Intergalactic Inhabitance Mission by NNNIKKI

Overview

Thanks to light speed technology, 3D-printable domes and baby designers, we can start taking the universe by storm. We are able to inhabit every planet we see. It is up to you, Pilot, to visit as many planets as possible. Beware though, since black holes are everywhere and will try to consume you. Good luck!

Controls

W / Up arrow key - Accelerate A D / Left and Right arrow keys - Turn left/right E - Inhabit planet Space - Show the nearest black hole Esc - Pause game 3.png

I suggest downloading "iim-game-2.zip" instead of "iim-game.zip".

@scott-purcival That was the tutorial. Start the game again to play the actual game. I will make a post-jam version which moves you to the game automatically.

SURPRISE BLACK HOLE. Really enjoyed your game, the only thing I would change is to not point at colonised planets.

@ravenflame Okay! I will do that right now in fact!

13. Aug 2018 · 12:27 UTC
Neat!

The cursor sometimes pointed off-screen (it's a bit funny that you can fly out of the galaxy tbh) especially in the beginning, but most of the time it worked fine :D What are those colonists -doing- to the planets tho :O they spread out a bit and then THE WHOLE PLANET DISAPPEARS. Anyway, got eaten by a black hole! Nice work.

lool @wolfrug i made the planets disappear to not clutter the screen. and also I think that the things they build don't really look like domes:

but i decided to go with it
thanks for the feedback! im kinda exhausted so ill just go and watch some more Danny Gonzalez videos on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S whilest eating cookies.

Nice job. Controlling the spaceship has a very nice feeling to it. I think the black holes are bit too strong. The graphics are pretty well done.

The tutorial crashed and then I couldn't find a way how to play it... So now I don't know how to play the game, for example can't figure out what is doing "space" =D Can you please write controls here? I would wait for it and play it afterwards :)

Love the interface for menu screen, pause, and new highscore, with the alien symbols. Catchy tune and smooth controls that is quite intuitive! Neat game :)

Everyone, thanks for the great support!!!
@maoap W to accelerate, A/D to turn, E to inhabit planet, Space to see the nearest black hole. I guess it would be a good idea to write them down on the game page.
@rexpeppers Okay, I'll make one now. Unfortunately I can't make builds for other platforms, sorry.

Nice job. At the start I didn't get the black hole, but after some runs I got it.
The design was very minimalist but the controls were good. I think more work on the game design itself would be welcome (but LD is a hard jam xD).
Keep improving, nice work

I re-streamed this when I wasn't so tired to give it a proper run through. I really enjoyed the mechanics and the physics of the black holes. I think the animation/effect of colonizing could be a little faster (I was eventually just running out of the area before the planets faded out or had bubble stuff put on them). Here is a link to the re-stream of your game:

Really like what you have done with your game. It genuinely feels like it came from an 80's arcade. The sound design was on point and I really liked the graphics/aesthetics. The game-play felt good. took a couple of tries to get the hang of it. through me off the you needed forward momentum to turn :P. I feel like it would work really well on mobile. The only issue is that the black holes are not obvious enough leading to pretty unfair deaths. and they either don't appear enough or don't get big enough fast enough to be seen a a threat. I was able to play for quite a while without encountering a single one, and that is without knowing where they actually where. Other than that really enjoyed the game and will likely play it again in the future.

@paulhocker "iim-game-2.zip" is the post compo version. I don't see how you would die. All you need to do is go upwards and then turn right. Also, if you're stuck in the tutorial, you can press Esc to pause, then Q to quit, and the click Play again to play the game.

Overall, a solid compo entry, well done.

The Good

Controls are clear and the in game tutorial is not intrusive.
Objective is clear, no confusion in “what do I have to do”
Nice music track, gives the “lost in space” vibe
Black hole mechanic adds an extra edge.

What could be improved

There is a certain “Screen limit” that you kind of just find out when it kills you.
You go enough south for example and you eventually run out of the screen and die. This is never really warned and just kind of “happens”.
The player ship (in window mode) does not remain in the center of the screen but rather moves towards the direction he is moving (particularly noticeable when moving north or south) which causes some classic 90s “spawn deaths” aka something spawns and I cant avoid it because I couldn’t see it.
Black hole is an interesting mechanic but one that is never explained and only thing I can get by intuition is to get as far away as possible. May be enough, maybe not.
Background is tiled yet is not designed to be such, resulting in “square” after “square” being painfully visible. It’s a compo game and part of a jam so it may be unreasonable to point out.
There does not seem to be any real difficulty increase in time, ad least in my limited play time.
Feedback on inhabited planets, such as a ding or a more visible graphic would be nice

This is the first game in this jam with this control scheme that is implemented well. I liked the graphics and the music also. The gameplay was done well enough but not really exciting. I liked the black hole physics though!
