Idle Game X Shooter

Take your weapons to the desert and start shooting stuff to get gold. More gold means more upgrades, more upgrades means more gold.

screenshot_04 resized.png

Controls

  • WASD and arrow keys to move the character
  • Mouse to aim and mouse button to shoot

Tips & comments

  • In the first level, no enemies, just shoot tumbleweed and cactuses. It's a good training ground to try the controls.
  • I recommend to always try to upgrade the Gold so that each kill give you even more money.
  • Before going to the next level, try to upgrade few things if you can.
  • If you die, you lose your money but not your upgrade
  • The last gun (one after the shotgun) is not the most powerful one (I screw up the balancing by making the shotgun OP at the last minute), so choose wisely before upgrading to it

Having piles upon piles on money explode everywhere is IMMENSELY satisfying, well done! This was really fun to play, all it needs is some old western type background music!

Ohh this is great! I was so into the shooting, that I oversaw the +gold Update! :D after that it was going fast! Really great. Liked the sounds. A cool western music would have been great:) Overall great game! thanks!

A nice top-down shooter with a satisfying money mechanic, well done! What I'm missing though is the "_Idle_".

Funnily enough the last gun you get is way worse than what came before it, so you should probably switch them around. It's pretty solid otherwise, good job!

Edit: Awesome thanks! The game had a very good feel to it and was really satisfying to play. I think I would have preferred having to pick up the coins instead of them flying towards you.

I also did a love2D project so I looked into the source code for a bit. I'm amazed you managed to write that much! I think my game was less than 300 lines.

@coldmoose you can shoot the tumbleweed and cactuses to get gold. When you have enough gold you can buy more upgrades, buy a pass for the next level etc.

I realized that I didn't add more info on the page since the submission when I wrote a short blurb and went to bed. I will edit the page with some instructions.

This was super satisfying to play. The gameplay is really solid and feels addicting right from the beginning with upgrading how many coins you can get. The hitboxes on the skulls though felt a little small compared to their sprites though, I could usually shoot straight through the top of their head or the bottom of their head. Only shots directly at the middle of the skulls were counted, although it didn't seem to be as big of a problem on the larger slower skulls. If I had any other feedback, it'd be to taper off the high end frequencies for the coin sound, because after I upgraded the amount of money a few times and was getting tons of coins constantly, it was a lot of really high pitched noise all at once. Overall though I actually liked it a lot. Nice job!!

This was super addictive. I loved the little physics/effects on the money dropping, and the different tiers of money was especially satisfying. I love loved the little "bounce" that objects/enemies have when you hit them! My only nitpicks would be that the hit boxes on the enemies and cacti felt a little off, and I would've liked to have seen a walking animation or something on the player! Overall, great entry though.

Really enjoyed this. Accidentally upgrading from the shotgun is a sad time though!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ld41-6 is my game, if you get a chance to take a look that would be cool :)

Great game, one of my favorites so far! It has a very nice feel to it and it seems quite polished.

I had the impression that the second to last gun was stronger than the last one just because you had some spread and could kill several enemies with one shot.

Nicely done! I read your post-mortem too, and I think it pays to have done the animation the way you did, the easing functions really do look good, especially with the simple art style, it 'feels' great! The concept is fairly simple, but the quality and polish pays off, and you've made a really fun game! If I had one wish, it would be the ability to jump back down a level, because I think i bit off more than I could chew, especially when you lose ALL of your money when you die :P Good game!

Oh man, you absolutely nailed the game feel. All those particles, screen shake...really, really good. I spent like 10 minutes in the tutorial level just because it was so much fun shooting and getting the money.

Superb work!

A very good game, one of the best ld41 games I played. the feel was there (idle shooter), it surely fits the theme very well, I also spend so much time in the tutorial level because the shooting was great and of course greed :). dropping of coins and money are a blast. love it. good job

Damn that was a blast! So satisfying to see all that moolah drop :)
I kept playing until the 5-6th level but had to stop because the screen shake got too much - I'd suggest putting a clamp on it lol

Very nice game (and idea) but very frustrating: the last gun is worse than the previous, its reload time is way too long (especially in the last levels where you're easily surrounded by quick skulls, it's almost impossible to gather enough money to upgrade anything). But the idea is really good and could bring a really interesting change in the idle genre.

This game is really well done and I had a blast playing it. The juice in this game is so satisfying... the sounds, the screen shake, the cash collection, well done!

I have a few critiques and possible bugs:

- The font for your cash and the upgrades font seems to be pixelated. Not sure if it matters, but I was playing the mac version.
- One small gripe, at the beginning, I kept on thinking the "bullets left" indicator was a pause button. This obviously went away, but just a tiny problem at the beginning.
- If you wander out of bounds, the game seems to freeze up and you can't get back in. Maybe lock the character to the screen edges.
- I love the screen shake in general, but it is difficult to read the upgrade menu when that's happening toward the end. Perhaps play around with keeping the upgrade buttons stationary.
- The skull enemies can be hard to see over the diamond loot. Maybe change the color of one of them?

My favorite touch you added though was the black overlay with the time slow down as you hover over the menu. I can think of SO many games that would benefit from this feature. Especially intense fast paced tower defense games.

Overall an incredible submission, great work.

@jackrugile thanks for the detailed feedback. I was aware of most your points before submitting (except the menu screenshake which I actually didn't realized, strange) and all of them are pretty straightforward to solve. But I simply had to prioritise because of a lack of time.

Usually I release an new version to solve these kinks but this time I decided to leave it as it was for jam because I don't like have a jam version and a updated version on my itch.io page.

Pretty good game! The game got so difficult it was unplayable - I needed more run speed, but the skull enemies would just chase me down and kill me before I could do anything. Maybe make the penalty for dying a bit less than losing all of your money, so players that didn't go a good tech route can still progress in the game. Otherwise, this was still overall pretty fun to play.
