Craig's Video Game made for LudumDare 42 That isn't even SLIGHTLY like Dig Dug 2 by GibletsofJesus
On Friday I started playing around with the marching squares algorithm and made a Pico 8 implementation with some nice looking lands tiles. I said it would be nice if this was a video game and then someone pointed out that Ludum Dare was this weekend. So strictly speaking I allowed myself more than two days, but my development time on this hasn't been too intense. I'd put the amount of total dev time around around the 20 hour mark
And so, a video game was made! And it's nothing like Dig Dug 2, honest!

Time before was mainly spent doing generic tech anyway, never intended for it to be a LD entry.
If you make it a jam game and make a note of which parts were created before friday at 6pm EDT, then that should be okay under the rules. However, you are supposed to opt out of categories where stuff was made outside of the jam time. If you made a majority during the jam time, then listing what wasn't made during the time for raters to know what not to rate would be useful. :)
20 hours is a large amount for a compo entry, as it is hard to do more than that in only 2 days with eating and sleeping.
You could also mark it as an unfinished game to opt out of ratings.
PS. you are not supposed to make updates to the game after the deadline, if you do, you must keep the original one around for people to rate, and keep the updated one for people not rating.
I know it would've been hard given the time constraints, but having a 1 player mode with a dumb ai would've been really nice. I wasn't able to chase someone down to play this with, though I think it would have been fun. I like the simple graphics and the destructible terrain worked well. It definitely fit the theme.
That said, I agree with the others that this entry does not meet the requirements for the compo. I really encourage you to switch to the jam, or you may find that your scores reflect that fact.
Will change to Jam tomorrow once I get the chance, thank you all for the kind words so far :)
The attention to detail looks great here, congrats on the entry!
Things I would like: a better game over screen explaining what happened (it took me 5 tries to understand the rules, as I never played Dig Dug before), and obviously enemy AIs :-)

I wasn't even aware a dig dug 2 exists, even though I love dig dug. Thank you for bringing it to my attention
