Running out of Toaster by Jegus9

[raw]
made by Jegus9 for LD 42 (COMPO)

UPDATE 15/08/2018 - POST COMPO VERSIONS ADDED! The post compo downloads are separated from the original in the itch.io page, so you can still play the originals if you want. Improvements:

Skip button: Yes the god damn skip button was added.

Blender nerfed: it's shot cooldown was increased from .15 second to .25 second. It's still hard to get past them, because that's the intention, but now it's possible.

Lots of lamps removed: some of them were keeping players stuck in the walls at respawn, so I removed the ones that seemed the most likely to do that.

Thanks for the feedback and bug reporting.

The art is cute, I particularly like the way the lighting shifts on the character as you walk around. The intro was a little long, but it was pretty amusing, so that makes up for it. One thing I think would be worth adding is some sort of visible change on the lamps when you touch them, because until I died the first time I didn't realize what they did. This seems like a fairly complex game, so I'm impressed you finished not just on time, but a little early. Nice job!

The level design seems well thought out, the plot is funny I really liked the sounds too. At one point I got stuck half in a wall when I respawned at a lamp

The intro is fun. The pixel art is quite basic, what is the yellow thing out there ? plants ? The controls are not common and quite hard to play with. And when you die, you respawn at the same place, is that intentional ?

Ho and good point for making your game on godot :)

Nice art, quite fun gameplay. The intro was funny but it still put me to sleep later on :stuck_out_tongue: .

However, please consider that a lot of people use the QWERTZ keyboard layout, so putting shoot and jump on Y and Z is quite painfull for them.

@trystan-sarrade the yellow things are lamps (and secretly checkpoints)
@vincent-knauss @pedro-m-marangon that's interesting, if you could, try to tell me in which lamp you got stuck? Like, what is nearby? If there's a bug that interrupts gameplay, I should fix it.

@jegus9 it was in the area where you are having to climb up and dodge projectiles from two different boiling pots. There is a flat vertical wall and one lamp right up alongside it, perhaps partially overlapping, and it was that lamp where I got stuck

Well made platformer, good level design, interesting enemies and even saves, great entery! But there is still a room for improvement: Firstly, god damn skip button(seriously, it's not that hard), Secondly, pause button, and thirdy, I don't know if its allowed on LD, but please change blender AI so they don't shoot randomly, it's really hard to get past them without getting hit(maybe add some kind of timer that changes direction). Overall: good entery, I really like an idea and final boss.

This game is pretty fun. I like the action packed gameplay. There was a healthy amount of enemy variety and a good number of checkpoints. One thing I noticed while playing is that, because the camera only starts moving once you move a certain distance towards one side of the screen or the other, there was always more space behind the player than in front of them, making it hard to see what's coming up. I liked the music, but the environmental art was a bit chaotic and could have been more cohesive. Overall, this is a solid entry. Nice work!

Nice entry - quite funny and enjoyable to play. (Thank you for your honesty about not adding a skip button XD)

The main character is really cute, and overall the art is nice! The gameplay is also really nice, I had a bit of a hard time using z & x to do things, so that's really the only thing I would change. At first I was so confused about the lamps, but that's such a cool feature to have added.

Good job!

The music was great and the enemies were interesting. The game could be fun, but some things made it hard for me to fully enjoy it: The blender's sound effect could be heard from everywhere and they were loud. The map was oversized too and lacked content, I know you wanted to make it a bit longer but that's not the best way, at least I don't think it is. Maybe you could fix that by placing some stuff the player can collect and keep count of how many they got.

Also nice little reference in the opening cinematic

This is a cute game :) The level (map) felt a bit too much with not many things to do... could have done with smaller space i guess.
Had fun playing the game though. Cool work!
