Heart and Soul by devbat8712

Welcome to Heart and Soul!

This is my entry to the Ludum Dare 44 Jam. I finished on Compo pace, but I had to submit as a Jam entry due to some of the public domain resources I used. Check below this post or in credits.txt for credits.

~~The game can be found on my website~~ or below. Just extract the zip somewhere and run "run.bat" (for Windows) or "run.sh" (for Linux). No OSX support, sorry.

EDIT: my site is having issues, I switched to a Google drive link.

If you're on Windows it may pop up a warning about SmartScreen. Just click more details, then run anyway.

Also, Avast! is a piece of garbage antivirus that will probably complain about it being a rare file or whatever, and not run it. Here's the virustotal that shows it's clean.

The gameplay is explained as soon as you exit the title screen. That's all you get. It's much more fun to discover the game for yourself rather than have everything spoon-fed to you, right?

The controls are fairly simple. In the city view, left-click to place your selected building. Right-click erases buildings. Use the mouse-wheel to select a building.

Hopefully you have fun with the game! May the best man win.

Now that's an interesting take on the town building genre. The title screen sure didn't lie - it is the dark souls of city sims! I really liked how all the text (except for the self-care minigame) was hand written - it gave the game a nice, casual feel. Which completely doesn't match the CARNAGE that's going on on my keyboard while playing it! The whole townbuilding aspect got me confused - how exactly should I keep the people happy and employed when my town has a 100% crime rate? Ah, I'll figure it out later. Overall, the idea has potential and the base game is kinda fun but it has a long way to go!

Bonus points for that self-care minigame though, everything about it is perfect!

@corny Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, the town building was a little bit rushed I think. Basically you have to place A LOT of police stations lol. And if you go too long without doing anything, the city begins to stagnate, which in retrospect I probably should have shown on the UI.

Glad you liked it overall, I do plan to work on it more outside of the jam when I have time!

I didn't quite like the townbuilding aspect since I found it quite confusing what each icon did. But it fits in well with the theme.
The reconnect with your essence minigame is hilarious. It's easily my favorite part of the game.
Overall, good job.

Reconnect with your assets. Cool little typing game included. Strange but entertaining, didnt quite get how to switch the buildings, I think. Nice.
