The Duality of Two Shitty Games by Sunti

[raw]
made by Sunti for LD 41 (JAM)

This is our entry for the Ludum Jam contest.

This game is a... well, I don't want to ruin the surprise of the game itself, so I think everyone should experience it as they go through it.

You can move with WASD or with arrow keys. Everything else is explained right into the game.

I really recommend playing this game 'dry', without expectations, and only continue reading after you've given it a go.

STOP READING NOW unless you've already played the game OR you don't mind some minor spoilers:

This game is a somewhat introspective and descriptive experience of my (Morg, programmer) and Sunti (Artist)'s turmoil as we tried to figure out how to best use the current LD theme in the early stages of brainstorming. In the end, we decided that 'genre' is a very broad word and did not necessarily need to be restricted to game genres. There are many genres, artworks, music, narrative, etc.

With that in mind, we opted to go for a mix between a somewhat shitty 'action' top-down RPG (a-la old school Zelda) and a simple platformer game. We also decided to separate these two elements clearly in the game as two different parts that obviously collide and conflict with each other. To further stress this, we decided to go with a somewhat hilarious and comical approach to the RPG genre, while maintaining a gritty and dark/horror-like atmosphere of a platformer (a-la Limbo or Hollow Knight). The soundtrack also reflects this for both parts of the game as they seamlessly intertwine with each other.

The main character is meant as a simple projection of the player experiencing the game, as we tried to reflect a reaction someone from outside the game might have upon a first playthrough.

Final Note from the authors: The game is short, and there was still a lot to be done, lots of content and lots of polishing but this is typical of the LDJam experience, I (Morg) wished I could've worked more on this, but I hope that with this said, y'all will enjoy the little we have provided :)

Let us know of any bugs or problems you have and we'll try to fix them to at least bring the game into a playable state.

Despite the theme and the very short time for the genre selected rpg + platform definetly based on long gameplay and fully and detailed map and environment I really appreciate the game and the mecanic.
I would definetly get it a chance in the long run for a game like this.

good idea to mix the 2 genre together, works well. perhaps could reduce the hitbox a little as it is too easy to hit spikes.
quite a contrast in the graphic style, maybe is intentional?

A pretty good use of theme actually! Though the idle enemy chatter was pretty funny. Could use more variety in the content, but naturally, with the time constraints and all, think you guys have done very well.
