ShipIt by cbenoit

[raw]
made by cbenoit for LD 42 (JAM)

From your crappy shipping company, you daydream about somewhere you'd rather be....like a cruise. Time to make it happen. Save up enough cash to buy the essentials you need for your dream cruise, all while actually improving the shipping company that you work at. Though be mindful of the screenspace, there's only so much to go around, and the UI seems...stubborn.

All controlled from your mouse, use the 2 panels (bottom and right side) to both create income and spend it on upgrades/cruise items while dealing with the fact that each item hogs the screen, causing things to need to be moved around in order to get things done. Also note that any cruise items you buy, while getting you more upgrades and closer to the end, are on the screen until the end of the game. You gotta longingly stare at all that sunscreen you bulk purchased, right?

When I start the game I get the following screen:
![ship_it.png](///raw/0d6/3/z/18c39.png)

Clicking doesn't seem to make anything happen, I've tried at multiple different desktop resolutions, as well as trying to force fullscreen, but no luck :( Any advice?

It took me a minute to figure out what to do, but once I did the game was pretty straight-forward.

Also, very accurate. I work as a shipper/receiver for a living, and you portray the job almost spot-on. You perfectly captured the utter frustration of boxes just BARELY not being the same size and leaving OCD-aggrivating holes and alcoves, and I love the sarcasm in the line "Everyone loves packing peanuts!" F*** those things. They cling and make a big mess.

I got to the end after about half an hour, and I enjoyed my time. If I were to offer any criticism, it's that a time wait isn't really a huge decentive to using bigger packages. I just filled the screen with them, checked Discord for a minute, and came back to claim oodles of cash. It was more a clicker game than anything, which isn't all that bad, I guess.

@sauski You've got to click and drag one of those bars on the screen, specifically the one on the bottom. It took me a minute to figure out, too, so don't feel stupid or anything.

@seafishelle Thanks for the tip! I really like how the game state interacts with the UI. Only being able to access your UI when you physically have the space is a stroke of genius and a great application of the theme!

You know for a game that isn't that fun, I played it the longest of all games. If there were like incentives to keep playing you might have a pretty addicting game. I can't explain it, but this is a pretty genius idea. The addiction aspect is there, but when you start to claim it's like 'damn what do i do with the funds now'

Definitively like the concept of dealing with self-managed visual real-estate. Just wish there was a little more to do since it is for me too straight-forward. It reminds me of a clicker game so I would take inspiration with them on how to deal with grind-based mechanics

@g4mr yeah I tend to agree, I only ended up with enough time to do a handful of full playthroughs to check for general balance, and things definitely end up piling on a bit more than they might need to with just not enough to spend it all on (besides the upgrades) :P . I was aiming for something similar to a clicker, where it could be a thing left to its own devices in the background. Happy to see that some of those themes came through!

Haha, I loved the descriptions, we need more of those :) Very well executed clicker, especially given that you made it on your own.

Im a sucker for this kind of game. Very addictive, good job. Very cool implementation of the theme aswell. The game could use some sound tho.

I love the interaction between the UI and the play, really clever. Overall a very addicting clicker type game (without the annoying cliking part!), great job!

I always enjoy "farm and upgrade" type games. I definitely would have found some sort of music to add to the background at a minimum. Audio would have been nice on top of that. I really liked how you could only have one menu open at a time (it's like the corner drawers that hit each other) and I liked how if I put a box in the corner, it would block them out.

I really enjoyed this game. I think that the upgrades cost way too little at the end of the game. I already got ~20000 and the upgrades cost around 1000-2000 each. So I could have beat the game way faster, but I waited for the upgrades to see how many money I could get. I gow around 150000 and got bored, waited for a minute and ended the game. Still, a really nice game.

My biggest trouble initially was with the controls. It took me a bit to see that it was just a single click to pick which item to use. After that the game was enjoyable. I really liked how you can't open the clipboards while boxes are in their way. That presents a nice question of more boxes or the next best thing.

I can't play windows games, would love to see a playthrough video.
