Trophy Defense by August1413

[raw]
made by August1413 for LD 41 (COMPO)

In the year XXXXXXX squared you win like the BIGGEST racing competition in the known galaxy with a generic looking car from the early 21 century. But your arch-rival Mr. I.D.G.A.F. was so bothered by this that he tries to steal your trophy with drones. Now you must defend your rightful trophy on your rightful private island on the alien-named planet Whocares, since this conflict even endangers your family honour. This may be THE most important task yet humanity and other unnamed extraterrestrials have EVER witnessed.

You control a blue car. Accelerate by pressing W, steer left and right with A and D, S stops you instantly. To shoot the drones press Space whilst targeting them with the turret, by pressing the Arrow Right and Arrow Left , or J and K Keys. If the drones manage to carry the trophy off of the island, you lose. You can touch the trophy if it as been dropped by a shot drone, to return it to its initial position. If you manage to drive three laps whilst defending your trophy, you win the game and save the universe from total destruction. The whole universe.

The game mixes the genres racing and shooting. Please excuse my mediocre at best... I mean awful art, I really tried my best.BackgroundPlaceholder.png I hope you enjoy my first submission to the ludum dare event.

Well I stopped them 2 times, then they got gridlocked and didn't move - so I guess I win!

Using arrow keys for the turret is very unintuitive and far away from WASD, why not pick closer keys?

J and K are useable now too!

It got really annoying because your vehicle respawns every time you touch a wall. The overall idea is kinda interesting, but mouse control for the turret would be so much better.

This could be a really fun game with some extra work put into the race track! I'd love to see curved roads, or at least only get slowed down by hitting walls rather than reset. I imagine that would make the game too easy though! Strangely enough it was easier to keep the car moving at full speed at all times, stopping and starting lurches the car forward and you end up off the road! Good job with your entry, keep making games!

I like the idea behind it. It was neat being a moving turret to protect the trophy. I do feel like the combination of the respawn on player collision with walls and the super tight track layout made the gameplay a lot more difficult than it needed to be. Great job nonetheless!

I was dissappointed to realize this wasnt the greatest game of all time.

The player was too small, and the turret rotation too sensitive, making it hard to aim.
And no sound effects.

Now, if you really wanna know what the worlds best game is, you should check MY game out!
Its a combination of farming and stealth! Wow!

Fun arcadey challenge! I like the concept and pacing. Biggest criticism is that it's difficult to see where the turret is currently pointed. I think the walls might be better with a collision than a respawn at the start line, but I suspect that was chosen for ease of implementation so I won't nitpick further. Keep working and building your skills, and you'll be making great stuff in no time.

The whole restart thing really bugs me off. The game would be great if I hadn't to restart it every time I hit a wall, or at least if the turret was controlled by mouse. Still, a good idea, thank you for your entry!

Reset at the touch of the wall is kinda harsh but I guess it's true to the arcade feel. It's not too bad if you try not to rush though. I won after finishing just one lap?? Is this a bug or did you change it? I also tried backing and crossing the finish line that way but it didn't count :P. Some sound would've been nice. There are simple sound generators out there (like BFXR) that I wish people would use more as it adds a lot to games without hardly any effort.

@silkworm_sweatshop Thanks for the tips! yeah the system for counting laps is a bit broken, because it uses a counter. Ive never heard of that programme before but Ill take a look! Thanks for telling me!

Neat little game, cool idea. This game was pretty tough because running into the walls immidieately sent you back to the start line. Also it was a bit difficult to control the turret and driving at the same time without running into walls. I would also like to see some benefits to racing a full lap around the track i.e. power or speed upgrades. Congratulations on making a complete game in 48 hours!

Pretty interesting idea but controls are messy and you could make better graphics :)

Resetting when hitting the wall was my only problem with this. Way too unforgiving with how this game controls. Other than that its a pretty cool concept. Good job!
