Cover.png

On the 4th of November, 2004, Commuter train No.3241N derailed and the tunnel above it collapsed.

You are the sole survivor of this horrific train wreck. A pipe has burst, and the tunnel is slowly flooding.

With both sides of the tunnel blocked with rubble and concrete, your last hope is to dig through the soft soil above you.

Dun dun! this is my most ambitious LD entry so far, I hope everyone enjoys. :v: (if game crashes or lags badly, close and reopen.)

Very cool and interesting concept, the art-style is very cool as well. I will say the fact that the digging takes so long for one block did take me out of the game, if that was reduced it would feel a lot nicer to play.

Overall good job :)

I really loved the graphics (simple, yet efficient), and the introduction / tutorial is great !
However, I felt that the controls where a bit tedious. Why do I need to confirm everytime I dig? After the first time, we know that it'll take an hour...
The mood was nice, and I felt and urge to search the internet whether it was based on a true story or not.

@incinious @vfabien21 , gotcha guys! I have now tweaked it abit so that it only pops up once, hope this may improve the experience for you guys and future players.

Found this enjoyable. Felt the pace could have been a little quicker but really liked the style and feeling set by the intro. Well done.

I have removed the Fade-in-and-out effect! Because the satisfaction of my players trump all! (although the pace, I admit, is still damn slow)

This aesthetic is beautiful! I as mentioned the digging is really tedious. Other than that a really great submission! Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future!

First things first: everything is really tiny on the screen, it would really be more enjoyable if everything was a bit bigger. It's a shame because your graphics are neat!
The pace is a little slow indeed but not that much.
Overall it's a nice entry and I had fun playing it. It would not take much to enhance it to the next level.
Cheers!

I liked it. the first time I realized the water is coming up, I panicked :D
It would be easier to read if the texts were bigger. I was playing it on the TV screen and I couldn't read the instructions.
Also, I would have liked to play more if there was a music playing in the background.

The presentation is great, tutorial is within the world itself on billboards. The manual is pretty neat too. However I do think that the small inventory was a bit forced. You have to stack all the food and water in a pile, then move it when the water level goes up, rinse and repeat. If you want to keep the small inventory I would suggest a way to quickly pick up the items (maybe shift click?), and a "drop all" button. Also the game window is tiny. Since I have a 4K display the game was unplayable. I had to turn down the resolution to 720p to see the text. But overall I really liked the game.

Unfortunately the game was running at about 10 fps for me so I stopped trying after 2 runs. I wanted to cheat and see what the game looks like but apparently I need the paid version of the Clickteam fusion engine?

Anyway, I really like the atmosphere - from an unsuspecting everyday commuter to a desperate fighter for life in mere seconds.

Serious game you made there. Sadly I lack tactical thinking at this hour to go far, I'll try replaying tomorrow, will postpone rating until then, since judging by comments I didn't get to see half of the game. Even with wall glitch I found which I abused to skip several layers, I usually get dehydrated. I really like the graphics style, well mostly the humans and station scene.

@bloc97 @pnghasemi @my-sweet-whomp Listening to the feedback from you guys ,I have added a new "fullscreen" version of the game (although the graphic quality may drop abit). I have also added a quick pick up (hover mouse over item and Shift-Click) and a drop all button.

As for @boltkey, yes this was made in the paid version of Clickteam fusion, however I can make a cut down version that should be able to run on the free one (will need some time tho, and is uncertain whether is doable).

Enjoy!

Actually, worrying that I might be breaking the rules adding the quick pick up and drop feature (since you cant add new features), I removed them, sorry guys.

ill keep the fullscreen version tho.

Also added two bottles of water and a box of food.

I really liked the visual style of the game. I really liked the idea of the game play, and also how well the game play, graphics and mood all suited each other (a sign of a well made game I think). I would say though that, while I liked that you had to constantly keep your resources above water, I found doing it with the mouse a bit tedious, partly because things were quite small and so harder to click on. Even if you had it so that you click and drag items to move them, instead of clicking to pick them up and clicking to put them down, that might have been easier.

I still think though it was a pretty nifty game , especially for your third Ludum Dare! Well done!

This game is phenomenal, I love the opening! Ambience at the start is very atmospheric and well-done, and the lack of music when underground promotes a feeling of loneliness. Interacting and dig mechanics were very cool, and the art was nicely made. This is a fantastic entry, keep it up! :)

Hey, I tried replaying the game, fullscreen is a nice upgrade and doesn't ruin the graphics for me. A lot of things about this game is nicely done, but again I'm having trouble getting far without ending up too hungry or thirsty to dig, often without option to go back, so the biggest problem I have with the game is how much time it demands to replay, maybe save checkpoints would have saved the day.

