Outnumbered by thebillington

[raw]
made by thebillington for LD 40 (COMPO)

Outnumbered is a topdown shooter game where your main aim is to get as high a score as possible by killing enemy turrets. However there is a catch, the more turrets you kill, over time the more turrets that will spawn. Can you use fast reflexes and accurate aim to take out the turrets before you are overrun?

The game is still in development, check out the beta version to see the changes made since Ludum Dare finished: http://outnumberedgame.co.uk/beta/

INITIAL CONCEPT

Built using the p5.js library for rendering and a custom physics engine, the game took around 10 hours in total to build from the ground up. Unfortunately due to other commitment I was unable to continue working on the game over the second day of the jam meaning their is a distinct lack of menus, sound or general polish.

Turns out I was outnumbered. Really smooth controls

Solid foundation here, gets quite hectic as more turrets spawn! Would be nice to be able to hold down mouse to shoot rather than having to click each time.

Tight controls, really fun. Wish i could hold down the mouse button as was mentioned, also some sound would have been nice

Fluent game play, clean visuals. I enjoyed playing! It's hard but I wouldn't say too hard. It a bit spammy, either allow holding down a key or at a gun cooldown would have made it less so. Good work!

Man, why arcade games are so addictive ? :D i love the smooth controls, sad that you couldn't work on it for the second day, good luck next time i guess ! :)

It entertained me for a while, made 40 highscore. However I miss some audio feedback from the game, besides that It is great!

Bullet hell! Loving it! Neat controls, a lot of fun.

Quite simplistic but fits the theme well. Improvements I would suggest include; adding some more game feel elements (screen shake, enemies knockedback on hit, some audio feedback). Some background music would have been good as well.

Controls feel good, and I like the minimalist visuals. Definitely missing a little audio, but for 10 hours this is great :)

Love the controls, very smooth and satisfying to shoot!

Oh no, it's nier automata last route all over again!

I think it was pretty cool and balanced. I have a couple of suggestions: Take another look at the hitbox, I tested for some time and I am sure enemy bullets can hit you without touching you. And I thought it was harder to see the turret when it spawned over the controls (it wasn't a big issue, it's an unecessary annoyance IMO)

@settings thanks for feedback. The collision detection should be perfect as it uses the radius and width/height of shapes to calculate. I suspect it is because of the order of the rendering and physics calls, or possibly to do with the renderer itself. I will look into it :)

Thanks everyone for your nice comments! Feedback much appreciated and I'm hoping to continue with the game when I'm not busy teaching.

Solid little bullet hell style game. The graphics leave a little something be desired, but the controls are very responsive and it works well.

This game goes 0 - 60 reaalll fast. I'm a big fan of bullet shooters, and this fits in that niche nicely!

Would have wished for a bit more variety in enemies, but for 48 hours this was great and super fun!

For such short development time you already got a nice, functional prototype. I like the turret spawning little animation.

On my first run I couldn't see the turrets, though. I was only seeing the projectiles and was incorrectly assuming I'd have to shoot (with no success, obviously) or pick them up (you can imagine the result). It could have been simply that I had some zoom out applied to the tab, I didn't check that first time.

Good job! :)

@SammyB check out the beta version on the website now. I've introduced waves of enemies and now there is a little variety.

I really enjoyed the few minutes I played this game, the gameplay feels really smooth and I got some kind of tunnelvision the more enemys spawned!

I would love to "kill" enemy bullets though so there's a way to get out if cornered by enemys shooting!

@Hooraygil play the newest build at the beta version of the site. There is a new type of enemy after round 1.

Tried the LD & the beta. Very tight controls and collision detection. The music for the beta was interesting, I still don't know if it went well, but it is stuck in my head. I wish I was a square and not a rectangle. But great job, reminds me of a minimalist game I made to help my son learn to use a touchscreen.

@jfraser314 thanks for the feedback! I am not sure about the theme either to be honest, I'm an Ukulele player and don't have much else going for me so is most likely a placeholder until I can find something more suitabe. Love the game you made for your son!

My highscore is 42.
I don't know how I feel about that. XD
In all seriousness, a simple but enjoyable game.

That was fun! It is a simple concept executed really well! I thought the controls were really tight, and it was also engaging. Yeah, I think you already know what it would have needed to make it better: more polish, fancy fonts, sounds, etc. All in all though, great game and I would love to have seen what it would have become if you had more time.
