Room Tetris by Hilvon

[raw]
made by Hilvon for LD 42 (JAM)

"Room Tetris" is our family in-joke for trying to fit into one place more things that reasonably should fit there.

This basically describes the game.

You have a room (split into tiles) and a set of things to place into it. Use mouse to select what you want to place and try to position it into the room. There are however 2 additional constrains: - The room has 2 windows and both must remain unobstructed - meaning nothing is stanging on the middle tile in front of window. - A clear no-diagonals path must remain from the door (on the right) and touching all the placed items.

The game will no allow you to put an item if any of those two conditions are not met. You can pick up and reposition items that were already placed.

Press Esc to remove the item (you will have to put it back eventualy).

Space to rotate item.

It is not obvious, because the supplementary texts are missing, but the game consists of 4 levels. Once you place all the items from one level - new items are added to the list. Once you clear all 4 levels - you get the game wins screen.

Yes, it IS POSSIBLE to fit all items into the room while meeting additional constraints. Thought it might be challenging.

@stepan-shabalin And now the game actually exists!
I am a tad late for Compo :sob: But Jam will also do. :)

I made it first try! :D
The game is nice, in my opinion it lacks some sound effects when you put down a furniture though. Great job :)

@mrsylar59 Yeah, the game is not too challenging. Actually I only made sure that there is a solution when I was creating it, so I didn't check if there are multiple and how hard it is to get to one.
The sounds... are not my talent to be hones. Thought they would be helpful. At least a "thud" when placing an item. And a puff of dust would be helpful too. Maybe I will cram it in for a post-Jam version...

@van-long Well... Yes. All the feedback to player was cut doe to lack of time (the game was supposed to be a Compo... didn't hit the deadline though, but still stopped development at usual Compo deadline.
And the game is meant to be played start to finish so there was no plan for "keep playing"

I enjoyed playing the game. I thought the item names and some of the amount of the items were funny. Sometimes the red indicating you cannot place was a bit light and unable to be easily seen.

@drbrick Glad you enjoyed it!

Yes the indication is not always clear. I blame the brownish-wooden color I ended up using for... most of items. Kind of blurs the difference it id becomes red since it is already red-ish.

Nice game! We have this joke in my family too (and right now I'm playing suitcase tetris because moving back to my country after 1 year abroad).

The UI is good and the game is looking nice.

I wouldn't put this much ale in my rum...
I could beat the game, but once I put more stuff in at once and after that I couldn't place them. Otherwise it's a good game, I like organizing stuff :)

Very nice. Lack of music hurts a lot, but I enjoyed the experience. Also a timeout would be good to at least set a game goal, since you simply give more items and sometime you will eventually run out of space and not be able to do anything.
I really liked the idea of reaching every single package in the room, so you have to care about not blocking the paths.

Thank you for playing the game! Glad you liked it.

The is in fact lacking a lot of things. Music (and some other sound effects like thuds on placing items and mouse clicks on UI...) or some better feedback. Or more item variety. Or a better pattern, because currently I only made sure that there is a solution to the game (the number of items is actually fixed, and finite), but there appeared to be more and easier ways to arrange them in a room qualifying for victory.

I think there was a typo in the help section. Did it say top left when really it meant top right?

Nice entry Hilvon, I enjoyed the tetris- like gameplay with the furniture but sometimes it was little tricky to see immediately how many slots the current object occupies. Oh after playing some time I can feel the simulator getting on me of feeling moving is a hard work in the game too haha. Just a simple extra layer of challenge on top maybe with some timer? Could make a great improvement, nice entry and perfect fit for the theme too! :)

@chadrbanks , Well... There might be. I aimed the game for the compo (because I don't have time for development on Monday - dayjob) so it was really rushed at the end. Still didn't hit the deadline (not a big surprise given this game development started Sunday morning as I had to scrap original idea.

@bbaf Thank you for playing.

@t8kk Well, originally I wanted the game to be harder simply by having many items you have to manage and by distributing them in layers like you have to struggle to put all the items in, and them be asked to add some more.
But with really tight timeframe, I had to resort to only ensuring there is a solution for all the items, but it turned out there were multiple, and one I designed for wasn't the easiest one to build. So the game ended up easier than intended.
Also I originally wanted to add some extra UI hints like tiles under active item lighting up green or red.
I also envisioned some speech ballons from the wife to cheer things up while you are playing, commenting your actions. But didn't get the chance to actually put it into game.
