Super Gun Baby Run - An RPG Endless Run and Gun by KunoNoOni

LD41 Submission. Theme: Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Controls

Left Ctrl/Left Mouse Button/Joystick Button 0 - shoot (hold for auto fire)

Left Alt/Right Mouse Button/Joystick Button 1 - Jump

I found it easiest to fire with the keyboard and jump with the mouse.

Hints

  • Running through the rocks or into the aliens will hurt you.

  • Every 2000 Experience points you gain will raise your level by 1 and it fully heals you. There is a sound associated with leveling up.

  • As you level up so do the aliens and the damage the rocks do

  • When you level you gain 1 stat point for each of the 3 stats, agility, accuracy and endurance, 5 hp and 1 damage. As your stats increase you will gain bonus health, damage, and the ability to double jump.

  • The ground alien is worth 100xp and the flying spaceship is worth 200xp. This is in addition to the experience counter at the top of the screen.

  • The power ups each last 10 seconds, each additional one you get will add 10 more seconds to the countdown timer. So for example if you get the rate of fire power up and have 4.73 seconds left and then get another rate of fire power up you will now be at 14.73 seconds left. Once a power up timer hits zero getting another one of the same will start the timer back at 10 secs.

  • It is possible to have all 3 power ups at one time.

  • When you get a power up your bullets will change color. If you get a different power up while still under the effects of another one your bullets will remain the color of the first power up until it's time runs out then if you still have time on the new power up your bullets will change to the new color.

  • White is your normal bullet color, green is for Rate of Fire power up, Red for Double Damage and Yellow for HE Bullets.

  • Only the ground alien will drop power ups and items

  • there are only 2 items, a small and large potion. Small potion heals 25% and the Large potion heals 50% of your health.

  • There is no way to win... its an endless runner, the fun is seeing how high you can level. In my testing I've gotten into the low 20's

The game is short and simple, but I liked it ! It was fun to play and discover new power ups and ennemies. I like the pixel art, simple but effective.
Nothing more to say than good job !

It's fun to play, maybe have some problems. The first one is a bit easy to correct, in the "Instructions" menu, the text is difficult to read cause the background and the colors don't help together. The game itself is fine, but the aliens in the air can't really kill you if you doesn't jump... Ok, you don't get the exp, but you don't die, and just can kill the ground aliens shooting non stop. Some games fix this with the ability to move you right and left in the map, (As you would do in a airplane shooting game)and having something that comes from the sky to kill you directly.

Beating up members of a potentially sentient alien race... What could possibly go wrong? Loved the animations.

Pretty fun game! I liked the power up voice lines like in metal slug. It got a bit repetitive after a while, maybe you can make it harder

Great job on this. I played it until level 22 or so and stopped at that point. Here are a few suggestions for next time

1. You have very simple controls - I love that - jump and shoot, however, you don't truly control your shooting because you can't double tap the left click to shoot twice in a row. This is a problem because it makes it super hard to shoot the flying guys. I basically just held down left mouse the whole time because there was no real point to timing your shots

2. Difficulty - nothing seems to get any harder, I never was in danger of running out of health and I stopped avoiding the green stuff altogether, with just a tiny bit more work and a palette swap you could change your enemies from pink to green to blue to red to orange etc. and each one would be more difficult

But I had a fun time either way so job well done!

Reached Level 47, quite a long play for such a simple game.
Gaining abilities seems to change nothing, it's like "make 4 mistakes in a row and you are dead" no matter what level you have - but overall it's a nice small game that makes fun when played :)

Solid little game, really enjoyed the graphics and the little audio loop, everything fit together well! Really liked the enemy death animations. Would have liked to see another level in the background with a parallax effect as you run. Slightly more obvious leveling up (flashing character/"LEVEL UP" voiced). Really enjoyed the voice effects, lets you know what's happening concisely. Running could have increased slightly faster maybe? I second the palette swapping (both for characters and enemies as variants). Sweet ass entry.

I think you've really nailed the controls / basic gameplay, though there could be something more to do apart from just jumping and shooting. Maybe by adding in the time honoured RPG tradition of looting your enemies and selling their stuff?

A bit more variety in the enemies wouldn't hurt either, not necessarily the looks even, just something as simple as occasionally sending two enemies at the same time would help.

This is really fun! I don't feel like it's all that much of an RPG though.

Great job with the game. I really dig the pixel art. I will have to repeat a few pieces of feedback here. You definitely have a difficulty curve with enemies taking more hits, but it is so slow that it takes a while to notice. I would suggest tweaking your mechanics to increase the difficulty faster. Maybe increase the player's move speed? All in all, you did a great job.

Fun and simple, I liked it! But the genre mix wasn't so innovative though. Good job in this!

Very nice little game. I loved the announcer sound effects when you picked up upgrades! I would of loved to see some more enemy types or skills in the game but overall great job!

I will be honest with you: I don't get the punchline, if there is any to begin with.

You can slap "RPG" onto anything and that won't make much of a diference, if it even does make any. The only thing you will be doing is presenting the player with the stat sheet on a game where otherwise the number crunch would stay under the hood. This is an infinite runner with some semblance of a dificulty scalling.

With that said, interesting game, didn't like the pixelart, the sound design is alright and there is a genuine effort on trying to make the premise as fun as possible, even if I didn't find it all that fun.

Congratulations on finishing your Compo. Better luck on your next project.

I really liked the pixel art. I think you did a nice job with them and the explosion particles when you blow up a rock are really satisfying. Unfortunately, as most endless runners do, it got repetitive and after a while there didn't seem to be any additional challenges. I think maybe if the speed of the game increased slightly over time it may have added to the difficulty and challenge. Overall though, it was well executed. Nice work!

I don't really see the new take on genres here, but it was a decent endlessrunner implementation none the less.

I agree with jharlers idea to increase the speed overtime or somesuch to make it harder to keep up. Enemies do seem to deal more damage later I think, but it's hard to say for sure.

Solid game, I don't see the genre here but, I liked it!
