Greenie Goes Right by quicklyer

[raw]
made by quicklyer for LD 42 (COMPO)

Summary

Didn't have nearly as much time for LD42 as I was expecting sadly, so I went retro, and simple. Toying around with Canvas I thought this would be kind of a funny little game. Thanks for playing.

Tools: Canvas + TypeScript, sfxr, Bacardi Superior

Score is computed by the height of the column you just moved from times the "# of loops" multiplier.

NOTE: regarding score -- you can start a new game during the initial block falling animation as many times as you want before Greenie appears, by pressing ENTER or clicking the mouse (kind of a bug but I left it in in case you are looking for different colored blocks) so if you care about your avg score stats obviously be wary of that.

Post-Jam Version?

Wasn't planning on making a post-jam version but with the brilliant suggestions I got I think I'd kinda like to. Thanks everyone for the support! Here's the running list of the feedback I'd focus on:

  • leaderboards (thanks @andre-van-zuydam)
  • pitched sfx based on the board structure, height (thanks @local-minimum)
  • an option for smooth falling blocks (thanks @shp)
  • telegraphed incoming drops with a second of hang-time or so (inspired by @shp 's comment)
  • force an upper limit to consecutive falling blocks (thanks @local-minimum)
  • more obvious when/why the multiplier bonus goes up (thanks @josia-roncancio)
  • safely land on falling blocks if you are moving from a higher column (thanks @mike-inprinciple)
  • increase speed as multiplier goes up (I think telegraphed drops will help balance the difficulty of this) (thanks @local-minimum)
  • balance sound volume better and maybe some nicer base sfx in general

I've probably seen games with 4k graphics today. But I have not had as much fun on those as I did this. This has huge potential on mobile :)

This simple game deserves a mobile version. It's incredibly fun!
Nice entry bro! really solid.

Top marks for innovation, this is a really fun game! It's simple yet challenging and I think it's got a lot of potential if you carry on developing it. Well done!

Well actually i loved when you got minimalist style but to be honest with that mechanics i just hope you can do better. Why ? 'cause the simple of the mechanics is very cool and addictive ! Keep it up you got something really interesting pal.

The simplicity was good, I didn't like the sound. The instructions were clear, good job in the time you had. Please don't release for mobile, I'm not sure when to stop ;) , a score counter vs other people will make it a winner.

Simple, yet enough depth to try to get better at it. Keep it up!

You should port this to mobile :D

Addicting casual game! This got me trying many different techniques, like rushing for loops and playing it safe for longer games, Managed to get 6 500 points with balanced tactic! This would work very well as a mobile game as is, or with little more features.

While quite simple, this game is really fun, and deceptively challenging. I think the audio could've been improved a bit, but the graphics worked really well. Good job!

It was pretty fun and addictive. You should probably put it on mobile.

Great game! Not being able to backtrack also made for some really tense and fun moments (especially when the columns are approaching the ceiling).

Pretty refreshing to play such a simple yet addicting game. Took a bit to wrap my head around the fact that you couldn't move left, kept killing myself. Duh, Greenie goes RIGHT, not left! Enjoyed it a lot, well done! This would really work great on mobile!

Oh my gosh how am I so bad at this, and why is being so bad at it so much fun?

This is beautifully simple, and I enjoyed "press anything to move right". This game is exactly what it says on the tin. I agree with those saying this would be great on mobile - just tap the screen.

Sweet little game. I instinctively press D to move right and get super confused when A also moves me right. :P Fun little distraction. You should make a mobile build with tap to move. No big feature suggestions, but can see loads of potential.

Great stuff!
I have to admit it took me a while to figure out how the scoring worked, since I somehow didn't immediately understand what "# of loops" was supposed to mean. I played the first couple of rounds trying to move as little as possible in the hopes that my multiplier would somehow increase :face_palm: (Those rounds were not very exciting :P)

Apart from that, a simple but fun concept very well executed. Good job! :)

The graphics might be simple but the game is a really great concept and great execution, too. :) I like the little touches, like how you can re-roll on the level randomizer at the beginning if all the blocks haven't fallen yet.

Simple yet awesome game to play. This game reminded of that road crossing like game in game boy. The sound was also very good and satisfying. Overall a really polished and nice game!

Simple concept but it works, wish there was a bit more animation to the blocks falling to help grasp the overall picture of the playing field better!

I loved that this was a straightforward idea, but so difficult to master. Definitely had me saying "Just one more go. I've got to beat that score."

The thing I could not wrap my head around was the fact that you go through falling blocks to land under them, even though on the previous column you are comparatively higher. So, in 3D terms, you clip though the falling block. That got me in a non fun way. What got me in a fun way, is that my brain screamed press left, and the character walked right as the premise of the game goes.

Simple, but still feels polished. I had similar issues as the previous comment, with thinking I could land on blocks.

Brilliant! Your game is simple and extremely fun! Everything in this plays nicely. You incentivize high scores in a very effective way that encourages replayability. Since there is only one input you could easily port this to anything and have it play great!
This game will be one of those games I regularly go back to way after the fact. Excellent Job on this! I like it a lot:)

Very simple but much fun. Surprisingly hard too. One time though it felt like the game really didn't give me any chance to win when it dropped hats on 5 columns in a row. My guess is that the drops were random and so maybe it would be good with a restriction there. Also the visuals got me thinking about loop synths, and it would probably add to the experience a whole lot if sound was based a bit on how the hats and green were landing and such. Maybe also increase the speed of the drops or frequency a tiny bit on each multiplier wrap pass thing.

A very nice, simple game with surprising depth and nice polish. Can't think of anything I would improve, apart from perhaps some music. Well done!
