THE HUNT by Xangotrick

[raw]
made by Xangotrick for LD 38 (COMPO)

The hunt is (or at least was supposed to be) a game about managing resources in a small spaceship environment. You have to hunt strange snake like creatures to harvest their energy, and that energy is scarce.

It was supposed to tie into the theme through the fact that the world is small and therefore the resources within are limited! Needless to say, as for many, I didn't get to do everything I want! ^^'

Thanks for playing!

PS: after the splash screen, the black loading screen may take time before the intro. Couldn't solve that problem.(It seems that playing it in admin mode fixes it?)

The artstyle is very interesting, although a bit disorienting. It's pretty hard to make out openings because the inside of those shafts is the same as the area surrounding it. I like it for innovation though.

The song I've heard is cool. But I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing. I crouched out of the first room, saw a thing fly over me, got the gun and then I'm stuck in the next room where you get the wrench. The thing that says 'get 4 ammo' does nothing for me and I can't see any way out of there. So that's unfortunately as far as I could get in your game.
I think I may be missing something here, so I'll hold off on the rating for now.

I'm sorry but I couldn't open the first gate... Got the wrench, and went about shooting the snake a little but I couldn't for my life open that gate!

I like the enclosed space and the rooms, the enemies are fun to watch as the flee and gives them a bit of realism. Do check out if the gate is bugged!

I should say that you've done quite an impressive amount of work for 48 hours of compo though I saw only a small partition of game as I couldn't find any way to get into ventillation system in the next room after getting the gun. Abstention from using textures and outline shader unify the graphics and give a minimalist Antichamber-like atmosphere to the game which is a good point, I guess.

Fun: it would be more fun if there were more enemies and a mission each day.

Innovation: it's a resource management game, but not innovative.

Theme: I don't think it adhered well to the theme proposal.

Graphics: beautiful in some rooms, but a bit inconsistent between them. The 3d models are very well made.

Audio: the music is good.

Mood: the introduction story is very interesting, although the font is difficult to read.

Unfortunately, on the second day, I ran out of ammo and the recharger did not work.

I liked the music and art. I'm always impressed at how you guys create all this 3D modells in 48hours. Unfortunately I couldn't play that much because the recharger wasn't working for me. I did have fun till I ran out of bullets though :b

Solidworks was key for me @gris. It's an industrial 3d modeller normally, so you'll have a hard time making "organic" models like a face, for instance.
But for something that has hard surfaces, like a gun, buildings facades, tools, that kind of stuff, it really improves the workflow, compared to other options like maya, or blender.

Thanks for the review!

Interesting game, didn't quite seem to be able to work out what to do. Not sure what the wrench was for. Also there is a hole in the corner of the room that has what looks like is water

First run through I did not realise I had ammo until it was gone. Haha.

Thanks for all the comments!

This was my first serious attempt at an LD, and I'm happy with the responses I've got. Next time, I'll have to put more focus on making in user friendly, and make sure the player understands exactly what is asked of him.

Also, that wrench thing is a but, sorry bout that.

I think I spent too much time wanting it to look good. And not enough on gameplay.

Definitely has potential, I think it's too hard. Aesthetic is nice, controls are pretty solid, but I kept running out of ammo. If I kept going and figured out all the patterns before firing arbitrarily maybe I could have got further :) Nice job, and I'm interested to see what you come up with next time.
