Game Summary

Defend the world from missile. Amass money doing so. Build turrets using the money to better defend the world from the oncoming attacks. When you're properly defended, build nuclear centrifuges to win the game!

My take on the theme was you play as North Korea on a small world being attacked by everyone. The idea was that you'd build nuclear centrifuges to create a nuclear warhead. The game would then end with the warhead being fired, failing and turning round, blowing up the planet. Didn't manage to that done in the end. Need to work on my timing.

This is my 8th Ludum Dare. You can view my other games here. http://ludumdare.com/compo/author/cryogenesis/#hidepopup

Technical Summary

I was supposed to submit this to the compo, didn't manage to get enough done in the first day to be able to finish in time. For some reason I thought it was a good idea to write the whole thing from scratch. Turns out it was a total time waste.

Game runs best on a fast CPU, preferably faster than 2.3Ghz. The first day, I spent writing the world generator that uses perlin noise to generate the terrain. Then I wrote a software renderer that'd draw the planet pixel-by-pixel, and the objects on it / around it. This is why the game's so low-res. If you zoom into some of the objects the pixel-art is moderately detailed though.

Written in pure Java, using the in built Swing libraries. Art made using GIMP. Sound, using FL Studio and SFXR.

Cool game! I love your art style and music, good job on writing the whole thing yourself too. Had fun playing :)

Nice game, the graphics and music are good. Using the W/S keys for zooming in and out felt a bit strange. I really liked the concept.

The zooming in to see to aim and zooming out to find missiles was cool, but there were a lot of times where it felt impossible to shoot one missile and get to the next one on the opposite side of the planet. Being able to add towers is a cool features. On Mac the controls sometimes wouldn't work for a period of time.

Nice concept. I think the challenge could use a bit of tuning. In the end I found myself pretty zoomed out to be able to see what was going on where. The sounds were a bit annoying with time, and could it be that the planet hit sounds and the missile destruction sounds are the same? Maybe use different ones.

A simple and fun game. The music is really great. I am not a fan of the art style, but this does not mean it is bad. And I would have preferred a in-game tutorial. But overall a good LD Game.

I like your game. Kudos for building from scratch. I basically built a game engine before the competition and just did the jam. The game is really well made. My first time playing I didn't realize that you could build turrets. After that I didn't realize that the grey cylinders were centrifuges, not better turrets. If you want to develop this game further I would suggest making that distinction clearer. A tutorial period of time would be beneficial as well. Overall it is a great game!

Cool game, love the art, not sure if the pixelisation was intended but it's pretty cool

This is excellent! I love the zooming in and out. The way the tank moves over the terrain is very satisfying (I remember trying to do something like that years ago and I failed!!!) The sound is excellent and the music is not too annoying. I love the added element of building turrets as the difficulty starts to ramp up. If I had to nit-pick then I would say:

* It would be nice if, when you zoom out, the world was centered in the middle of the screen so you can see equally in all directions.
* When you bring up the build menu, it would be nice if, when you exit, the zoom didn't reset

Oh, and I love how the planet looks like an archery target - very apt!

A superb game!

Neat game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)
