Running out of Memory Space by RilleP

[raw]
made by RilleP for LD 42 (COMPO)

Running out of memory space is a puzzle game where every move is registered in a memory stick. The player has one or more memory sticks, each with a limited amount of space. When all the memory is used, no more moves can be made before undoing previous moves. Go through multiple levels with increasing difficulty, unlocking doors with keys and maybe unlocking two doors with the same key.

  • Move with Arrow keys
  • Undo moves with ctrl-z
  • Change memory with 1, 2, 3
  • Restart current level with R

I liked the intro levels that were teaching you how to use everything. The sound is good! I got stuck on a level that seemed unbeatable, but I enjoyed the time I spent with it. It is a simple game with an interesting mechanic. Good Job!

@mccarlp Thanks! All levels are beatable in one way or another. Some might require thinking outside the box.

This is a fun concept! It's kind of easy to get stuck while you're figuring out the game in the first few levels. I ended up guessing (nice) that R was a reset button. Probably worth putting that on the page for other players!

I tend to agree with @mccarlp ... the intro levels gave a good intro, but the very next level, it was nearly impossible to do ... and not at all obvious. The average player will probably give up too quickly. Has potential though ... I'd explore a few iteration with friends.

This was a pretty fun game. The rules are simple, but the levels eventually get quite challenging. An extra intro level might have been good to highlight the importance of undo-ing. Design is simple yet pleasant. Nice game, good job.

No way of restarting the level once you are stuck !!

Fun concept! One of the more innovative games from the jam, it's great that it requires some lateral thinking thats very unique to this game. Well done!

Great game, but maybe a lower difficulty curve would have been better, easing the player into harder levels. I do understand that it was a short game jam though. Impressive for only 48 hours!

Quite a fun and smart take on the theme, only problem was that I got stuck too early. It really does force you to think about the next move and when you should swap memory banks though, which is a good design. :)

Really creative use of the mechanics! I agree with the others that, for a puzzle game, there needs to be one or two more intro levels that allow the player to easily discover what can be accomplish with the Undo move (personally, I was only able to understand how to advance past the 3rd level thanks to the GIF showing the solution, only then did it click in my mind).

A really clever mechanic/use of the theme, and I liked the level music. :)

Really smart mechanics!! It's so hard to break through some levels... I just can't get idea to clear the game... Well played!!

Nice inovation and creativity on the theme. I got through a few levels but one level with 2 doors and keys was a bit to hard for me, i might just be dumb tho. Simple but very clever game!

Great idea and good job making use of that idea with the puzzle designs!
Controls are a bit odd, having to go back to your mouse at the end of each level for no reason gets annoying quick.

This is a pretty great concept for a puzzle game.

Like others have said, theres a huge jump in puzzle-difficulty from the 'obvious' tutorial levels to figuring things out for yourself, but given its a compo entry I'm actually impressed you bothered with the tutorial levels rather than just jumping into the meat & bones of the puzzling, rather than being upset there weren't more 'filler' tutorials to teach you about stacking commands and swapping memory cards.

I really enjoyed the central mechanic! I definitely had an "a-ha" moment when I saw how to juice/game the mechanics =). Would love to see a restart level button!

Very cool concept. It reminded me a little bit of Braid but turn based instead. I got up to the level with two gold keys, but that one stumped me. The character was really cute and music was well done. Maybe a hint would help on the later levels.
