Blockstep by Amaury

[raw]
made by Amaury for LD 42 (JAM)

We're proud to deliver our very first game for LD42 ! Have fun and feel free to rate/comment our game it will really help us :) (and we will check your game but chhhhhhhht don't tell the others)

Block it!

Blockstep is a 1v1 arcade game taking place in a construction site. The goal is to block your rival in a 1x1 square using your building abilities. But be careful ! You must build 1 block in your area in order to build a set of 3 blocks in your opponent's.

The game is playable with 2 controllers and in Windows only (sorry). WebGL supports controllers very bad. You can also play with 1 controller + mouse/keyboard if you only have 1 controller :)

Bugs and fun

We took this occasion to learn Unity and C# development. All the assets were created from scratch, except the music.

Works quite randomly on chrome and firefox, but Windows is good.

We had a lot of fun gathering for this 72 hour long experience. It was a pretty cool first shot !

Really nice idea, it took my a little while to understand why placing 1 block places three on the other side. And for some reason i could not move to the right as a result i lost the first round. Really nice try, and good luck

I like your core idea of building block in your own terrain to block the enemy. Have to keep watching the other screen a lot of time :)
Your execution could be a little better though. It seems right now the best thing one can do is spam blocks while walking.

The gfx were pretty decent and well put together.

Nice idea, I couldn't properly test it because I don't have a player two around at the moment. I go the concept though. I think an improvement would be for the three blocks on the other side to be a random shape each time (like Tetris) or some penalty for dropping onto of where the opponent is currently stood. At the moment you can win with just two drops. Good effort.

@gajop @s-knight Thank you for your feed-backs, it's really helpfull =)

@gajop when we tried the game we were liked you just spamming blocks and see what happen but try to block your opponent and clean a bit of your area and @s-knight we know that, and because of the dead line we didn't had some bonus but we wanted to ad a chance to drop something like a super block when you break a block. And for the tetris blocks we don't want to had a part of aleatory in the game now it's just skill and i think its good like that but why not had a group of differents blocks

Too bad I have neither another person to play with nor a second controller. But I can still see the potential fun that this game may have. I haven't seen anything quite like this before so great job coming up with something innovative. I think you should consider writing some simple AI and uploading a postjam version so more people could at least have a taste of your game.

@detectivelosos thank you so much for your feed-back =).

We tried to create a simple IA, but in 3days it's really hard ^^ and don't worry were not gonna let down this project =).

And if you want, mouse and keyboard work too for this game, its harder and the mouse seems a bit glitchy, but you can play with this and a controler ;)

@marcovalekaz thank you =)

The theme wasn't the one that we expected so we are glad to hear that :)

@pamoy The problem with using a mouse is that it controls the same character as a controller. So you still have to do some kind of controller emulation for it to count as a second controller.
Glad to hear that you are continueing your work on this project. It could really become a fun little local multiplayer game to pass some time with your friends.

It would be great if it have an AI for one player, but I understand the time limit, It is awesome !

I loved the idea, really unique, and the art was pretty good. If polished and worked on more, this would be a really fun two or four player game. That win sound scared the hell out of me.

@c0nst4ntin thanks buddy we wanted a dynamic strong versus game and we are pretty happy of the result, @iballs yeah if we keep on working on it we will implements one but that's not the priority, thanks for the feedback
@pixelformedstudios hey we definitly will make Blockstep work on more asap, we already have some idea thanks to you guys on how to polish the game we will see what we can do, we wanted this sound to be played actually is more a loose sound than a win one ^^ but we really wanted it in.

@gamepopper thank you for playing our game :)

we know that an AI is welcomed ^^ but its really hard to create a good one for 1V1, even more in 3 days and we are just students, so we are certainly gonna do one, but its not our main project :( so you'r gonna wait a bit for playing solo sorry :(

Nice idea, though I wasn't able to test it properly since I do not have a player 2 at the moment. But I like the game and it fits the theme really well. Unique concept. :thumbsup:
