Crate Typist by Luca1152

made by Luca1152 for LD 42 (JAM)

Crate Typist (pronounced Great Typist) is a simple, yet difficult typing game with tower defense elements where you have to protect the red zones from the crates by destroying them with the power of your keyboard.

ldjam.png

How to play

  • The goal of the game is to keep the crates from going into the red zones.
  • You destroy the crates by typing the word written on them.

Tips for a higher score

  • The longer the streak of correct key presses, the greater the score bonus.
  • The closer the crate is to the center, the greater the score multiplier.
  • The different types of crates suggest the length of their word.

The theme

If you aren't fast enough to destroy the crates, they will get closer and closer to the center, and eventually to the red zones, thus Running out of space.

Love it!!! Fun and tests your typing skills at the same time. Your game should be used in typing courses... would make it much more interesting to learn to type.

I enjoy typing challenges, this one got very stressful really quickly, I have no complains about the game besides the error sound that might be too loud on the ears in contrast to the other sounds this game provides. Good job!

This is a pretty simple, enjoyable typing game!

I think my only real complaint is that it's sometimes hard to keep track of which word you started typing. Perhaps you could display it in a box in the centre/at the bottom? This probably isn't even an issue for most people, but when I got interrupted mid-word I sometimes found it hard to continue typing that word.

I wasn't able to play for too long, game keeps crashing if typing goes too fast, nice theme mixing tower defense with typing.

Very cool game! I'm quite slow at typing so I didn't make it very far. This game actually fits quite well with the theme of the last ludum dare as well (compine to genres) which is fun. I'll probably come back to this one when I feel like practicing my typing. Great job!

Lovely entry. The game puts you to test your typing skills. This game could be used for learning fast typing... in a fun and interesting way! It was very fun to play!

Overall, well executed concept and fun little typing game. Needs actually pretty strong typing skills if you want to get great score! Well done!

That was a good take on typing games. I got 628/wave 7. I loved the typing error sound, and the fact that your bullets were the letters you were typing. Near the end, I was starting to have a bit of trouble actually reading the words, as they were moving pretty quickly.

Now I found out I suck at typing gmaes. But it was really enjoyable, and challenging to try to get to the 3rd level. Sometimes the words cover each other and you need to find out what might be the start of that really long word which isn't in your first language...
Gg! (Literally)

Well fitted the theme but I would appreciate a slower learning curve! Good job!

@jchaplin Thank you! :)

@tiberiusuciu Thanks! This was also my thought about the sound. I will fix it very soon! :) Also, the game was a bit too easy before, like I could easily get to the 10th wave, and I felt it was pretty boring, so I changed some numbers and now it may be too hard. I will tweak with the numbers yet again :). Thanks for the feedback!

@mdacoffee Thanks! I will make the color of text of the current word a bit more contrasted to the other ones. This should do the trick :).

@nam-nguyen Thanks. I will fix this bug as soon as possible. I had this problem before, and I thought I solved it. Thank you again for telling me about it :).

@gurbx Thank you :D. I am pretty good at typing and I wanted it to be pretty challenging for me, but I guess I made it a bit too hard. I mean I hardly surpass wave 5.

@fingamer Thanks!

@paulstraw I myself didn't get to wave 7, but I can see how it can get too fast. I will tweak the formula for speed a bit. And thank you!

@balka Thanks! I too found out I am not that good at typing games :)). But I wanted the game to be challenging, so I think I got it right? :)).

Pretty neat and fun typing game! I didn't see much the relation with the theme though :(
I thought the crates started to fast and man, they never stopped! Got up to wave 7 with 387 points. I loved the typing sound each key made, but I think the "wrong" key sound was kinda out of place? (Was it the Windows sound?)

Overall pretty fun, and really hard! Good Job!

@ryanjavanshir Thanks! :). I, too, thought about adding the WPM but I just didn't have enough time to do it. I mean I coded most of the gameplay in the last 2-3 hours of the jam. If I will ever create a sequel to this game I will make sure to add WPM. :)

You made typing stressful, difficult and engaging. Yes Please! It was a solid package, but it does leave me desiring more, which is a good thing. The maze and streak mechanics are good and compliment the typing mechanics, but I would love to see what else you could add in to really elevate it above other typing test games.

@ijzm Thank you! More people told me that they don't really understand how it is related to the theme, so I tried my best to explain it in "The theme" section from this page. I wanted the game to be hard, so I guess I succeeded? :) I actually made the game easier, but it seemed boring (especially considering that I am a pretty good typist), so I changed it back. And yes, it was the Windows sound :)). I didn't really get much time to think about what sounds to choose, and it was the first thing that came to mind :). Thank you again!

Pretty nice. You should definitely revise the difficulty, though.

Random anecdote time: I made a platformer for a class project once, and literally everybody said it was too fast. I added an option to halve the player speed, and people *still* said it was too fast, but at least it was playable. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, when you're making a game, it's important to remember that people who play it might not have the same skill level as you, so you should try to accommodate that.

Or maybe I'm just annoyed that I can only score 50 points. Interpret my comments as you will

Great game it was fun to play and it can also help me improve my typing skills. I think the progression of difficulty was spot on. I also though it was interesting on how you looked at the theme and the way you approached it. 5/5 for innovation. I think that you should try to get this game on a site like typing.com. I know my keyboarding teacher will probably fall in love with this game.

@mao Thanks! About the difficulty, I made it that hard considering that there are many techy guys around here, so the chance of them being fast typist is pretty high. Now, you should know that this game is hard even for me, because it doesn't take much to get to a hard wave, and I personally like it this way. It is a hard game for everyone :).

@skippynose2 Thank you! I, too, considered putting it on another sites, so I may do it in the near future, after I add more features to it :). Thank you again!

Different idea have to say. Game has minimalistic approach which is good and the graphics are consistent. Things that can be improved -
Better menu.
Game score is not shown at end.
the game is forgiving that means if you make a mistake in the spelling it lets you retype and rectify the mistake , so in the game you are not fighting accuracy only time.
All in all good gameplay.

I'm no typist, got to 616/Wave 8. Think it was cool, but it feels just like any other ordinary typing game, tbh. Maybe if the crates actually stacked when it got to the center, it'll fit the theme even better. Overall tho, it was a good game, and I enjoyed it!

@kelda Thanks! You can read "The theme" section form this page to understand how it is related to the theme. But I have to agree that it is not very obvious. Also, there is a bar at the bottom that represents a score multiplier. If you have a streak of correct words written, the score multiplier will be higher. That's one way I made accuracy important :)

@vivek-sharma20 Thank you! Yes, I agree that the menu could have been better. It was actually in the plan, as was highscore, but I sadly did not have the time to implement all of this :). Thank you again!

@undefinist Thanks :). I'd say that if you got to wave 8 you are a a very good typist. I myself struggle to get there :).

Fun idea, I enjoyed playing it. As some others have said sometimes - especially when it begins to get faster and faster - it gets hard to track which word you started typing. I got a score of 1020 and into wave 13, but I made an error when typing a word, tried to type some of the other - many words - and couldn't. My own fault, but at the speed everything was going I had no idea what I had to type.

Despite that one issue I had with it I thought the game was a really neat idea, a lot of fun to play and really satisfying when you clear a wave. Some of the sounds were good, some a little iffy (the error sound) but they got the message across.

Overall really nice work!

I liked it! But really, I sucked at it. 99 was my best score... So yeah, great to know I now have a game to work on my lousy typing skills. :p
But maybe it's also because I don't handle time pressure so well.. Felt like I couldn't even type the shortest words correctly --'
But it's a great idea and ofc the old windows sounds were spot on. Not a big fan of the background music tho.. but that's just a detail.
Great job!

### Good
- The game manages to capture the typical tower defense **panic** when enmies get closer
- Although I found the **music** to be a bit repetitive it's chill and fitting

### Could be improved
- The **music** is a bit repetitive.
- It's super frustrating if you start **typing on the wrong grate** by accident. The system should be able to recognize if the key you are pressing is matching on the clostest grade in the other lane.
- A **linear layout of the lanes** would make it a lot easier to see on which grades you should focus.
- A **slower speed progression** would have been nicer
- **Stronger color differences** between the grate types

A lot of critique is subjective and would maybe be best resolved with a difficulty setting.

The best I could manage was wave 4 / 190 pts. The number of good vs "bad" bullet points isn't a rating just what came to my mind, I liked the game a lot and it was fun. I tried multiple times, good job on the entry! ;)

@anudin Thank you a lot for your very descriptive feedback! :) One thing that I did not really understand is your problem with typing on the wrong crate (not grate, by the way :) ). This shouldn't really happen because on screen there are no two words that start with the same letter at any time, so this shouldn't really be a problem. If that's not what you meant, I'd like if you could explain it to me again. Thanks! :D

16. Aug 2018 · 12:08 UTC
@luca1152 Basically I would need a system to change the **crate** [ ;) ] I'm currently typing to without finishing it. Maybe I didn't notice how close a crate on the other lane was to the exit and started to type a long word. One system that would allow that behaviour would be to limit typing to the two crates that are closest to the exit (one per lane) and if the user types a char that doesn't match the current active but the other closest crate change focus. I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.

@anudin Oh, one thing I could add in the future is to remove the selected word when you press backspace. This should do it, right? :)
Anudin
16. Aug 2018 · 12:47 UTC
@luca1152 I think that's an even better idea! Yeah. Another thing that just came to my mind is that maybe you could let the closest crates glow a little - just to give you eyes something to focus on and to see quickly where problems could arise.

i really love typing games! good fun haha, i got 320. i reckon what would be cool is being able to build towers to help defend, and maybe theyd run out of ammo and youd type to refill them? just to help when it gets super hectic. good sounds tho made the typing feel really satisfying

A good test for the mechanical keyboard. It was a little difficult at first trying to keep track of two different pathways for typing. An interesting twist that could have been added is reducing the actual length between the packages and the red box if you let a crate pass by, which could further support the theme of the jam. Overall the game was well executed. Props

Nice mix between a Tower Defence and a Typing game, I can kinda see the theme in it yep.

The art is simple but good enough. The music is pleasant to listen to. The sounds fit well and are correct.

I didn't encounter any bug and everything went smoothly.

Typing efficiently with my right hand being a bit difficult at the moment, my highscore was more of a "lowscore" :p but it was fun to play.

Good job! :)

LOL I liked a lot your game. It reminds me my ldjam41 game, that was a typing game, if you are interested in playing it (https://gamejolt.com/games/ChromaticGorilkaTypo/335315).

I agree with Anudin, in some typing like games you are allowed to type any word you want on the screen. It verifies the letter you type and then find a word that matches it.

Other than that I had an amazing time.

Good job!

A very nice typing game! And a really hard one! Only got to wave 3 with 99 score. Didn't really feel like it was fitting the theme, you aren't really running out of space, you are running out of time.

I'm not sure if giving more score for the crates closer to the center was a right idea though. I can see what you were going for, making it a risk vs reward mechanic but it felt more like the game was punishing you for playing good and rewarding for playing badly.

Really liked it! Good idea! My suggestion: Mostly for readability, it would be better for the ramp in difficulty to be tied to the words' length instead of the crates speed. So longer words but the same overall speed.
