Overtime by Dvlv

[raw]
made by Dvlv for LD 43 (COMPO)

A hand-drawn story game which forces the player to decide between working long hours to pay off their debt or spending time with their family.

About

This is my first Ludum Dare attempt.

There's a lot more story than gameplay. The theme lead me to an idea which ended up being more narrative than interactive.

Controls

Press Spacebar to advance text when you see "[Space]" in the bottom-right.

Minigames have instructions before they start, but are usually controlled by moving the mouse up and down, or using the arrow keys.

Very engaging story, I played through 3 endings so far and they all made me sad. Some work can be done with displaying the hand drawn graphics on screen, stretching and jagged edges bothered me a few times. Good game, fits the theme well.

Also, if you want people to play your game, then I highly suggest playing, rating, and leaving comments on other games. My previous game was completely unnoticed for a week until I did so.

You did a nice job at playing to my heartstrings - the story was very engaging. I really liked the variety of mini-games. I got stuck on the trash game, though, the trash was just going too fast for me to catch it all with my keypad. Overall, well done.

Cool story and writing, lost all my friends in the process but overtime paid well at the end for my family! Nice to see others story-based games over here!

I liked the mini games inside and all the decisions you must made in a narrative game (even if read in english is not too easy for me).
When you drive the car, the best strategy seems to be on the top, nobody is driving there :P

Love the story and really captured the sense of "Sacrifices Must be made" really well.
Reminds me of games like Florence in the way you combined the storytelling with minigames. Hard to write all of those minigames in a single game jam weekend. Very ambitious!
The story was well told and I enjoyed making the small decisions along the way which kept me engaged.

Just a heads up to allow people to play your game more easily : for the web version, rather than providing a download link, please consider using a service like itch.io, which will host your web version for free and allow other people to play it directly in their browser.

What an interesting story, and the art work is so charming. Honestly, is a bit to sad for my like. Also, it would have been nice to have some soft music playing underneath. The silence make it even sadder haha.

But great job overall!!!

The story was, surprisingly captivating? I wouldn't expect a story about a white collar worker trying to balance his work and family life to be interesting, but it definitely was. I loved the different mini-games you played on different days, and I really liked how when the game ended, you got a really fleshed out explanation of what effects your decisions had. The artwork was also really charming and it don't think it mattered, since the story was so great.

Great job on this game! I can't believe you made it in 48 hours, it's really impressive!

I liked the idea very much! The story was interesting and it got me in. I missed some sort of indicator of how much money did I earn yet, so I would make more informed decisions when planning over time. Some background music would also help to focus on the story. Minigames were cool, tho I would like if the control scheme was more unified instead of switching from mouse to arrow keys. In general very nice work!

Thanks for all of the feedback so far!

I've taken @evanaellio 's suggestion and created an itch.io page for the html version. The game itself has not changed.

Great game.
Really enjoyed it, but the level with driving the car can be "skipped" easily if you drag the mouse down on the half lane. 5/5 from me tho

The web version just shows me "index out of bounds" on a black screen:

@notime4games Sorry to hear that. I can't recreate the issue on my end.

I wasn't expecting this level of reality in a LD game, sad, but very heartfelt. Great work. and very charming art style.

A really great story and a nice take on the theme. I found this game very refreshing as it is so different from all the other typical entries. Even though there isn't much gameplay, the story makes up for it. I also liked that there were multiple endings to the game. Great job!

Story is well written and engaging. Graphics and sound could be better, but I think they're good enough to set the mood. Congrats for making multiple mini-games!

Wow, this is a terrific concept - great use of the theme. I'm impressed you had time to get all the minigames working along with the main storyline. Nice work!

I really enjoyed playing this. As many others have said, the story was incredibly engaging. Furthermore, I liked playing the mini-games which, although quite basic, added another dimension to the game. This was very well accomplished - great job!
