Eight More Drinks, Please by rplnt

[raw]
made by rplnt for LD 40 (COMPO)

Take on the role of an eight-armed server in strange bar at the bottom of the ocean.

screen.jpg

Goals:

  • Don't drop a single drink, it's that simple!

Controls:

  • Octo knows the bar extremely well and can navigate it subconsciously
  • Press QWER ASDF to select a tentacle, you can also use Numpad keys
  • Use Left/Right arrow keys to balance the tray (character's PoV, not from the camera)
  • Esc/P to pause

Details:

  • Only trays with drinks will get out of balance by themselves
  • If you stabilize a tray, it will hold (at least for a while)
  • Dropping an empty tray will cost you a point
  • WebGL has bunch of visual glitches, but should work fine

Notes:

  • OSX/Linux builds hopefully tomorrow
  • Made with Blender, Unity3D, VisualStudio, Audacity, Paint.Net

Just played it. Poor octopus man has it hard. The sound design was good and the gameplay is easy to understand. Well done.

It can be tough to tell if left or right is the proper way to press to balance a tray but it was fun keeping them all up once I got it down.

Innovative game with nice execution. Difficulty curve is pretty nice, with each lap you get more and more drinks to take care of. I like graphics and general idea of underwater bar is pretty cool. My only complaint is that you have to restart from start every time, after a while first laps are just a minor obstacle to get to the more challenging parts. In overall pretty neat idea and interesting gameplay mechanics.

Hard game is hard. Fits the theme well I think and it's an interesting interpretation of it.

I struggled a bit with controls. Didn't read at the beginning that only left/right mouse works, so I was trying to use up/down and was surprised it didn't work :)

Nice! Cool interpretation of the theme. Graphics and mood are really nice. It really feels coherent. It starts off a bit slow, but after 5 rounds it really picks up the pace. It would be nice to have checkpoints after maybe 5 rounds(?). Nice 3D models btw!

Well done!

Wooo, pretty cool game man! Took me a while to understand what to do (well, 3 seconds after loosing :P)

The game looks awesome and it feels solid, congrats on the entry!

Really good Graphics. No music, I feel sad for clients, only the sound of glass. Hard to play for me.
I don't have understand how to win yet. Innovative for sure, good potential. This Pub need more ambience :)

Pretty cool idea, but damn it is hard. I missed some background music.

Well done! It's a fun but frustrating game to play, my best score was 6. Some things you could improve with more time would be more sounds for different things instead of mostly ambience sound, maybe a turtorial with a slower rising diffculty and some more difficulty balancing (haha). Also being able to restart with the press of any of the buttons that are used to play it would be nice.

Nicely done my dude! Had fun playing it but sometimes it got a bit confusing because one has to balance using Left and Right arrow key but some drinks I expected to use Up and Down because they tilted in that direction.
Very nice!

Hey there! Liked the concept of the game, using only left/right to balance the dish was a bit confusing though, sometimes the glass was about to fall in a different direction and it was hard to guess the button I needed to push. Looks like it could be a cool small arcade game.

Cool game. Liked the idea. It fits the theme perfectly. But too hard for me, but I'm probably just a noob, haha.

It did not start in Chromium on Ubuntu. But the idea looks very nice and the graphics on the screeshot look sweet.

Fantastic idea, but gameplay is quite frustrating :( It gets very hard really quickly, I loved the game but only managed to get 5 points... To be constructive, I think it could be improved in two ways:

1. Left/Right arrow keys to balance trays might work relative to camera and not relative to character.
2. A few more drink drops (3 for example) might be allowed, and not game over at 1 drop.

Anyway, graphics and sound are very good for the tight timetable of the compo. Well done!

@naca completely agree. I had trouble with rotations in general, so opted for easier single-axis route. The addition of points and game over was done in the last hour, I wish I would have more time to playtest and realize it. There's also missing "win" condition, you only collect points.

@rohezal Sorry to hear that, I only tried it on mac and windows. I have AA enabled so I think that might be the issue (just a guess)? I can't produce a linux build right now... maybe in couple of days if I don't forget.

Of course thanks to everyone playing, rating, and especially commenting!

I love the graphics!

The difficulty is rather high - I failed with just 15 points.

I couldn't run it in Safari (only text, no 3D), but it ran fine in Firefox. I found a bug (twice) when the octopus started running in circle in the corner farthest from the bar until i dropped a plate...

Nice take on the topic and well executed!

The left/right being on relation with character's point of view confuses me a lot. Good game idea and use of theme. The models (specially the characters) are funny!

14 points was my high score on your game.

+1 to the left/right confusion - often I would mess up because I wouldn't remember which way (left/right) was which with the plates, but I suppose that's kind of the point with this game?
Graphics and polish are awesome. Sounds were great but some lounge music in the background would've really completed it.

Really enjoyed the concept. Graphics and audio were great, and really helped to set the ambiance of the bar. Found the game very difficult -- not just directionality but also when/how much effect I was having on each drink plate. Great take on the theme!

Nice Idea but it was very hard to play (at least for me). The problem is that I had a hard time following multiple arms with my eye so I could only notice that a tray is about to fall when it is nearly about to fall. On the other hand, I think this is what makes the game challenging so may be I just need more training. The graphics and sound effects are great. Great job.

The idea and interpretation of the theme are amazing! graphics too. It's really frustating to do the work! frustrating but fun. altought maybe it could be a bit less difficult. the constant andvance and rotate turns the game a little confusing. Anyways superb entry! Congrats.
