Le Parking by karlipoppins

[raw]
made by karlipoppins for LD 42 (COMPO)

Welcome to ze most prestigious "Le Parking" in Paris!

You my friend, are ze temporary valet for zis week-end!

Instructions: - Park the cars as requested - Note the time of pickup to park strategically. - Deliver the cars back to customers.

Controls: - Arrow keys to move - Space to enter / exit a vehicle

Play the game online (web)

Tools Used - Code: PhaserJS - Music: GarageBand - Sounds: sfxr + phone recordings - Graphics: Aseprite

Dev Notes - Still a couple of bugs. Hopefully you won't run into them... - This was my first time using the Phaser library. I realized half way through that while it handles sprite rotation, it doesn't handle sprite collider rotations, which makes it hard for any rectangular sprite (cars...) to handle collision properly when rotated. I had to hack this and it's still pretty flaky...

Nice little game here. I like the idea and its execution. Not sure if you are french or not.

nice little game - charming and funny, gameplay mechanics are solid and a good bit of fun, love the cutscenes as well, great job!

I enjoyed this, even if controlling the character was (I believe intentionally) a struggle.

Very cool! This feels quite polished for a compo game. Lots of unique art and I'm really impressed with the main song you made. When the horns kicked in I was like "woah". Overall I like it. I like the quirkiness of trying to rapidly park the cars while crashing into stuff. I was very amused when I boxed myself into a corner with a car.

Unfortunately on my second playthough I literally only had one car show up over the course of a few minutes, it seemed like a bug. I'll probably revist this one later if you fix the issue because I actually think it can be a lot of fun to play!

Graphics and audio are really good in this one! The cars handle pretty well, though I had some trouble getting in and out of the cars. I think it might help if the entrance to the parking garage were a little bigger, it can sometimes be hard to get in and out (I suppose that's kind of the point)

Awesome concept. I find the walking controls hard to use and I think it would be fun if you could exit a car while its moving and have it keep momentum. Graphics are excellent!

The artwork and sound is top notch. Just difficult enough to keep me in panic mode all the time. Overall great game. The only issue I had was the character freezes when I try to restart the game.

That was a pretty cute game! At first the controls were a bit weird but as I got more used to it it started to give the game a more unique challenge. Trying to position the cars ahead of time as to not block yourself later down the line was a neat idea.

I found myself running out of time more often than I was struggling with parking space though, so it felt like a bit of a deviation from the theme in that way although I do see what you were going for. Not sure if I was just unlucky but if you restart the game after losing the cars sometimes take forever to show up and another time I couldn't move my character anymore.

Good job! :smile:

Takes me back to Intellivision days - your weekend title could have been an actual release.

I'm amazed at what some people can accomplish. Great work.

very nice idea for a game. Parking is difficult activity and it's time we get a good game out of that. Apparently you need to move the car while trying to rotate it, so they behave just like ordinary cars. Good controls too.

@tontonpizza: I am :)

@ian-kettlewell thanks for reporting the bug! I last-minute modified my code and broke the scene reset... duh!

@negativegeforce: fixed!

@ossi: fixed the restart bug...

Really enjoyed the game, and loved the art style. Seemed a little difficult, but that may just be sleep deprivation talking at this point :smiley:. Overall, great job.

Man, this is hard! Think I spend with this game more time than with every other, just because of that feel "oh god damn it I can do better then this" Love the pixel art style

Looks great! And the gameplay is nice, too (maybe should be little faster, in my opinion).

Apparently you need to drive backwards before you can leave the car. That was frustrating to figure out. The game itself is really cool, and the driving feels fun.

Oh man, this is great. Really good job. Big fan of the music. I did accidentally get out of the car once and ended up on the north side of the fence.

The control doesn't feel good.. And is it a bug that sometimes the customers requested a to pick up their cars earlier than the current time?

@leave yeah the car needs to be stopped to be able to get out, but it's not very polished.

@vekstr yeah that's the main bug in the game. If you're too slow customers who have lined up ask you to park their cars after the current time. Didn't see it before I published it. Controls definitely need some tuning. I was aiming at some GTA 1 style but ran out of time to polish that part. Thanks for playing it though!

Neat game! Controls definitely make it quite challenging to be expedient. Trying to get in and out of the cars can be a bit challenging as well. I enjoyed the music, and the simple graphics certainly work with this type of game.

Ha! my mortal parking enemy! Love the humor and stylings. Great song too! I like the difference in mechanics compare to my parking game. This one is more realistic and thoughtful. Though I found I struggled too much on the character controls vs the car controls.

Great idea for the theme. Parking lot always running out of space. The control feels good and challenging. Nice game!

Hi Nicolas!
Very nice entry! I liked the stress having to several people waiting... The graphics are very cool.
IMHO, some little things to improve:
- The moving of the character and the car are the same. But generally, the character is controlled just with simple top/bottom/left/right, not like a character has a steering wheel.
- Better collision between the cars!

Great entry! I liked the idea very much and the implementation was surprisingly much smoother than I expected. I usually am not good at car games but this game made it easy for me :) I think the music was really good and fitting to the mood. As a way of improvement, if you decided to expand a bit in this project, I recommend adding some motivation to keep going like something to do with the money you get. Congratulations :)

Very fun game. First played, I parked carefully along to the white line, but it became more and more careless. When I played it several times, I found that the improvement point, and it seemed quite deep. It's a busy game, but the music was good and feel gentle. My final score was 236. The last one got angry at the guests and the score did not enter... Great work overall!

haha I am bad at these style games but I really liked it. Music was great and art was fantastic. If I were to add one thing, a few sound effects of the guests getting angry would have been cool. Overall great job

Have fun out there

I really struggle with games that use forward/backward and rotate instead of the absolute directions. I'm not sure if I should blame the navigation or my inexperience with parking real cars, but I will deflect deflect deflect blame for sucking at this game. Good on you for presenting a complete compo game. Itt works, just not when I do it.

Neat concept. The walking felt a little weird like the guy is drunk and it was a little hard to get in and out of the cars. The retro style and music were well done. I couldn't figure out why one guy got angry faced when I put the car with arrow over it in the delivery area, and it didn't seem to matter where I parked it, he wouldn't leave with his car.

Not a bad game, however the controls were very hard to get used to. Love the soundtrack you created, and the mood you set with that soundtrack was great, but again. The controls where a bit wonky. Great game though!
