something yourself 3. Go to bed and reproduce (don't make more than you can feed ;) ) 4. Eventually you run out of power, then you will see your life achievement

Please tell me how many hamsters you actually fathered (or if you encounter any bugs). My best was 80 so far!
We used * Libgdx wtih IntelliJ * Audacity and a big Micropphone * Skype for team communication :)

Good work! :)
The gameplay was a bit difficult and after some round repetitive (did I miss anything?).
It was not clear to me how to play the game at the beginning but I got it later. The graphics and the mood are great so I don't mind it getting repetitive later :)
Anyway, nice mood, graphics and sounds, and lovely intensely erotic hamster sex scene, what else could we ask for? The repetitiveness wasn't so annoying and actually reminded me of Cart Life
Maybe you could have added some more hints (left/right arrows below the Mr. Manpf's paws when he's using the wheel, highlighting items that should be used, etc.)
Congrats for this very good entry !
But I am apparently not a good hamster, I died when I was 5 and only had 5 children... I was wondering why they always pass by and end up being skeletons on the right hand side... until I realized I always ate their food completly so they had to starve... poor little ones :(
Great game, well done!
When playing in the browser and not fullscreen, I could not see the right paw for the wheel minigame, so I had no idea what to do.
The acceleration of the target in the mating minigame made it really enjoyable. It's those little things!
I liked how you have to let all your children eat before you take your part, and how your only goal is to give birth more of them, eventually killing yourself in the process.
I slowly became aware that in this life, all I was meant for was helping my specy to spread by slowly destroying myself.
I didn't understand instantly that they died because of me eating all the food, but I was explicit enough to get on the second try. Really good job, best game I played until now.
PS: I love the death screen.
I enjoy graphics and the minigames ^^
Good entry !
First attemp runned out power on first night【
- maybe some visual feedback when my character getting elder?
Interesting game, excellent graphics, excellent idea. I think making the hamster walk faster (or perhaps as a powerup?) would make the game more fun, he walks slow!
It will be a jar, executable in any java environment.
Edit: the jar is up, let me know if it works and how your friends like it. I'm also open to feature requests :D
Edit2: >maybe some visual feedback when my character getting elder? >>> yes, i thought about something similar. To keep the effort acceptable, i think an additional gauge would work right now.
I also ran into the bug mentioned by Laaph -- my guess is that pressing space immediately when or before morning hits performs an incorrect check and triggers the nighttime happytime action anyways. Funnily enough when I ran into the bug I was...erm...stuck. The minigame never ended and thus I was forced to go out in the only way that I could: using every once of my remaining power to shoot sperm into a sleeping hamster.
... never thought I'd find myself saying THAT sentence.
That you were intrigued to write this sentence validates all our efforts ;)
That it can be launched on Steam
Its really very fun
Loved the sound, graphics, gameplay etc
Keep It Up!
My real-life hamster ate its children. My in-game hamster starved. that's just a thought. Also art wise, why does the food look like hamster turds? why not make it green and more cylinder shaped or fresh veggies or something.... seriously it looks like feces. since its a humorous game I was surprised not to find actual feces.
The Wheel was not intuitive. you put up a space bar under the paw, like your telling us what to do, but that wasn't enough instruction. I had to read the comments to find out about the arrows keys. Then I got it to work but I couldn't get the timing down to get purple very often. I think purple was good. Hard to tell. if your gonna use 4 solid colors to indicate fullness or in this case "on-ness" why not use these colors in this order as charted by frequency since its intuitive. Green, Yellow, Orange, Red. Also a line on the hamster paw to indicate where purple was would have been helpful as I couldn't figure out where/when exactly you wanted me to hit the button.
With the sperm mechanic again some arrows would have been nice because the penis sprite being in all directions wasn't intuitive on the first play thru either. Could have used a water supply, since if you ever watched a hamster they do that pretty much all the time.
The Art saved this game and made it playable. The audio was actually quite good. Others found it annoying and repetitive but I for one thought real-life hamsters are far more annoying and repetitive, and had I made the game I wouldn't have done it with out an overly squeaky mouse-wheel and the sound of that darn water bottle ball clicking against the spout as they lap at it constantly.
My real-life hamsters name was MC Hamster and committed suicide by continuously climbing to the top of the cage and dropping himself. A few months prior he had escaped and lived fruitfully on his own for days in my folks house collecting cat food at night and stashing it in places that cats did not go. We found him nesting in the closet and put him back in his cage. After knowing a life of freedom he couldn't live in imprisonment and just snapped. Feel free to use that story in the sequel!
Great work guys, I still cant believe you all decided on the sex scene! lol
The feces are the feature i miss the most too. I planned on making you be able to poop in the litter corner, with physics based poop and fart sounds. I simply didn't finish it (the sex minigame was only started on monday evening). On a similar note, it's not a space bar under a bar, just a complete white texture because no one could make a proper one for the indicator in time.
I don't want to be too "on the nose" and like players to figure stuff out themselves, so i'm careful with any help i give. I'll be more considerate in a post-ld version...the main problem up until now was for people figuring out when to go where (the bell is always tested...).
The food is sun flower seeds: https://www.google.com/search?q=sunflower+seeds&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiesJSi9cLVAhXRY1AKHRJwD2MQ_AUICigB&biw=2294&bih=831
We actuall have a squeaky wheel sound, it just doesn't work well with the music i fear.
Thank you for your stories, i had a hamster too as a kid who also escaped and lived like 2 months behind some furniture, i can relate :D
Your comment is quite inspiring and i'll incorporate it into a post-ld version. Thank you!

The hamsters health is decreasing over time, as you have probably noticed - resulting on more eneryg loss on sperm shots and less energy gain from food. There is a cap though - and you have proven that the cap is too high, so thank you very much! I intended a progression to the point, where you kind of naturally die. It looks like ther should be no cap at all, seeing what i see now. Awesome :D
Perhaps like in life you start off naive and enthusiastic, (here I was lured in by the cute, funny art). Then half way through your life, you're left wondering the meaning of it all. But carry on out of habit, and the glimmer of hope to see something new.
I hated the drudging music at first, but I started to understand why. I thought it didn't fit the tone of the game at first, but then I realised it was my expectations which were wrong. It fit perfectly.
The artwork and animations added so much humour and character to the game, if anything they're the star here.
Criticisms? The only major one would be the restricted movement. You have to fight against it at first to find out where to go. Perhaps some kind of angle sliding would make it smoother?
I did love that as you age, you can't work as hard on the wheel as you did at first. But you're a lot more skilled at the minigame, so can end up earning more. Not sure if this was intentional, but it's a really nice parallel to real life.
After year 10 the futility of fighting against nature set in, so I decided to go out with a bang - literally
Incredible work. Never thought a short game could leave me feeling so strongly.
@rongo-matane Thank you very much. And since it is a jar, I can translate it into Chinese for my friends lol.