Slow pace but quite interesting mechanically. I wasn't a huge fan of the dirt replacing mechanic, mostly because you couldn't reposition dirt "clumps" after they were dug. The slow leak of water was quite good pressure though.

This game is great! We managed to survive after several attempts. I want to point out a couple of bugs that showed up when we played it, though.

First, when you're in the train station, every time we bought a ticket, the ticket would disappear if clicked. It works fine if you drag the ticket into the "Use" box, but if you just click it, it seems to vanish and can't be put into use or inventory. I'm not sure where it's going to, maybe it's too small for me to find after dropping it. (I had to restart when this happened)

Second, there's something a little off about the collision, I think. Sometimes you can just sort of glitch through the dirt walls and then you just float upward until there's a gap in the dirt where you stop and are deposited into the gap. Which makes it easier to cheat at the game, but defeats the purpose a little bit haha.

As others have mentioned, the story text is REALLY small and hard to read.

Lastly, after we completed the game, whether by winning or losing, the cursor vanished for us every time. We had to exit the game and restart it to start another run.

(Also: Is there any point to the glowsticks? We just left them at the bottom since you don't really need light haha.)

Great use of the theme! Enjoyable survival game. :smiley_cat:

Thank you guys for all the comments and feedback!

@derpyjish Yeah, I kinda implemented a quick pickup and drop feature after the 72 hours, but later removed it due to possible violation of the rules. Ill re-add it after the Jam tho. Thanks for the feedback.

@kr4ft3r I agree, it takes alot of time to get back to where you were if you died and had to replay. Unfortunately I was unable to think of a reliable way to save and reload checkpoints. I might try adding one after the Jam tho. Thanks for the feedback!

@max-cahill The dirt clumps were originally the same size as the hole you dug, and the smaller clumps were added at the last minute, unfortunately this meant I did not have enough time to implement the mechanic to re-dig these clumps (planned time needed to dig was 30 minutes). I will be adding the ability to re-dig these clumps after the Jam however. Thanks for the feedback!

@astralore The ticket, for some unfathomable reason, would vanish if you picked up and later dropped it. Why this happens I unfortunately don't know even after digging through the code. Will try fixing it but don't hope too much.

As for the collisions, yes, CF2.5's built in collision is pretty shitty, and this was made worse because of the massive amount of dirt blocks. I MIGHT redo the collisions, but also don't hope too much. (And I intentionally left in the wall glitch for those who wanted to finish the game faster.)

Yeah, text is smaaaaallll, which is why I added the "Fullscreen" version, unless it was still very small, to which I am at a loss.

The missing cursor is because I forgot to re-enable it after the ending screen, whoops, small quick fix added.

As for the glowsticks, the game was originally absurdly dark. In fact I might just make it absurdly dark for a new "hard mode".

Thanks for the feedback!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention we were playing on fullscreen, with quite a large monitor even. Specifically, I mean the story text is very small - all of the other in-game text is fine.

Really like the mood of the game. I got a bug where I slept close the dirt and was able to slowly rise withing the dirt to the top of the level and win :( I think a closer camera would have helped in pushing the claustrophobic nature of the situation and possibly reinforce the theme more.

I liked the presentation and the atmosphere in the beginning. I like there was a built in tutorial in the train station and the whole presentation set the mood. The came kind of tapered off for me and got repetitive once I started digging. Having to manually dump the dirt, though helping the mood, killed the pacing for me, especially since the effect of where I dumped the dirt seemed to have little impact. In the end it was a bit to grindy for me.

Really nice game! Graphics looking nice. Tutorial on billboards at the beginning, that explain how to play the game. As mentioned by other contestants the inventory is a little bit small but probably kept that way intentionally. Keep it up!

I really like the idea here and it has a lot of potential but it feels a bit finicky to play. I kept moving the mouse to the side I wanted to drop the dirt instead of using the keyboard. I think I would have preferred more mouse control overall, like maybe right click to interact with the dirt (dig/drop) and left to interact with objects. Text is a little on the small side and the character gets a bit lost in the background, I played the full screen version too. They are just minor gripes but did impact my enjoyment slightly. Now onto the positives.

I enjoyed the mood of the game and the whole intro bit reminded me of the second level of Flashback, which was cool. Shame there was a crash, I wanted to see where our character was going! I can see this developing into a nice game, like an inverted, survival based Mr Driller style game. I liked the survival aspect of it but maybe too strict with the limited inventory. I think you have the basis a good game here, I think you should give it some post jam love. Good job!

PS. On my third play I seemed to warp through the dirt at the beginning on the tunnel.
