The plot

Earth, year 2138. Humanity is running out of space. You have been designed to explore the universe and colonize at least 10 new planets for your glorious empire! Will you succeed? The fate of Humanity rests upon you.

How to play

The game has two phases :

  • First, when you are flying in space, you can use the WASD or the ZQSD or the ARROW keys to fly around. You can also use the SPACE key to shoot the asteroids passing by. To find other planets you must use your radar (green orbs around your ship shows both their direction and their distance to you). When trying to land on a planet, you must be careful not to go to fast and to have a good angle (watch out for warnings at the bottom of your screen) During your flight, you will consume your fuel and your spaceship's population will increase.

  • The second phase is on the planets. You can move using the first phase's controls When you land on a planet, you must plan carefully your moves : each moves will consume both food and population. On top of that, a city will be built behind you, you can't enter a town as it is too dense : each time you move you reduce the available space on the planet.

Nice touch that the planet transforms if you are good enough to get back to your ship :P. I like that you basically splitted the theme into two games that both have a connection to the theme. Well done!

As we're still about 2 hours in the Jam, I decided to address a slight balance issue: Food items on the planet now give back 250 food instead of 100.

Wow this game is hard! Couldn't colonize more than 3 planets (technically 4, but I died on it). Asteroids seem to be too fast to properly react to them. I constantly mashed space to get at least a bit safe. Food is a bit to scarce too but maybe I just wasted too much of it on planets. Population didn't really seem to matter.

I hope I don't sound too critical. I still enjoyed the game a lot! The graphics and music are nice. The idea is also pretty interesting. Will probably get to it again later.

@lamossus thank you a lot for the feedback! I've made a small patch while you were playing which made the game more playable (in my opinion) with the food which enables you to move a bit more around planets (and actually makes it possible to have the underpopulation ending)

@djibess thanks, the framework I used is really good for quick developpment and as my girlfriend took care of all the art and the music, I could just focus on the coding :)

Will try your game ^^

I really like this game! Nice graphics, and fun gameplay. The "exploration" of it really entertains me alot. I also like the different planets

Had a lot of laugh at my fails, good job!
What I really liked:
- two gameplays in one
- very good execution of the theme
- so many game over screens! :D
- it's really hard, to the point that it's funny

I didn't like much that I didn't know at first why I'm getting game over screens - I think game should explain itself to me a little bit better. Audio gets a bit repetitive after a while as well.

The idea was really good, the execution needs just some polish :)

Overall, nice job!

The gameover screen for the landed phase made me laugh :)

I really liked both gameplay aspects, the “Asteroid” game style I enjoyed a lot!

Randomness of each reset was a nice to see!

Took me an attempt or 2 to figure out where the map to find other planets was (Pretty obvious once you know) and slowing down in time to not crash into them.
No end game though? You just eventually run out of resources?

Great job anyway! Enjoyed the game.

@lukel you can unlock the victory screen if you are brave enough to colonize 10 planets ;)

Thank you a lot for playing ^^

An interesting concept.
Asteroids are a bit too random. Often got bumped out of the blue to game over. :(
The radar to planets is also sometimes misleading...

But maybe it was just me flying too fast.

The game was well done it just got kind of annoying when I couldn't land on a planet(perhaps the first one like you mentioned above) also I kept getting hit by asteroids as I was spawning, still a solid game and a solid effort!

The game was pretty interesting. Having sort of 2 games in 1 was very engaging in this case and represented the game's premise well.

I think the asteroids were a bit too random/fast. I ended up just spamming shoot and wiggling instead of having to aim at them. Also I think it would be better if I had some idea where the planets were (If it was there I might have just not noticed though lol).

Good game though.

@monstr thank you for playing and the feedback! There is actually a radar (green circles) around your ship which tells you where are the planets and if they are far (tiny semi-transparent circle) or close (bigger and solid circle). You can see an example on the screen I took for the game page ;)

@sachay thank you for your feedback! It's very possible that every asteroids aren't dogeable, however you can still shoot a missile in their direction to destroy them (missiles collision has priority over your ship's collision).

Nice concept. Need more anticipation for game events such as meteors and planets about to enter screen to allow the player some time to react. ;)

This was really relaxing :) Although the art is simple, it fits, and I can feel you put your heart into it, with all the different endings and planets. I needed to get used to the controls a bit, but okay, after a while it becomes natural.

The rocket-flying phase is terribly unfair. The camera is too close, and asteroids come in too fast to react to in time, so I just kept dying with little control over it. The best I could do was mash space to try and protect myself. It was so frustrating that I only landed on one planet before just quitting.

I like the title screen/game over music, it reminds me of OneShot. The game over screen of getting killed by an asteroid is also pretty funny.

Alright, it seems to be a really nice game, the music is great, the graphics are cool and the general idea too. But maybe I would be great to make the game winnable >< I couldn't even land once...So I don't know who's to blame, me, the rules or the controls but something ><
🎤 mrsylar59
16. Aug 2018 · 21:09 UTC
@thobe thank you for your feedback! The game is actually winnable if you desire to put effort into it, and we did manage to win it in its current state. That being said, the game is really hard and therefore you're clearly not the one to be blamed :)

Though it was intended to be hard (after some playtesting we found out that too few asteroids or slower ones just made the space flights boring), we do understand that overly hard games may not be everyone's cup of tea ^^

It's so cool and so frustrating at the same time ! Very nice work ! :D The art is very cool and the music is nice too ! Just the asteroïd are a little too random and there are some bugs (the game crash sometimes).

16. Aug 2018 · 21:31 UTC
@blueflowerinthewind thank you for playing our game and for your feebacks! We're aware of the crash and I tried to monitor it, but it appears to be completely random and there is probably nothing I could do about it at the moment :\

Very unique game, a cool twist on classic spaceship and planet game. The controls are definitely a bit hard to grasp at first, but overall the gameplay is very interesting and there's a lot of depth to it (in space, and on planets).

Well done!

I'm in the 5-planets-is-my-max-because-of-those-drasted-asteroids camp too.

Everything is incredibly fun, keeping track of all the resources, keeping a mental map of which planets you have visited and which you haven't and especially the switch between the two gameplay mechanics. The game over screens were hilarious too, made me want to die each possible way. Also makes me sad I couldn't reach the ending and see the victory screen. You clearly put a lot of work into your submission and it shows. Great job on that one!

Game has a nice juicy feel to it thanks to the brilliant sound effects as well as the background music. I found it very hard to land on a planet. I know speed has to be low. Is there anything else i'm missing? I also found that the planets spawned randomly - it seemed that way.

But great game with nice mechanics. Well done!
🎤 mrsylar59
21. Aug 2018 · 17:07 UTC
@mza thank you for playing and your feedback! To land on a planet you need to slow down both vertically and horizontally plus you need a good angle (aka the back of your ship facing the planet). Planets do spawn randomly (just as the lands are generated procedurally) but he hadn't enough time in order to work as much as we would have liked to.

I like how this is basically two games. Landing was hard, got I spent so much time trying to figure out, but it was satisfying. I love how the planets change their appearance after colonization. I gotta say though, 10 planets is too much, but besides that I found this entry very interesting!
axoona
31. Aug 2018 · 21:11 UTC
Nice entry, the combination of both types is interesting. Although I admit that I can't land on any planet, keep getting hit by asteroids or my rocket is either too fast or at bad angle. I find it really difficult to steer or avoid the asteroids. It could be good to have "acceleration" or be able to shoot in a different direction then where you are going.

The graphics are really neat, even though they seem very fast-sketched and it's cool to have different end game screens for different deaths

Anyway, good job!
