Ripper by Cole Wolff

[raw]
made by Cole Wolff for LD 40 (JAM)

My first LudumDare ever and honestly did not quite go as expected. Thought it was going to come together a little bit quicker but have only been programming for the last 3 months or so. I am just glad I got something pieced together and barely in time. It has multiple bugs that I had to do some cheesy workarounds so that I would feel even mildly comfortable submitting it. Had to borrow a few assets from other things I had lying around to put a small bit of finish on the project as well. Corgi2D mostly.

The More You Have, The Worse It Is-Notoriety You play as Jack The Ripper and the more people you kill the more heat you get on your tail. More cops show up and have more obstacles to take care of because of this.

Nice game if we keep in mind that you've only been programming for 3 months and this is your first jam.

This LD is my first too, but I've been programming a little bit more time than you.

If you need help or advice, send me an MD on Twitter :D

Good job!

Thanks! A good friend of mine recommended doing the LD just to get a feel rapid game creation and for the sake of putting prototypes together. Worth the time and I learned a decent amount. I'll be sure to hit you up if I need any help. Thanks again!

Had a friend of my say that happens if you don't let the start game button animation come to a stop
Didn't get to test that. Had class 20 minutes after I submitted the game lol

Audio (sounds and music) were the best I've seen so far. Also loved the character art. The biggest negative for me were the controls, I found it hard to move around and seemed to get stuck in places. Also really loved the achievement system. Great work!

Thank you! Unfortunately, I will have to say I did not do the music myself. I forgot to credit that when I was building the credits because I honestly just forgot. Yeah I need to redo some of the controls and fix up some other simple things so it plays better. I am just burnt for the time being haha.

I really like the concept of playing as Jack the Ripper :) ! Nice little game, though the controls are a little slow... Cheers and keep it up, the concept as loads of potential !

Thank you! Yeah I did not get to implement enough gameplay mechanics to build around it. Idea was the more Notoriety you get as a killer, which is the bar that fills up when you kill people, more bad things happen to you. Like more enemies spawning, harder enemies, and such.

Thanks Makerart! Yeah the ladder thing is a little annoying, I did not come up with a better quick solution so just opted to have to exit the ladder while holding left or right lol

I seem to be in the minority here but the game won't run on my desktop (chrome Version 62.0.3202.94 (Official Build) (64-bit), windows 10). I get the following error: "An exception has occurred, but exception handling has been disabled in this build. If you are the developer of this content, enable exceptions in your project WebGL player settings to be able to catch the exception or see the stack trace."

Regardless though. It's awesome to hear you're making games just 3 months into learning to program. It's a great way to learn in my opinion :)

Thanks! I did have a friend help me out with some scripting issues I had. He has been a Unity developer for about 6 years and actually the guy that got me into development. Unfortunately he had work all weekend so only got to assist this time around. Hopefully next Ludum Dare I can have a small crew working around the clock and get some more complete work pushed out.

Great job, I love the forward moonwalking look of the ripper's swagger. I'm happy to say i was killed by my first victim! lol

The results are quite not there yet, but creating games, especially with only 3 days of works, takes time and experience.

Keep it up! :)

I would say this is a good first go at programming games and a Jam. I had a hard time getting off the ladders when I got to the top. But like I said not a bad first go.
