Defragmentare: Bring Order to Chaos by monkeydom

[raw]
made by monkeydom for LD 42 (COMPO)

Help. Your files are fragmented and all over the place and your disk space is in the process of running out. Bring order to the file chaos, get points for better order, survive as long as you can.

(Sadly I did not manage to put audio in)

Goal

  • Sort the segments ascending as tightly aligned to the top left as possible.
  • To clear a stage the minimum you have to do is move all segments out of the corruption zone in the bottom before corruption is completed.
  • Once you put each file in order in the safe zone, a stage is done too.

Interface

  • Drag a segment to move it. Alternatively click once to select and click again to place.
  • Segments need the full width of their space free to move. E.g. if you want to move a piece one space to the left that is wider than one you need to move it somewhere else first.

Todos for a post jam version:

  • Sound.
  • Indicate the piece in hand transparently if it cannot be placed currently, to clear up the confusion about movement.
  • Scoring animation to self explain the goals.
  • A short pause after a stage ends to be able to look at what you have done.

A tutorial part in the start would have been very nice, i got stuck before figuring it out.

I find the gameplay quite innovative. I had never tested a game like this before :)

Beautiful and claustrophobic, with a simple yet neat mechanic. Love it.

nice idea, but I think it needa tutorial. Wasn't sure what I was trying to do exactly

Quite nice :)

Took a few tries to figure out that I have to place the files in the complete upper left corner, not starting with the not-yet-turned-blocks.
Other than that, well done.

I wasn't sure if I was doing well or not, I just lined and stacked the blocks up in order.

It is a really cool idea that you executed amazingly. The graphics were quite nice, and the difficulty curve was very balanced. My one complaint is that I couldn't find what button to press to quit the game, so a list of what keys did what would be nice.

Ah the good old Windows 98 defragmenter. I am mixed between fun, because of having to move things around quickly, and frustrating because of the mouse interaction. Maybe it would help to always show where you want to place the part and highlighting it in red or something when you can't place it here. It took me a little time to figure out how to play. Nice graphics.

nice and simple game... the concept of running out of space is well implemented here.i was facing little difficulty while moving the same block in the same row but that is manageable.

@nexusviper @sentmoraap - good feedback, thank you!. The difficulity of placement is intentional, e.g. you need to have space for the full segment and are not allowed to overlap with anything on the board including yourself. Will add a better visual in a post jam version to address this to make it more obvious.

@monkeydom you could play my game as well in your free time :P

While there is positively some fun in the idea of defragmentation and there is a game hidden in it somewhere, this didn't capture it for me. Sorry.

So this is what my computer looks like on the inside! Definitely could've used a tutorial at the beginning. After I understood what I was doing, I got into the gameplay more. Would have enjoyed a level counter (or was the game just endless)? The white font was also hard to read on the yellow blocks, maybe that's something that could be easily fixed.

I also had weird issues when I was just trying to move a block one space to the left, and I couldn't do it unless I moved the block somewhere else altogether and then tried again. Maybe that was my mouse acting up? I'm not sure. Anyway, well done on making such a polished, complete game in such a short time!

I don't really understand what I'm supposed to be doing so maybe a bit more explanation would help. Also, the movement isn't very smooth or responsive, maybe make the block you are currently dragging glow or change opacity or something to let you know which one you're moving. The graphics are nice though!

Made me wish I had taken the defragmentation algorithms class back in college! Well executed over all, although there's something tactile-y 'off' about the moving of rectangles around. I understood the wrapping, but click-selecting-dragging wasn't always very snappy, which added some frustration. It felt challenging without being unfair, though, so I had a fun 10 minutes :)

I couldn't figure this one out. I think it's a pointless exercise to try and figure out every combination until you find out what you're supposed to do. Could you please provide instructions?

@loveapplegames @paden-shorey: I added some text instructions and post-jam todos that including improving that they hopefully would not be needed anymore after.

A bit hard to handle, but quite fun !

After 3 try, I don't manage to make the 5th stage ...

I like the concept, however I was still a bit lost with regards to how to get a complete screen, I thought I had put them together and it didn't seem to complete. Otherwise, the game looks real nice, just needs a bit more of a guide.

I manged to understand that I had to order the numbers in order low to high in same color. A bit interesting in the beginning but when the only change each level is more files it became tedious. It would be interesting if you introduced some small gameplay changes/twists on new levels.

Challeging game. Nice graphics and the idea about the theme. This one will be working awesome on touchscreens. Well done

What a clever idea! I used to defrag my HDD often back in the day and seeing a reference to good old Norton brought a smirk to my face :) I would have liked to have played this game in ANSI-graphics for true retro feel, haha! I like the idea of sorting the blocks and it had a pleasing feeling as you got things in order. Fun and great idea - high innovation score from me!
