Like @pinkemma, I think some more visual (or audio?) feedback would have been great, for harvestable crops and maybe also a detection gauge or indicator of some kind.
What did you enjoy the most about making this?
The game is really hard though, you tend to have too much wolfs around you when you reach 10~ crops harvested, and as you can't create hide tiles, you just end up with 3-4 wolfs one tile way from your crops and you're ******.
@pinkemma @yanek: Yes, more visual feedback (harvestable crops, successful watering) would definitely improve the game.
@ateriamia @hyorvenn: I chose to increase the number of wolves rapidly to keep the duration of a game limited and prevent the game from becoming boring. It does conflict with the casual farming part though. A crafting/constructing element to hide and a difficulty setting could improve this.
@temmy: This was awesome. I like how the compo forced me to make everything (code, graphics, sounds) myself and I am proud I finished a game. There is room for improvement, but I learned a lot and I actually published something I created.
My top score was 8.
I'll give another go on a different computer!
The game is nice though, felt real tension sitting the bush, waiting for the big bad wolves to go away. Didn't manage to farm many crops though, those wolves are too hungry. Very good for your first game! Props for using Godot too.
Also, the graphics were super cute, which I'm a real sucker for ^_^
Good job!
Really interesting game with some nice audio while fitting the theme too, nice one!
@aarre-entertainment @pheonise @handle: This is the most heard critique. The game does need more visual feedback (watered crops, full grown crops, hiding indicator, etc.). For me it was completely logical and I didn't think enough from a new player's perspective. I will definitely add it in my next entry. I am also not very happy with the movement of the wolves. I rewrote their code several times, but I still have to figure out how to get it just right.
@jf1989: Thanks. I've never made graphics before and with this game I learned I can do basic graphics. I improved a lot since my first drafts and hope to do even better next time. Glad you liked it.
@zanhava: Good advice. You probably didn't know you can hide in the full grown crops too? That way, you can create your own hiding places.
@inventorofstuff: You're right, the background music is too quiet. Some people even thought there was no music at all. That's a pity because this was my first attempt at making music. Next time, I will give audio in general some more attention during the polishing phase.
**Good**
The game as itself is enjoyable. It's challenging, but not impossible. A good blend.
Music is good, and you have good action sound effects to know when you've done something
I like that you didn't have an infinite world, keep it simple helped with execution and workload
**Improvements**
It's hard to tell sometimes what land I will till. I figured it out, but maybe have the plot of land highlighted would be more helpful.
The plot of land should darken when you add water. #Minecraft style
Should be more of a warning when the wolves attack. Once they have you insight, you're dead :(
Thanks for making this game, see you in the next jam!
Great idea for a genre mashup, and well executed. Some improvements I would suggest: Zoom in a little bit. It would add to the tension of not knowing when the wolves would appear. Also, make the action buttons at the bottom clickable. More than once I used my mouse to click the buttons. Since you click to use them, it would make sense to click to select them.
It would be nice, to somehow be able to kill the wolves, otherwise you are having a hide -> wait -> wait -> score some points -> hide -> wait kind of situation. If killing a wolf would be possible with a high risk, but also with a huge reward then it would add a lot to the pacing of the game. It then would be hide -> wait -> sneak on to a wolf -> wait for the right moment -> kill him -> hide -> score some points -> hide and so forth which would essentially be low pressure -> high pressure -> medium -> low.
