No One's Land by tenshi42

[raw]
made by tenshi42 for LD 42 (JAM)

No One's Land is a split-screen territory conquest game.

Plant towers to mark your territory.
Put mines and throw bombs to counter your opponent.

Play it with a friend, or try the "vs AI" mode (don't judge it too hard 😅).

Objectives

Capture territories by building towers and closing space.

instruction-1.jpg

Bomb your opponent’s towers to make him lose territories.

instruction-2.jpg

The player with the most free space acquired at the end of the time wins!

instruction-3.jpg

Notes

  • Towers have 2HP.
  • Walls have 1HP.
  • Towers and walls do not count as free space for the final score.
  • By going in a direction while you put a bomb, you can throw it away.
  • Your own mines and bombs do harm you and your buildings. Watch out for rebounds!
  • Base camps are indestructibles, but you can destroy the opponent extensions (and your own).
  • The AI is called Timmy. Be gentle with him.

I appreciate Timmy, he's doing his best. One thing that was kind of weird is at one point a bomb slowly rolled across the screen from against his tower to against mine - I don't think it did any damage, but it was a weird buggy thing. I also feel like the music is at odds with the sounds effects. I also don't know if the health of the tower and walls ever really came into play, though I didn't play it with another person so I don't really know. Fun game overall!

Really cool concept and I loved both the art and sound!. The game did feel a little weird at times but the concept is definitely there. I found sometimes the AI just got stuck and stopped moving/ moved between the same 2 blocks. However in such a short period of time this is very impressive!

AhAha. Funny. And I like style.

AI seems to throw bombs somehow. But still quite good.

Very good game! It's really cool to play! Even against an AI!
The gameplay is innovative and in the theme. Too bad the graphics could not be finished. Maybe with more time the game will become even better!

Like the concept, feel like it would be really hectic against a real player.
Timmy does his best but sometimes gets stuck, its also pretty hard to hit a wall or player with a bomb, feel like i killed myself more often than the target because of rebounds haha.

Really fun game ! The music is cool. I find a little bug that allows me to create tower instantly.
You need to hold R then T and once they are hold, release T and then R.
I have also bugs like this in my game so it's ok, it allows me to destroy the IA and it was satisfying haha

I really like the concept of this. AI was a little confused at times but great building block for development. Hope to see more work on it in future. Awesome work

Too bad i wasn't with my friends when i tested it, I had to play with Timmy (but i guess programming an AI is hard, and the game in itself is already wonderful for the little time you spent on it).
I can see the link with the theme even if i think you only concentrated on the notion of "space" and kinf of left out the "running out" part. But i'm being harsh, graphics are really good (the style made me think of a friend of mine, i'll show him your game someday), gameplay works really well and you made the effort to put some music.

Love the base you've built here! I only was able to play this single player, but I can imagine it getting really intense with two players and would make a great couch competitive game. The song that played during gameplay got a little grating after a few minutes, but other than that I really enjoyed playing this!

This game is the bomb! The music makes me think of an angry lawnmower but apart from that, a fine game indeed.

I really REALLY liked the soundtrack! The gameplay was not that fun (With AI.) And I did not have anyone around to play with. The AI was a bit stupid. I liked if he could come to my place and leave landmines and make it hard for me as I do it to him.

I'm really really impressed with this game's audio - of course the music being the main part. It makes it all really engaging. I spent some time idling in the menu just to hear it... This would work as a standalone musical jam entry. Great work guys !

The rest of the game also works preeeeetty well, graphics are simple and nice - the UI and input customization menu is such a great feature. Gameplay-wise, those mechanics are really simple to apprehend and this feels like a great basis for a party game. It also runs smoothly, with an impressive absence of bugs... This is really well made, congratulations !

Good execution of the concept, the graphics are nice, and even the title screen is polished. It reminds me of an old Linux game I used to play in the late 90s but I can’t remember its name… Apologies to Timmy but two-player mode is a lot more interesting! I hope you manage to improve him somehow.

Oh and please add an option to listen to the title music during the game! It’s so more relaxing! :-)

Like this concept, I played it 3 times against the AI it was fun at the beginning but at the end it got stuck in the same place... :( I need to find another player because I liked it. The game works and feels pretty well, if you are going to continue with this project I would recommend to implement a way to upgrade your towers to defend or to have a bigger space in control.

We also have an HTML5 entry if you want to play it and rate it.

I love the art and also thought the mechanics were nice. I applaud you for making both a 2 player game AND a player 1 vs AI. Brilliant job on this!
