UNchessTOMIZER by dusakus

[raw]
made by dusakus for LD 41 (JAM)

Bez nazwy.png For this LD we took a 100% strategy game (chess), and shoved a bunch of randomness into it.

Each turn you get five cards. Cards can give you a move modifier, range boost, special action, and finally the actual move. You can use all five cards in your turn, for up to 5 moves.

Game modes possible:

  • player vs player

  • player vs "highly trained set of neural networks" (aka a chain of nested if-s)

  • AI vs AI - nice to watch

Technical stuff:

  • Engine used: Godot 3

  • 2D Assets from: made in either Krita or screenshots from OneNote (yes really)

  • 3D Assets from: made in Blender or CC0 from the vastness of the interwebs

  • Music from: made in LMMS

Team:

  • kristoverek - Programming (chess), 3D art

  • dusakus - Programming (not chess), 2D """"art""""

  • devilmaydie - music

Really love the juxtaposition of standard old-school chess game with hand-drawn cards. Not sure what the theme mash-up is exactly... sort of strategy vs proc-gen? Perhaps a roguelike map would've sold the theme a little better. But still, a great, fun game that maintains a surprising amount of strategic gameplay, despite the crazy aspects!

Oh good lord, you took the analogies for Hearthstone and chess literally and it's a nice demo of well, they aren't the same =) You did lots here to accomplish multi and AI, nicely done! Cheers!

This is a neat idea, but as a chess player I couldn't help but notice the board is set up incorrectly! Nicely done anyway :)

Great concept, this could definitely be expanded! I was a bit confused about the movement at first - probably would like to see some visual indications of what pieces are selected and also highlighted tiles before clicking. Great job.

Interesting game, it requires insane amount of tactization. I managed to crash it when taking enemy king though.

Keep up the good work!

It was a little difficult to figure out how to actually attack and what units could attack. Some additional highlighting for the latter could have helped. All in all, solidly executed, though.

I am sure it was on my end, but I couldn't figure out how to capture pieces. I REALLY liked the music of the game, it was a bit loud at first though. Good game, overall

@rs11s21n It seems there is some confusion regarding capturing enemy pieces, so let me explain that movement target is always a tile. So capturing an enemy piece is done the same way as moving a piece - by clicking on a tile (beneath it).

@kristoverek hmm... it's so so typical... i try to send my figures on enemy figures by clicking on them and dark army was to power full me but now i understand the power of light path and destroy theirs army! XD (btw i'm not sure but maybe you can fix this?)

This is a brilliant idea. Unfortunately, the game seems rather unstable, on both Windows and Linux (not tried OSX), crashing after some moves. I'd have loved to have been able to get through a game without a crash. :(

The controls are fairly unintuitive, and required a few blunders to get going. There are also a few UI bugs.

Good concept. Hard to figure out all the strategies.

Great idea! I had some trouble playing the mac version, sometimes I lost the card hints popup, sometimes the highlighting of the moves wasn't working correctly. But I can see after some fine-tuning and bug fixing, this could be a really interesting fun game! Hope you'll keep working on it, good job!

Really great idea to have chess played with cards. I was a little confused on how things worked and I couldn't seem to kill anything. I also got a pawn to the other side and it didn't turn into a queen. The music is really well done and I liked the chess art. I really liked the movement of the cards when you hover over them. With some polishing I think this game will be really neat. Good job.
