While this isn't my first game, it's my first game jam prototype where much of the intended design actually made it in the game. In addition, it's Martin's first video game and first game jam participation! Despite it's unfinished state, there's lots for us to be proud of. We hope to release a more polished version by the end of August, which you can expect on Team Giga's itch page.

Thanks for playing and rating!

Update v1.1

  • Fixed UI bugs where the health/engine bars were too big, and the altimeter was half covered up.
  • Fixed screen resolution bug where the play area was skewed and the left/right border collisions were closer inward, resulting in bounce-back in the middle of the screen.
  • Updated UX to better reflect player actions.
  • Tweaked debris values and spawn rate to increase challenge over time.
  • Added a Victory condition.
  • Balanced gun: degrades engine during use and disabled when engine breaks down.
  • Uploaded a downloadable Windows, Mac and Linux version.

* _NOTE: It is recommended to download the game if you prefer fullscreen, which is available at the itch.io link below. (It has a more accurate cursor, too!)_ *

Good entry! Great graphics & animations, the ambiance is good, the game is well finished. I would try to improve a bit the controls, maybe add a timer to try to improve from a game to another, and finally, allow to restart from the game over screen. Keep up the good work! :rocket:

@nidup Thanks for the feedback! It's honestly been overwhelming to throw this together in such a short time considering I've had zero experience with Unity and I've only dealt with C# maybe once before, but I really enjoyed myself and the end product! I'm aware of the inability to restart as well as a lack of initial game menu, but, admittedly, I simply ran short on time :c It was a very impromptu decision to participate and I had some arranged plans IRL throughout the competition. I'm actually very surprised we got this much done haha.

Music is really cool, graphics are simple, but overall style is awesome. Gameplay become a bit repetitive after you master the controls, but I had some fun playing it. After I reached end of the level, though, music has changed but nothing happened. I believe you just haven't got enough time to add some kind of ending. Anyway, great game!

@jima Thank you! Haha yeah we didn't have any time left to make 2-3 more stages like we wanted (~1 min of gameplay each), so we made the one stage we did have 3 minutes long heh. If you reach max altitude, you've pretty much won but there's nothin that notifies you or stops the game. Much of the issues are def acknowledged but solutions aren't there just due to lack of time. ^^; Will def be uploading an improved version later on, seeing how it was so much fun to make and play. Thanks again for the feedback!!!

Like the gameboy art style and the game was a lot of fun. Playing on a machine with at touch-pad, instead of a mouse, does make it a bit more challenging though. Good job

@johngun Impressive! ;) We talked about using WASD keys initially, but in remembering similar games that control via WASD, it feels like crap and using a mouse felt better-- even on mousepad. _i salute u for ur achievement_

Great entry! I love the oldschool GameBoy artwork -- especially the explosion when you crash looks really well polished. Took me a second to get the hang of it, but once I did the controls felt tight and the I had a ton of fun. Thanks for sharing!

I liked how you switch up the thrust forward with right click instead of WASD. Refreshing!

I loved the art style. The gameplay is intense and fast paced. It's pretty hard to master the controls but when you get the hang of it, it's very addicting!

Nice graphics and audio. Game a little bit difficult when playing with magic mouse. It can click only 1 button at the time. :')

Hello guys, the broken engine mechanic is awesome, it makes the game so much more challenging.

The game has really good feeling to it! Well done!

Great entry, I really liked how repairing your engine also repaired your health a bit, giving you an incentive to use up your engine as fast as possible. The graphics and soundtrack were both really great, and suited the game perfectly.
Some things that could be improved would be that there could be more feedback when your engine is broken, maybe the bar could like vibrate or something. There were a few times when I found myself trying to thrust, only to realize my engine was broken and I needed to repair it. I think there was some smoke and a sound that played, but for me that wasn't sufficient.
Also, this is kind of nitpicky, but I couldn't find any reason to not be firing, so holding down left mouse button was just kind of a chore. Always firing with no player input could be an improvement.
Other than those two points, it was good fun and as I've already mentioned the art style and sound effects really made it.

@oab : Thank you! Sorry heh, we didn't really anticipate magic mouse use :X Hope you had a good time though!

@chao : Thanks so much for the feedback! The issues you had are def something came up in my sessions too. Will be looking at engine-break feedback and bullet balancing today, as well as a victory condition. :)

@chao That is some **solid** feedback, thanks a ton! I have spoken with my collaborator about a bit more of a visual cue on the engine breaking, and even health depleting, and we both agree that that would be a great addition. As a personal preference, I've always enjoyed the press-to-fire bullet-hell feeling, just in the event that there's too much clutter on the screen I can always stop firing to clear it up a bit, though I do understand your point of view and will be looking for some in-between mechanic to implement :)

Things I liked
- clean graphics
- clear goal
- intresting mechanices

Things for improvement
- music gets grating after a few tries
- didn't seem to be any reason to not hold down shoot (so why not have it auto fire)

Very nice and polished game. It's quite fun to just navigate the debris even if there's not much else to do. Would be great to have some pickable powerups - even more reason to fly around which is super fun. Graphics and sounds are nice, but most importantly input feels right. However, I didn't find it useful at all to shoot.

@mortus : Thank you! As much as we'd like to add other mechanics like powerups (which btw there's an audio file we made for it lmao), per Ludum Dare rules we can't. :(

As for the shooting: That's actually a bit of an add-on heh. A couple of those debris types were actually meant to be enemies that can shoot and track the player, so destroying them via shooting was the best option (we had 3 diff gun modes ready to implement). Ofc we can't add new mechanics like another enemy type in a post-jam release, so shooting is mostly an artifact of what we wanted to do. To balance the shooting post-release, we accentuated it by having shooting use engine durability, trading off plane control for some health. Plus, if debris is headed directly your way, shooting can help subvert the inevitable ;) Hopefully it's enjoyable to shoot things at the very least!

@jason-kennedy : Thanks for the feedback! We did balance the shooting since release, so hopefully that's an improvement. As for the music-- yeah that'll happen unfortunately haha. Can't be helped much, sorry!

I love the visuals but the game is way too hard to control for me.
🎤 FlyingMeta
08. Aug 2017 · 17:00 UTC
@ganbaregameskyle : No worries, it's not you :P It was difficult to balance since we couldn't get the enemies we wanted in there.

In the previous version you could basically win by ignoring the gun and staying mostly immobile in one area, so we increased the speed and spawn rate of projectiles. Those changes resulted in it being really difficult and basically shutting out a chunk of players who don't like the grind of getting better at a game by dedicating more time (especially since its a game jam and most ppl won't).

Thanks for giving the game a try! :)

Great entry! Not sure if you noticed or not, but using the spacebar to shoot had no effect on the engine (where the left mouse caused the engine to drain), so while I felt like I was cheating, it was the only way I played ;) Made it to the last notch before the top - stopped before I threw my computer out the window. Really addictive game - nice work!

@roguenoodle : Thanks for catching that! Been using left click the whole time so I never caught that bug, whoops. :P

YEAHH that's about as far as I got a number of times. FEELS GREAT TO DIE, DONT IT AHAHAHA but yeah playing this again after a week or so its way too hard lmao we'll take a look at that

Great ! But the game is so addictive, especially with the music ! It was so hard to win ! I tried a lot but never did it ! Really hard ! The graphics and the color pallete was cool ! The player was so small, but his explosion animation was so big, and I liked that !

It is very cool! I put 5 stars almost in all ratings:) As the game progress it would be nice to add:

1. increase the number of falling objects
2. more variety in objects
