Platform (LD42) by bentglasstube

[raw]
made by bentglasstube for LD 42 (COMPO)

Made in about eight hours because I had a wedding to go to this weekend. This is a really garbage game but I wanted to participate to keep the streak alive.

You are an astronaut in charge of protecting a platform from meteors. Move left and right and jump to bat the meteors away, if you fall off the platform it's curtains.

The music was made with Black Hole.

The art was made with Aseprite.

I enjoyed the style of the game. The flickering stars were a nice touch.

Another one I'm liking a lot! The art style and music are just awesome. The game is simple but well executed. I like that you can't change direction when you've jumped, but it nerfs jumping a bit too much because its easy to just always walk I think. Maybe an incentive to jump floating space junk to collect or dodge would add just that little bit extra to spice it up. That way players couldn't just camp a ledge near a support as well. Still, the simplicity is very nice and I love the audio and graphics, I'm impressed.

good idea, but if you stand on a pole you can get an infinitely high score (only got to 20 though)

I had planned to make you get more points for hitting the meteors at a height, to incentivize jumping, but I didn't find time. That's a really good idea about adding debris or something coming sideways that you have to collect/avoid.

I also tried in the last few minutes of the compo to add a feature where they meteors could bump you off the platforms so you couldn't just stand still, but it wasn't working in time, so yes, you can just stand still and rack up points. If your goal in life is to get the most points in my crappy game, then more power to you.

I played just a little bit and I already loved it. It made me remember myself at age 4 playing Arkanoid and a little DOS game on my old old old old PC :)

Would prefer it if I could control my character in mid air for some extent though. Too difficult to aim my jump right now :sweat_smile:

Amazing job for only 8 hours! It's minimal, but super fun to play :D Great you decided to participate in LD despite your tight schedule.

It reminded me a lot of Breakout, but instead of trying to hit a ball with a paddle the ball was flying at you and you were trying to intercept so the blocks were not destroyed.

I like the graphics theme. You said you didn't have much time to work on the game, so you focused on making simple crisp graphics that would allow you to focus on the mechanics of the game, and make it feel right. The addition of the sound effects and gentle background music are nice pieces of polish that allow you to make this feel like a complete game.

I will have to check out your older game if this what you can create in 8 hours.

@bentglasstube Hey thanks for the linux build! Unfortunatly it didn't run. The error message:
```
./ld42: symbol lookup error: ./ld42: undefined symbol: SDL_RenderSetIntegerScale
```

I guess it is because i have SDL2.0.4 on my system and SDL_RenderSetIntegerScale seems to have been introduced in 2.0.5. If you would like to make it easy for users you could ship the game with the libraries next to it and link the game with
```
-Wl,-rpath=.
```
This let's the program search for libraries in the local working directory.

Games so far conditioned me to avoid asteroids, so I was puzzled for a second on how to "defend" the platform.

You've done a great job for not even a 1/2 of a compo!

Still a nice entry despite the rush.A simple game with neat art style and gameplay.

hey @testlab thanks for the heads up. I always forget to test the linux packaging because I just build it from source. I will try to make something more usable.

I like knocking an asteroid sideways, where it kills half the platforms. Not that garbage considering the time constraints.

Quite a nice little game. I can definitely see there could be some improvements to it, but overall it's a positive experience playing it.

Fun small game! Interesting but well done game idea. Aesthetic and music really fits the minimalistic controls and game goal. Very nice as well that you're not using an out of the box engine :) Only missed a bit of development, different kinds of meteors (space garbage would've been interesting, or maybe a purple bust of napoleon or something :D Keep up the streak!

I had to move the asset files into a folder called "content" so the paths work, but then it ran on Linux
